2 THE ITINERARY: Riding breaks in and around Thetford Forest gives you ideas for how you can stay for a few days and ride in the Brecks, either by using a local riding school or by bringing your own horse. There s no need to travel around by car either, we ve suggested accommodation that s walking or cycling distance from riding schools; and riding routes that you can reach from your accommodation. Use a local riding school - East Harling Enjoy riding in the Brecks Middle Farm Equestrian Centre is located between the village of East Harling and Harling Forest. The Centre offers riding lessons, hacks through the forest, gymkhana games and pony days, although they don t cater for the under 5 s. There are two campsites nearby. Less than a mile away is the 4 star Dower House Touring Park winners off the David Bellamy Conservation Award. It is set in 20 acres of forest and has excellent facilities including an on-site pub and outdoor pool offering camping and caravan pitches. For a more simple experience the Thorpe Woodland Caravan and Camping Site is about four miles away in Harling Forest. The Angel Inn at Larling is a cycle ride away (around 4 miles) and is also a good place to eat, as well as offering 4 diamond bed & breakfast accommodation and camping in their meadow. When you re not riding you could visit local artist, Mazz Jackson, an internationally renowned tempera painter, but please phone first. (See listings for details). If you don t want to bring the car, Harling Road station, with trains fromthetford, is just a mile to the north of East Harling. From Thetford Bus Station it takes approx. half an hour to East Harling on the PW1 bus. Use a local riding school or bring your horse on holiday The King s Forest and the Icknield Way To the south of the King s Forest, just outside Culford, is the Culford Riding and Livery Stables where experienced riders can book hacks in the forest. There are several places to stay nearby. If you want to bring your own horse you can stay, self-catering, on Rosemary and Stephen Flack s working farm at Culford Farm Cottages, with peaceful walks to the river. The cottages are 4 star and 5 star rated, well-equipped and offer a swimming pool and jacuzzi. If you want to bring your own horse, there are stables and paddocks for grazing. Call the Flack s to find out cost of hay and bedding. Also in Culford, Mrs P Townsend runs a 3 diamond bed and breakfast at 47 Benyon Gardens, a bungalow overlooking farmland. If you prefer to stay in a hotel, the 3 star Swallow Suffolk Golf & Country Club is a modern hotel, situated a little over a mile away near the River Lark at Fornham St. Genevieve. Just across the River Lark at Fornham All Saints, you could stay self-catering in the self-contained wing of a country house at Fornham Hall Cottage, or bed and breakfast with Stuart and Karen Laurie at their pub the Three King s. Stone Curlew, takes refuge in The Brecks When you ve finished riding you could visit the Chimney Mill Galleries, near the river at West Stow and meet Hilary and Adrian Smurfitt who exhibit paintings, sculpture and pottery by local artists. Chimney Mill also have a small livery and Hilary is very knowledgeable about horses. 2

3 THE ITINERARY: Lackford Lakes and West Stow Country Park, a little further west along the River Lark, are wonderful sites for enjoying local wildlife. Lackford Lakes has 100 hectares of wetlands with bird hides and a nature reserve. West Stow Country Park & Anglo-Saxon village comprises of a reconstructed Anglo-Saxon village is set in the 125- acre park. The Country Park is open all year and has a visitor centre, café, shop and children s play area. You an also fish at Ian McGregor's Larkwood Trout Fishery situated near the village of West Stow. If you ride as far as West Stow Country Park, you can pick up the Icknield Way and continue to The Golden Boar Inn at Icklingham for lunch. Riding in Thetford Forest From Bury St. Edmunds bus station it takes about 10 minutes to Culford on the No.332 bus and the same time to Fornham All Saints on the No.358. Brandon and Harling Drove At Brandon, on the western edge of Thetford Forest, you can hire a horse at the Forest Park Riding and Livery Centre and ride on the light sandy tracks in the forest. The centre also organises riding lessons, pony club events and own a pony days. The Little Ouse in Spring Riding in Thetford Forest is extensive, there are many forest tracks including the ancient Harling Drove that dates back to prehistoric times. It crosses the forest from east to west and has been used for centuries for taking flocks and herds from Fenland pastures to the market at East Harling. At Roudham Heath it crosses the Peddars Way National Trail. Leaflets on The Harling Drove for Riders is available in the Riding in the Brecks pack. If you bring your own horse, you can stay in a log cabin in the heart of the forest at Little Lodge Farm. At the farm there are stables and grazing in individual holiday paddocks, a floodlit menage and a two-mile cross-country course with 40 jumps. On days when you don t want to ride, Thetford Forest offers plenty of alternative activities, especially if you bring or hire a bike to get around. At the High Lodge Forest Centre you can hire a bike at Bike Art (who will deliver bikes to your accommodation) get lost in the Squirrel s maze and the family can use the adventure playground and visitor centre. If you arrive at High Lodge on foot or on a bike, you won t have to pay the car parking fee. If you re feeling energetic you could try Go Ape! the hire wire treetop trail adventure course. You can also walk or cycle to the neolithic flint mines at Grimes Graves, run by English Heritage. Go Ape! From Brandon you can walk to Thetford through the forest along the Little Ouse Path that follows the old towpath. It s a 10-mile walk and if you don t want to walk both ways you can return by train or use the Brecks bus. Details of the walk are in the Walking in the Brecks leaflet pack. You can reach Brandon from Thetford by train, the No.358 scheduled bus service, or book the Brecks bus. Safety in The Brecks Beware fast traffic on straight Brecks roads. Be seen! For safety s sake wear a fluorescent tabard. Stay mounted while crossing major roads. Wait until both directions are clear before attempting to cross. 3

