Why we are best for business World-class premises Choose from some of the most modern, flexible and affordable business and industrial space on the market, including Cobalt; the UK s largest office park, and Quorum Business Park; which offers one of the most attractive location packages in the UK. Cost-effective North Tyneside is one of the most cost-effective regions in the UK, with very competitive wages and lower than average operating costs, ensuring value for money and a high return on investment. 7 Some of our most popular sites include: Cobalt Business Park Cobalt is the largest and most successful office park in the UK, offering over two million square feet of office space, built or under construction. 8 best for business Because we are... Cost effective We first came to North Tyneside with a communications centre operation. It has been so successful that we again chose North Tyneside for a major office requirement. Stephen Lee, EE Competitive wages and lower operating costs make North Tyneside one of the most financially rewarding places to locate in the UK. You can easily secure high quality office or industrial space and pay up to 50% less than in London and the South East, or 20% less than in Leeds or Manchester. Average wages are around 12% below the national average and operating costs are also generally lower; with suppliers and services being typically less than other parts of the country. Less congestion also makes it easier to deal with suppliers and customers. Such lower costs also make it affordable for businesses to expand, employing more staff and creating additional jobs. Plus, if your business locates within one of the two Enterprise Zone sites in North Tyneside, it will reduce your costs even further.
High quality office and industrial space is up to 50% less than in London and the South East and 20% less than Leeds or Manchester, with average wages around 12% below the national average.

Because we are... Well-connected North Tyneside enjoys excellent road, rail, sea and air links to the rest of the UK, Europe and beyond. These services are expanding all the time as the area develops as an economic hub. Newcastle International Airport voted Best UK Airport by the Airport Operators Association (AOA)for the last four years is just a short drive from the borough, and provides regular access to key airport hubs including: 15 flights a day to London s Heathrow, Gatwick and Stanstead, with an approximate fligh t time of one hour 6 flights per day to Amsterdam Schipol A daily Emirates 777 service to Dubai, which provides access to a global network of routes and destinations Direct flights to a range of major European cities, including Paris, Rome, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Geneva and Dusseldorf, as well as a range of UK cities. Rapid regional and national road links are offered via the A1 and A19. The opening of a second Tyne Tunnel has transformed North East traffic flow, eliminating queues and unlocking even more potential for business. High quality public transport includes the quick and convenient Tyne and Wear Metro system, which is currently undergoing a 400m programme of investment. The Metro directly links North Tyneside to Newcastle International Airport and Newcastle Central Station. From Newcastle Central Station, the cities of London, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh can all be reached in less than three hours, with trains to London running every half hour. The Port of Tyne offers roll-on, roll-off facilities, deep-water river berths and customs-approved warehousing and storage, including a one-stop logistics service. It also has an international passenger ferry terminal offering cruises to European destinations, with new routes being connected all the time.
best for business Because we are... Home to two enterprise zone sites North Tyneside is home to two new Enterprise Zone sites; the former Swan Hunter shipyard and the Port of Tyne North Estate, which is the largest single Enterprise Zone site at 30 hectares. The two sites are part of the overall North East Low Carbon and Advanced Manufacturing Enterprise Zone. The River Tyne North Bank area has been identified by the government as one of six Centres for Offshore Renewable Engineering (CORE) across the UK.
