1 M E R R Y X M A S Tim Fargher The newsletter for the community of Orford and Gedgrave COPY DATE FOR JANUARY VILLAGE VOICE IS THURSDAY DECEMBER 18TH ORFORD AND GEDRAVE PARISH COUNCIL AND NEW ORFORD TOWN TRUST The Parish Council and New Orford Town Trust would like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. Please note that the Town Hall office will close at 11.00am on Tuesday 23 rd December for the Christmas break. It will re -open at 9.00am on Tuesday 6 th January CHILDREN S PARTY - The annual Children s Party is to be held on Saturday 20 th December 2014 between 2.00pm pm in the Town Hall. Thanks go to the NOTT for the use of the Hall and this year it is to be sponsored by Friend s Garage, Orford. AFTERNOON TEA this year will be held on Wednesday 17 th December 2014 between 3.00pm pm in the Recreation Hut. Please contact Anne Macro on for further information on either event. OUTDOOR GYM - This has been very well used by people in the village and outside the village. Please note it is advisable to take a cloth or towel with you as the seats get a little damp! EMERGENCY PLAN Following a recent meeting of the Orford Emergency Group the updated Emergency plan document is printed on the last page of this copy of Village Voice, and is displayed around the village. In the event of a serious tidal breach authorities may recommend evacuation of properties. They cannot insist on evacuation, but can only recommend it. However, please note that any subsequent rescue would be extremely difficult as rescue boats are not readily available and helicopter availability may be very limited depending on the scale of any flooding over the rest of the region. CATTLE BARGE Ralph Brinkley s old cattle barge is in a serious state of disrepair. Given that it is no longer wholly original and has been subject to patching up over the years, NOTT is proposing to dispose of it. Please let us know if you have any other suggestions. TOWN HALL BOOKINGS If you wish to use the Town Hall or borrow tables/chairs, please ensure that you book this through the Clerk at the Town Hall office (telephone ) and do not simply borrow a key from a key holder. Please do come along and buy a copy - it makes a great gift! Caroline Bailey LIGHTHOUSE NEWS AND A NEW YEAR'S DAY WALK Trinity House have just spent two weeks at the lighthouse removing the main and sector optics for safe-keeping. A sad moment, but it was always part of the arrangements. The lighthouse remains very sound and is still an architectural gem. Visits are still encouraged. It is there for everyone. The view from the top, without the main optic taking up the bulk of the space, is in many ways even more impressive. With luck the weather over the New Year will be better than last time and those from Orford and surrounding villages are offered the opportunity to visit the lighthouse on New Year's Day. The arrangements will be to go over on "Regardless" at a.m. ( 3 a head return) from Orford Quay and then walk to the lighthouse for some mulled wine. The return boat should get everyone back on the mainland in time for lunch by, say, 1.30 p.m. Will those interested in going on the walk please contact me on either on orfordnesslighthouse@gmail.com or speak to me directly so that I can get some idea of numbers. Thank you again to everyone for your wonderful support over the past year. It has made the whole thing incredibly worthwhile. I never quite appreciated before quite how much everyone in the community felt for "their" lighthouse. My mistake!" Nicholas Gold

We are pleased to announce that, due to the generosity of the Orford Business Association, children under 12 will be able to see this modern classic on the big screen free of charge. At 7.30 we will be screening the perennial Christmas favourite, It s a Wonderful Life with James Stewart. Details can be found on the insert in this month s Village Voice. The Town Hall Cinema AGM will be held on December 17 th when progress will be reviewed, the Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary will be elected and future events planned. As you may know the cinema relies on volunteers to keep running and legal, (Health and Safety etc.) and more volunteers are URGENTLY needed to keep the cinema going. Apart from the committee roles, jobs such as putting out the chairs, manning the desk etc. as well as keeping everyone safe, needs bodies to help. Please let us know at townhallcinema@gmail.com if you wish to attend the AGM and/or if you are able to help. The time and location will be posted on the Town Hall Cinema page at orford.org.uk/community/town-hall-cinema Roger Hipwell THE KING S HEAD It s 6 months now since we took over at The King s Head and how time flies when you are having fun. Our trip round the world s cuisine has taken us as far flung as India, Mexico and closer to home, Spain. We are taking a break from these taste bud tantalising travels for the Christmas and