4 Alderney Alderney is the third largest of the Channel Islands and is one of the principal islands of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. It is approximately 3.5 miles long by 1.5 miles wide and is about 2000 acres in extent. It is situated in the mouth of the English Channel, 8 miles due west of Cap de la Hague in Normandy and about 70 miles off the southern coast of England. Mainland UK is easily reached by regular flights to London and Southampton from Approx 45 mins. Alderney has its own democratically elected government able to create its own laws, presided over by a President and ten States Members. There is no EU interference in Alderney s affairs. Alderney is a tax efficient jurisdiction which benefits from no Capital Gains tax, no Inheritance tax, no VAT and income tax is capped at 20%. Alderney is renowned for its safety and quality of life. There is a strong sense of community throughout the island and there are a good selection of state and private schooling available. There is an excellent range of shops, restaurants and bars with local seafood being a culinary speciality. Alderney is the most open and rural of the Channel Islands due in part to its unique history. The island is a haven for wildlife and is home to over 300 species of birds being on the migratory route.
5 Life in Alderney Perhaps Alderney s greatest attribute is it s safety and quality of life. Being a small island with a population of only 2,400, crime is rarely known. Both state and private schooling are available on the island. There is a strong sense of community throughout the island with the people being extremely hospitable and sociable. Notable events through the year include a Seafood festival, Alderney Week and carnival, Alderney Air races, the Wildlife festival, golf championship, Alderney half marathon, Alderney Angling festival and numerous sailing competitions. Alderney is a relaxed, safe and friendly island with a great deal to offer, including a quiet stable way of life amidst beautiful surroundings and enjoying a generally warmer climate than that of the U.K. It has an excellent selection of shops, restaurants and bars, with local seafood a culinary speciality. Two brand new four star hotels are due to open in the near future. The Island also boasts an active tennis club and a challenging golf course renowned for its breathtaking views in all directions. The fishing and boating is superb and in addition numerous sports and social clubs thrive. Private flying is positively encouraged. Wildlife Alderney is the most open and rural of the Channel Islands, due in part to its unique history, and the existence of the Channel Island s only greenbelt, and is therefore a haven for wildlife. Over 9000 species of vascular plant are currently recorded on the island including rarities such as the spotted rockrose. The island is on the migratory route of many bird s. Its bird list contains almost 300 species, and includes 2% of the world s gannet population as well as fan-tailed and Dartford warblers. The island s proximity to France means that species found on mainland Europe but not in Britain are sometimes seen here. Among Alderney s more unusual residents are black rabbits and about 1,000 extremely rare blonde hedgehogs. Not albinos, these hedgehogs have a rare recessive gene giving rise to beady, buttonblack eyes and attractive creamy-coloured spines. Marine life is abundant around Alderney. A Puffin colony resides on the small outlying island of Burhou, and seals are regular visitors. Alderney offers some of the best fishing in all the Channel Islands. Alderney tax status Alderney is the only Channel Island tax haven with no property purchasing restrictions for British, EU and Old Commonwealth citizens. Domiciled residency for tax purposes is easily attainable. Benefits: No VAT. No inheritance tax and no capital gains tax for domiciled residents. Maximum 20% income tax. Corporation tax soon to become 0% for most businesses. Val des Portes Built around 1790, Val des Portes is a substantial Georgian house laid out over 3 floors. The house has a rich history and features fluted Corinthian columns framing an impressive front door. The house is said to have been the residence of the military commander of the island s garrison, yet a more recent document ponders whether it was for the naval commanding officer during the Napoleonic period because of the nautical motifs on the portico. All ground floor rooms are of a good size and the main reception rooms offer a sense of grandeur one would expect from a house of its size and importance. A striking staircase leads to a further reception room with wet room off, two bedrooms and a study. The second floor features a further five bedrooms and a family bathroom. The house is in need of some refurbishment and general updating.
