9 BAILIWICK OF GUERNSEY RECORD (ROD-CAUGHT) FISH COMMITTEE Notes for the Guidance of Claimants If you think you have caught a record fish in either the boat, shore, mini or freshwater categories:- 1 - Contact any of the Committee Members as soon as possible. (See list overleaf) 2 - Obtain the names and addresses of two witnesses to capture whenever possible, or - in the event of no witnesses to the actual capture being available - the names and addresses of some reliable persons who have actually seen the fish at the earliest possible time after capture. 3 - The fish should be weighed on modern, tested scales (see rule 3 below) and the correct weight entered on the claim form and verified by two independent witnesses who should not be relations of the claimant. Fish entered for the mini list (under 1lb. in weight) must be weighed on metric scales in grammes. In the case of sharks and other large species, the Committee suggests that the fish should be weighed on suitable commercial scales. To provide an adjudicating body to which anglers may submit claims for record fish taken by fair rod and line angling. To investigate all such record claims fully, and maintain a permanent record of such investigations. To establish, maintain and frequently publish list of fishes of record weight caught:- 4 - Preserve your fish intact. This is important until the fish has been positively identified. In the event of a delay occurring between the capture of the fish and formal identification of it by a Committee representative, arrange for it to be placed in a refrigerator - and, if possible, deep frozen. But have it accurately weighed and witnessed first. Fish may be kept alive in a keep net or container. 5 - Complete the official claim form, obtaining witnesses signatures where required, and submit it to a Committee member as soon as possible. 6 - Whenever possible, please support your claim with photographs. These should be large and in focus, showing as many of the specific characteristics of the species. Photograph the fish against a plain background with fins erect (so that fin rays may be counted) placing some object of known size (preferably a foot rule) beside it. 7 - The Committee will assist any angler to submit claims for British or World records upon request. The Committee s Aims and Objects Claims can be considered only if the following conditions are satisfied: 1 - Method of Capture: The fish must be caught by fair rod and line angling. Fish which have been foul-hooked cannot be considered. 2 - Identification: The fish must be identified to the Committee s satisfaction. 3 - Weighing: The fish must be weighed on commercial, club or the Record Committee scales and that weight accurately recorded. When weighing a fish, and the pointer on the scale of the weighing machine rests between graduations, the graduation below that resting place will be accepted as the accurate weight. In no circumstances will claims be considered for fish weighed on a boat, all fish must be weighed ashore. 4 - No claims will be considered in the case of a fish which is- (a) below the minimum retainable size or weight prescribed by law; (b) caught during a close season for that species; or (c) caught on any bait during a close season for that bait; (d) suffering from any disease by which the weight could be enhanced. 5 - The Committee reserves the right to reject any claim if not satisfied on any matter which it considers relevant. 6 - Each claim must be made on the official claim form which must be completed accurately in all details. 7 - Pontoons will be considered part of the shore when they are permanently attached to the shore with ready access at all states of tide. The Committee s Rules 1 - Within the area bounded by the median line with other countries fishing areas, the 12 mile limit from other countries and to a maximum limit of 30 miles from the nearest land in the Bailiwick; 2 - Inland waters (freshwater fish). To exchange record lists with the Jersey Record (Rod- Caught) Fish Committee annually; to agree Channel Islands record lists of fishes caught in the sea, and to publish these lists at least once annually. 8 - Claims for boat-caught fish will only be considered if the boat concerned has left and returned to a port in the Channel Islands within a 24 hour period, without calling at any port outside the Channel Islands. 9 - Boat caught fish taken in waters that are the responsibility of other countries, (including the Bailiwick of Jersey) or more than 30 miles from the shore line of the Bailiwick will not be considered The committee reserve the right to request a signed statement from the skipper of the boat, concerning the position of the capture of the fish, if any doubts exist, or the position of capture is close to any of the prescribed limits Fish must be caught on rod and line with any legal hook or lure, and hooked and played by one person only.
