6 Fleetwood heritage Open days booklet 2018_Layout 1 24/07/ :56 Page 6 St Mary s Church Lord Street, Fleetwood This beautiful Grade II listed catholic church, designed by Edward W Pugin, has a very peaceful and serene atmosphere. Please come in, sit awhile and admire the stunning architecture and stained glass windows. Open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday 8.00am pm. Sunday mass 8.30am & 10.30am St Pauls Church Darbishire Road, Fleetwood 1. A brief history of the founding of St. Paul's Church. Towards the end of 1906 a group of people resigned their membership with the Parish Church of Fleetwood. They formed St Paul's Church, the first service was held in the Minor Hall of the Co-operative Society in London Street on Sunday 20th October Later they moved across the road to a hall, which they altered and prepared for worship. These were hard and difficult times for the little Church, but the congregation grew and flourished. In 1926 a Synod was held at St Paul's, attending was Mr. Stephen Frost Johnson a delegate from Christ Church Leigh-on-Sea, he was an architect and master builder and had built the church at Leigh-on-Sea. The church building in London Street was now in quite bad repair, Mr. Johnson felt he could not return home leaving the church like that so he purchased tools to repair the roof and render the front of the building. The congregation had already purchased a plot of land in Darbishire Road referred` to then as a new part of the town. Mr. Johnson also bought a small block making machine and he showed a very willing band of volunteers from the congregation how to make the blocks to build the new church, promising to come back the following year to build it.the congregation started raising funds to buy the materials; they worked tirelessly to make the vast number of blocks needed, giving their time, money, talents and energy, often working into the night by the aid of lamps. This truly was a labour of love for the Lord. Their wives and children took their meals to them and helped in any way they could. Mr. Johnson returned to Fleetwood at the Easter of 1927 and with the help of a working party that came from all walks of life they started to build the church. Everyone worked in some way and amazingly the church was completed in less than six months. The first service was held on Wednesday 31st August 1927 when the Church was officially opened. We are still a self-supporting Church; the congregation give their time, money, talents and energy. We look to the future as we spread the Gospel, as we praise and worship the Lord at Paul s. 2. There will be photos of the building of the church, and a written history on the display board in the church. 3. We will be open to the public on the 13th, 14th, and 15th of September and there will be refreshments of tea coffee and biscuits available.

7 Fleetwood heritage Open days booklet 2018_Layout 1 24/07/ :57 Page 7 Emmanuel at the Mount Fleetwood FY7 6RE The Mount Church was originally built as a Sunday School for the Primitive Methodists at the beginning of the 20th Century when some 300 children attended. The Memorial Hall contains plaques commemorating those who fell in both World Wars. The Church was built on the lines of a traditional Methodist Church. The tour will consist of a walk around the Church taking in the various parts. The Main Sanctuary can hold up to 300 people which includes the Balcony area. Sadly, the balcony will be out of bounds for the tour due to Health and Safety issues. The Wesley Room, Fisherman s Chapel and Memorial Hall are all part of the original 1908 building with the Community Hall being opened in Presently owned by Emmanuel Church, a refurbishing programme is commencing in July this year to keep it in good shape for the future. The external appearance will remain as the Church is in a Conservation Area. Being the nearest Church to the sea in the town, it has always had a place in the hearts of the local Trawlermen and their families which, it is hoped, will remain. Open Saturday 10.00am noon and pm and Sunday 2.00pm pm Trinity Baptist Church Poulton Rd, Fleetwood Trinity Baptist Church was established in Fleetwood in On July 1st 2018 the church celebrates its 93rd year. The Church s is currently lead by Rev George Ayoma who has been pastor here since 2007, combining that role with his work for The Fishermen s Mission, as the local superintendent, since The Church is commonly seen by many as the spiritual home for many local families who are linked to Fleetwood fishing history. The Fishermen s Mission is a National maritime charity, still looking after the welfare of career fishermen for over 137 years. Open Thursday morning after the service Nautical Heritage Walk Lower Lighthouse to Jubilee Quay and Dock Street. Walk back in time to discover Fleetwood s proud nautical heritage. 10 Fleetwood heritage Open days booklet 2018_Layout 1 24/07/ :33 Page 10 The Marine Hall The Marine Hall and Gardens complex sits overlooking the beaches of Fleetwood. At its centre is an original art deco theatre. The beautiful building, opened in 1935 has retained many of its original features, including the huge 9 meter diameter stained glass dome that dominates the room. The dome provides a magnificent centrepiece for the historic hall. National Lottery Funding boost for The Mount, Fleetwood Wyre Council is delighted to have been awarded a 2 million grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund to continue its work to revive the Mount Pavilion and Gardens in Fleetwood. The seaward side was restored last year thanks to a 1m personal donation from Mrs Doreen Lofthouse. This involved work to reinstate the Victorian railings, restore the shelters, repair the pathways and create new rockeries and planting. The council s first-round application to the Heritage Lottery Fund Parks for People programme was also approved in January 2017 which supported research, planning, and pilot activities in order to prepare a second-round application submitted earlier this year. Now approved this new grant together with the generous donation from Mrs Lofthouse, will fund the restoration of the garden areas that have yet to be touched including the pavilion and lodge. The Mount is an iconic structure and a Grade II registered garden designed by the eminent architect and landscape designer Decimus Burton in the 1800s. The pavilion, originally built in 1901 will now be restored and brought back into regular use as an education centre, exhibition space and a function room for public events and receptions. The team working on the project at the council has sent layers of paint from different parts of the building to be analysed to find out what colours to use in the restoration. It was discovered that the original woodwork on the outside of the building was a dark green and the walls were a pale shade of cream, which will now be replicated as part of the scheme. The lodge building will also be restored. The upper floor will be opened as a tearoom and the lower floors, which are inaccessible at present, will be used as a base for volunteers helping on the grounds and by an artist and scientist who will run activities. The Mount