4 THE ITINERARY: Bring your horse on holiday - Peddars Way The Peddars Way Bridle Route is a 25-mile route that takes you through the heart of the Norfolk Brecks on, or close to, the ancient Peddars Way from Roudham Heath to Fincham Drove. A leaflet with full details of the route is in the Riding in the Brecks pack (see Additional Information). The route links with Harling Drove so you can ride through to Thetford Chase and Thetford Warren, or it can join with the six miles of riding trails on Hockham and Stow Heath. This itinerary suggests four places you and your horse can stay and ride to the Peddars Way Bridle Route without having to box. Exmoor ponies at Knettishall Heath A mile from the Bridle Route at Great Cressingham, you can stay at The Vines 4 diamond bed and breakfast, a 16 th century house with mature gardens and orchard, and log fires for winter. Mike Woolnough runs The Vines in an environmentally friendly way, achieving a Green Tourism Business Scheme (bronze) Award and can offer open fields for grazing and, for a small charge, can provide hay. Storage is also available for bicycles. At Ashill, about a mile from the Peddars Way National Trail (2 miles north of the Peddars Way Bridle Route) is the 5-acre 3 star Brick Kiln Farm Caravan Park, set in meadows and woodland. Stables and grazing are available for horses. Brecks Wildflower Meadows Further south on the bridle route, close to Thompson Common, you can bed and breakfast at Home Farm, a 4 diamond bed & breakfast in Stow Bedon. It s about three miles to the Peddars Way Bridle Route past Thompson Common or you could head towards Hockham Common and join the Peddars Way there. Valerie and John Dove use local produce for their excellent farm breakfasts and run their business in an environmentally friendly way achieving a Green Tourism Business Scheme (Bronze) Award. Horses are welcome and stabling with bedding, hay and water is also available. Manor Farm, at Great Hockham, also offers 4 diamond bed and breakfast, and is 500 yards from Hockham forest where you can join the Peddars Way, about a two-miles away. Horses are welcome at this 450-yearold working farm and there are stables and paddock grazing, with hay and bedding available on request. The b&b is managed in an environmentally sensitive way and breakfasts are made from home and local produce. Miriam Mason is also happy to make delicious local produce packed lunches. Peddars Way - The Peddars Way links to the Norfolk Coast Path and is one of the National Trails. A free Pocket Companion has been printed which includes information on accommodation (highlighting those with stables, grazing fields and horsebox storage), places to visit and transport along the whole of the Peddars Way & Norfolk Coast Path from Knettishall Heath to Cromer. ISBN The Peddars Wayfarer (PW1 Bus Service) runs 2 journeys daily from Easter until the end of October 2006 but not through the Winter. It links villages along the Peddars Way from Thetford to Swaffham calling at Thetford Rail Station, Knettishall Heath, East Harling, Stonebridge, Harling Road, Great Hockham, Stow Bedon, Thompson, Watton, Saham Toney and Great Cressingham. 4

9 HOW TO GET THERE Train: Thetford station is on the Norwich to Cambridge line linking to the major railway network to all parts of UK. The journey time on Anglia Railways, operated by One, London to Thetford service (via Cambridge) takes just 1 hour 50 minutes. Cyclists with bicycles are welcomed on these trains and a range of excellent fares is available for cyclists and their bikes. Central Trains (Peterborough to Norwich line) stops at Lakenheath, Brandon, Thetford and Harling Road and on to Liverpool via Manchester Tel Rail stations are also at Bury St Edmunds and Kennet. For timetable information call National Rail Enquiries Bus: National Express operate a service from London Victoria to Norwich via Thetford and Attleborough with journey times to Thetford of only 1 hour 30 minutes. It can carry 5 people and a wheelchair. Contact them on Peddars Wayfarer Bus (PW1) runs twice daily between Thetford bus and rail stations and Swaffham market place, calling at villages and major access points along the Peddars Way.
