Thank you. CYG2011 ATTENDANCE AT DELHI2010 A CYG2011 team will be attending Delhi 2010 between the dates of Thursday 30th September and Monday 11th October and will be based in the Ashok Hotel. This will include Geoff Karran, CYG2011 Chairman and Games Director, Andy Varnom, Chief Sport Co-ordinator, Joyce Hall, Games Administrator and Richard Howarth, representative Regency Travel. During that time we would be happy to meet up with any CGA who wish to discuss CYG2011. 3 The Three Legs of Man For centuries, the Isle of Man s symbol has been its ancient triskelion, three bent legs, each with a spur, joined at the thigh. The Manx triskelion does not appear to have an official design; government publications, currency, flags, the tourist authority and others all use different variants. The Manx triskelion is documented since the thirteenth or fourteenth century at the latest, and is alternatively known in the Manx language as the tre cassyn ("three legs"). The symbol appears on the Isle of Man's ancient Sword of State, which may have belonged to Olaf Godredson, who became King of the Sudreys (Southern Hebrides and the Isle of Man) in The three legs are reflected in the Island's motto (adopted late in the symbol's history): Quocunque Jeceris Stabit, traditionally translated from Latin as 'Whithersoever you throw it, it will stand', or 'Whichever way you throw it, it will stand'. The origin of the 'Three Legs of Man' (as they are usually called) is explained in the Manx legend that Manannan repelled an invasion by transforming into the three legs and rolling down the hill and defeating the invaders.

4 This Month the Isle of Man Celebrated Tynwald Day When the nations arrive for the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man in September 2011, they will become part of an extraordinary and ancient story, the history of the Isle of Mann. The Manx have a long parliamentary history which is, in one particular regard, unique. They boast the longest, continuous Parliament in the world. Parliament in the Island has very deep roots. It stems from the Viking era, the time of those fierce invaders and settlers from the Scandinavian countries who had such an influence on this Island in so many ways. That connection is evident on many occasions but never more so than in the annual open air ceremony in July when the Manx Parliament and its members gather on a small four-tiered hill in the centre of the Island, to hear and read out, the laws passed in the year. This is read both in English and Manx Gaelic. An interesting fact is that if they are not read out, or promulgated, within a certain time, then they do not become law. Why is the ceremony held outside? Well there are a number of theories, one being that the Kings of Mann, recognising he had a number of enemies, felt better able to protect themselves from an assassin s knife out in the open! Taking charge at the ceremony is the Lord of Mann, Queen Elizabeth II but as this is only possible on a few occasions, her place is usually taken by the Island s Lieutenant Governor. The ceremony opens with the arrival of the Lieutenant Governor and his guests. A short church service follows the laying of wreaths at the country s National War Memorial. This is held in the beautiful chapel of St John, which stands on Tynwald Field.. Tynwald gets its name from a Viking phrase meaning assembly field. In procession and dressed in fabulous robes, the President of Tynwald leads the Manx Parliament, along with the Speaker of the House of Keys and members of the Keys and the Upper House, the Legislative Council, in stately procession up a reed covered walkway to Tynwald Hill. The Hill is protected with a canopy, underneath which are ornate seats for the dignitaries. (After the ceremony, locals pick up reeds that have been trodden on and keep them for good luck!) On either side of the walkway stand a guard of honour with trumpeters and standard bearers from many Manx organisations. After reading out the laws in English and then in Manx, the people are invited to present petitions for redress of grievance. This ancient custom gives anyone with a complaint the opportunity to have that complaint taken up by a member of Parliament, the House of Keys. Once those petitions have been collected, the procession then moves from the Hill back to the Chapel of St John, standing at the far end of the walkway. The ceremony has been unchanged (except in detail), for a thousand years.

Focus On... BOXING The venue for the Boxing events will be the Royal Hall in the Villa Marina.

The Royal Hall has permanent seating for 1,000 spectators and additional temporary seating will be installed around the main boxing ring. Two practice rings will also be available within the centre.

This magnificent entertainments centre has been fully refurbished over the last decade and will provide one of the most impressive venues for the Games. The Villa Marina will be the central hub of the Games Village on Douglas Promenade and will also accommodate social areas for the competitors, including a cinema (which will also be the venue for the Chef de Mission meetings) and the adjoining gardens will be the venue for the Closing Ceremony. The promenade directly in front of the Villa Marina will be the start/finish area for the Time Trial and Criterium Cycling events. The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has asked the Amateur Boxing Association of England (ABA) to assist with our preparations and its Chief Executive, Paul King, is a member of our organising team. 6 VISA REQUIREMENT UPDATE The CYG2011 OC continues to meet with personnel from the Isle of Man Passport and Immigration Office who liaise with their UK counterparts to bring you current information. As advised in the last newsletter, the following Commonwealth countries will require Visa documentation for entry into the UK and we would ask that you make application to your British High Commission, as detailed below, as soon as possible, allowing plenty time for paperwork to be progressed. To assist the IoM Passport and Immigration Office in dealing efficiently with Visa applications they have requested that nations make bulk application to the UK as opposed to individual applications. This will immediately identify Visa application specifically for CYG2011 and ensure requests are dealt with promptly. The CYG2011 OC understands that there may be late applications and the passport office has been made aware of this and will work with the OC to approve these as quickly as possible. Its area is 221 square miles (572 square kilometres) WHAT IS THE POPULATION? At the last census in 2006 it was 80,058 WHAT IS THE CLIMATE OF THE ISLAND? It is a temperate climate with warm summers and mild winters. The total rainfall is on average 31 inches per year in Douglas its Capital where the Games will be based. The average high temperature in September is 59F and the average low is 51F WHO GOVERNS THE ISLAND? It is a Crown Dependency owned by the British Crown. Her Majesty the Queen is therefore called the Lord of Mann. However it has its own Parliament with 24 elected members of the House of Keys ( the Lower Chamber) and 9 Members of the Legislative Council ( the Upper Chamber). The two chambers sit together as Tynwald the oldest Parliamentary Government in the world which celebrated its Millennium in HOW DO YOU GET TO THE ISLAND? There are scheduled air flights to the Island daily from London Gatwick, London City, Luton, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Dublin and many other smaller regional airports in the United Kingdom. There are sailings by ferry from Liverpool and Heysham daily. That sea journey takes 2 ½ hours.

8 TARGET OF 10 PARTNER SPONSORS REACHED FOR CYG2011 The CYG2011 Organising Committee recently announced that the target of 10 partner sponsors for the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games has been reached with the addition of Colas, a French owned company who operate throughout the world but are well known on the Isle of Man through their five local companies. They join 188Foundation, Barclays Wealth, Boston Group, Britannia International, Friends Provident International, the Gubay Foundation, Manx Telecom, the Sefton Group and Tower Insurance as the main partner sponsors who will play a vital role in making the 2011 Games a global success.