New Year period before taking off again in If you haven t planned your Christmas meal yet there is still time to book to dine with us at The Kings Head, our menu is on our website; and is available Thursday through to Saturday up to and including Christmas Eve, pre-booking is required. Congratulations to Matthew Smy on winning our Halloween Adnams Ghost Ship quiz, we hope you enjoy your trip for two to Adnams Sole Bay Brewery. Thanks to all who entered and for raising funds for East Anglia Children s Hospices. Our music nights continue with Lisa Sanchez getting everyone in the mood for partying on Saturday 13 th December. Lisa s huge repertoire and wide range of songs cover from the 1950 s through to the present day. Steve Boyce played his first ever gig in Orford last month and blew everyone away with his amazing guitar skills, so much so that we have booked him to play again on Christmas Eve. Don t miss the opportunity to see him as the hours tick down to Christmas Day. Keeping the momentum rolling, we have a Hot and Cold Buffet Spectacular on New Year s Eve, which is pre-booking only at 22 per person. Chef Louis has big plans for this and we are sure you won t be disappointed. Seeing us through to Midnight and into the small hours of 2015 we have Dave Taylor performing. Ever popular with the Orford crowds Dave is playing once again to ensure we all leave 2014 behind us in party mood and greet 2015 still in full flow. Entry is free at all our music events and everybody is welcome. Remember our Pie and Pint for a tenner is every Wednesday evening. The most interesting pie to date goes to Skippy and Dave Pie, Kangaroo and Rabbit! Skippy is obvious and Dave is our KP who never stops talking!! Don t worry if you prefer wine to beer or cyder because you can have a glass of House Wine instead. Once again we would like to thank everyone for their continued support and wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous and fun packed New Year. We are open between 12noon and 2.00pm on Christmas Day and would be delighted to see you all and pass on the Season s Greetings in person. Ian & Suzanne Ballantine ORFORD BUTCHER It was with a sad heart that I read about the Orford Butcher s closing down. I was the butcher there for over 11 years, firstly under Richard and Kathy Willan, then Natasha and Mike Hodge and finally Penny Teale. During my time there it went from strength to strength. It will be sorely missed by a lot of people both in Orford and further afield who were loyal customers and FRIENDS for many years. Considering the impact this is going to have on so many people is closing it the only option??? Possibly with the right person in charge it could once again be a profitable business and an asset to the whole village. Andrew Page SUDBOURNE ANNUAL FISH AND CHIP SUPPER Sudbourne Village Hall annual fish and chip supper on Saturday 6 th December 7.00pm for 7.30pm. Proceeds for the maintenance of the hall. We also have bingo on Friday 19 th December with a Christmas Draw (if you would like to donate a prize, please bring on the night or drop it off at the garage to Mark, many thanks). We would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year Sheila Osborne - SECRETARY ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENT IN SUDBOURNE I am trying to contact anyone who witnessed a road traffic accident involving my Silver Nissan Navara and a Nissan Almera outside Chequers in Sudbourne at around 5 o clock last Saturday evening, 15th November. Two kind gentlemen stopped to help but I failed to get their contact details. If anyone witnessed the accident or knows these two young men I would be grateful if they could contact me to help sort out my insurance claim. Tracy Ranger - rangers.gedgrave@talk21.com ORFORD BONFIRE AND FIREWORK NIGHT A Massive Thank You to everyone who was involved, from the venue, building of the Bonfire, making of the Guy, helping with the Fireworks, Buckets, BBQ and Clearing up. I cannot name everyone as there are so many who do help over the months before lighting up. We have raised enough for next year due to the support and generous donations given. We would also like to invite the Killjoys to our next meeting to air their grievances as this is getting childish every year, details of next meeting to follow. One final Thank You to the Environment Agency with whom we are now on first name terms. The EMERGENCY GROUP will assess the risk posed to the community and use the map in the Hall to identify persons at risk. They will ensure that the appropriate emergency services (fire, police, ambulance, red cross) have been alerted. They will plan the action needed and contact the COMFORT GROUP to prepare the Town Hall, the ATLAS GROUP for physical assistance, and other resources as necessary. The Town Hall will be made ready to receive those in need of refuge (who should bring blankets, duvets, food, drink and personal medication).