North Tyneside is primed and ready for growth. The North Bank of the Tyne offers a wealth of opportunity for subsea and offshore industries with deep port locations and easy access to the North Sea. James Ramsbotham, Chief Executive, North East Chamber of Commerce Enterprise Zone sites can offer investors: Business rate discounts or enhanced capital allowances A simplified planning regime making development and growth quicker and easier Government support to ensure that superfast broadband is rolled out throughout the Enterprise Zone. The former Swan Hunter site occupies a key riverside location close to Wallsend town centre and forms part of a much larger strategic, deep water, riverside employment area. This site is ideal for smaller companies either in the offshore wind turbine supply chain or in the subsea sector. Firms locating here can benefit from business rate relief for five years. North Tyneside Council has invested 13.6m, including 6.8m ERDF funding, in extensive infrastructure improvements to the site. The works include additional utility provision, access improvements, quay edge improvements and dredging. The Port of Tyne North Estate Enterprise Zone site, which is only 96 nautical miles from Dogger Bank, is targeted at a large inward investor in the offshore wind turbine industry. This site benefits from enhanced capital allowances, with 30 hectares of a larger 50 hectare site designated as an Enterprise Zone. It is estimated this Enterprise Zone will bring around 7,000 new direct jobs to the area, with at least as many new indirect jobs in the local supply chain. A Centre for Offshore Renewable Engineering (CORE) The River Tyne North Bank area has also been identified by the government as one of six Centres for Offshore Renewable Engineering (COREs) across the UK. COREs are partnerships between Central and Local Government and Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) that ensure businesses looking to invest in manufacturing for the renewables sector get the most comprehensive support possible. Momentum towards a low carbon economy is accelerating, and the North East is one of the best places to build low carbon businesses in order to compete in the global market. It has the right infrastructure for manufacturing, access to a skilled workforce, an experienced local supply chain and committed local leadership. The River Tyne itself offers a world class port and extensive development opportunities. It is also in close proximity to the largest planned wind farm zone positioned directly off the North East coast, and represents a major opportunity for energy companies, developers, turbine manufacturers and installation specialists.
best for business Because of our... Productive people North Tyneside s workforce is one of our most important assets. Our people are loyal, committed, highly skilled, adaptable, friendly, hard-working and productive. The result is staff you will want to keep, who will also want to stay with you, adding real value to your business as it grows. Plus, with almost one million residents located within a 30 minute drive, there is a vast pool of talented individuals to tap into, to drive your business forward. One quarter of the local labour pool is educated to degree level and this figure continues to rise. Once qualified, around two-thirds choose to stay in the area to pursue a career, meaning businesses can recruit from a fresh wave of talented graduates, year after year.
Because of our... Skills and training provision As a business-focused university we re acutely aware of the role highlyskilled, well-qualified people can play in a firm s success. From apprenticeship through to postgraduate researcher, the North East offers the opportunity for career long learning. Andrew Sugden, Head of External Engagement, Northumbria University We know how important it is for businesses to have access to a workforce with the right skills. That is why we have established strong links between our business community, education and training providers, so that the skills needs of local businesses can be matched with training provision. The result is that many of our schools and colleges already offer training tailored to emerging business sectors, and our young people are equipped with the skills and qualifications that local businesses need. For example, a new Energy Academy located next to our enterprise zone site on the River Tyne offers bespoke skills training for the renewables sector. Our unique borough-wide Learning Trust, involving 34 schools, local employers and further and higher education institutes, works to improve education and training for young people. Members of our North Tyneside Business Forum have joined forces with North Tyneside-based Tyne Metropolitan College to ensure that businesses future skills needs can be met. North Tyneside Council also offers support to recruit and train your workforce, including the recruitment of apprentices. All of this means that North Tyneside is ahead of the game when it comes to workforce development, listening to businesses and helping them meet their people and skills needs.
best for business These centres bring together research and development activity and university spin-off companies in locations that encourage knowledge-sharing and collaborative working.
Because of our... Research and innovation Locating to North Tyneside means you have internationally renowned research and development capabilities and facilities on your doorstep. The region s four universities of Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Durham, are at the forefront of research and development across a range of sectors including engineering, energy, applied science, design and medicine - and all enjoy close links with local business and industry. In North Tyneside, plans for new research and development facilities and incubator hubs are in the pipeline for the Enterprise Zone sites on the North Bank of the Tyne, to support new businesses in advanced manufacturing. The National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec) The North East is also home to the National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec). Narec has invested over 150 million of UK Government, private sector and European Regional Development Funding (ERDF) in world-leading research, test and demonstration capabilities which are enabling industry to deliver lower cost and more reliable offshore wind, wave and tidal energy technologies. The Catapult Narec is a partner in the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult which forms part of an elite network of seven technology and innovation centres established and overseen by the Technology Strategy Board. The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult will coordinate, lead and facilitate the rapid development and commercialisation of innovative technologies and technological solutions that also give maximum economic impact in the field of offshore renewable energy.
