Tel: Jamie & Chris 11 More From Off Road Ray Once he starts there is no stopping him! Bike front news. Having built a new shed, (don t tidy up, build a new shed) 16ft by 9ft, which will hereafter be known as the Operating Theatre, Mike and I have bought two cheapo bikes (but not as cheap as a Whooshy (at least the Whooshy works)). These are a Suzuki A two stroke and the first Honda CGIS of 1976 vintage. The Suzuki arrived in bits and the Honda soon will be! Both bikes will be brought up to running order on a tight budget in order to attain that well worn look. This will bring many happy hours of black finger nails over the coming years (or as Ray put it months). The next ride a Bike night is the target for completion, do we ever really finish them? So here goes with a big tin of Gunk and a brand new set of Metric Spanners. PS. The Suzuki A100 appears to be a rarity as a trip to Netley Autojumble failed to produce a single item towards its restoration. Do you know of any parts out there? Please let Alan know of your current projects / repairs / mechanical goings on and any recommendations for suppliers or help you have received. Rambling Ray

4 4 The searchers Netley September 7th On a foggy day Ray, Bryn and Alan set off for Netley Marsh Eurojumble Mike N. usually comes with us but was tempted away by the chance to travel by camper van. As we passed Honiton I suggested we ought to have taken the A35. Five miles on, the rest of the party agreed and we went to Dorchester via the scenic route! All went well until the M27 where the turn off at junction 1 should have been taken, because of confusion we came off at junction 10. On asking the locals where Netley was we were directed to Botley via Old Netley then on to Netley having been told that was where we ought to be by a traffic officer. A local yokel then put us on the right track back to junction 1 and Netley Marsh! Interesting morning, we found that there are four Netleys. Netley, Old Netley, Netley Abbey, and Netley Marsh. On arriving at Netley Marsh we found a map in the depths of the car boot. Next time we use Sat Nav and ensure we know where the map is. What did I buy? A bulb holder that will not hold a bulb. What a gay day! Alan. 9 The sun did shine at the BBQ
5 8 When wondering how to fill a page I thought, what about a short history of each other? So I will start with me. Born 17/06/1938 at 36 Homefield Road Heavitree, one sister called Marion three years older, sadly no longer with us. School Ladysmith and then after passing the 11+ went to Exeter Technical School situated in Army huts in Belmont park. Work Booking clerk at Cullompton Station then joined the RAF as an aircraft electrician where I worked on a variety of aircraft eg. Shackleton, Vampire, Meteor, Chipmunk, Sycamore, Hastings, Anson, Valetta, Mosquito, Spitfire, and Javelin to mention a few. Finished on a Search and Rescue helicopter Squadron. Sometimes as third crew man. After the RAF. A variety of jobs from battery repair to electro mechanical servicing via insurance sales. I ended up teaching office machinery servicing for eleven years in a Government Skill Centre based in Swindon. Being in the Civil Service I went through a selection board and ended as a Higher Instructional Officer, and as is the rule had to move, so returned to Exeter as a Youth Service Contract Manager. Retirement came at 60 when I was asked to work part time for the Careers Service. This I still do. Married This is me! Do we really know each other? Married to Margaret in1964. Bikes Passed the test in 1954 on a LE Velocette, no performance and brakes to match. Second bike 1938 BSA Empire Star (wish I still had it! ) Third bike which was bought in 1957 is the one I still have, my 1950 Royal Enfield Bullet. And, don t forget the Whooshey. So there you are who is next for a short CV? Alan The Barbecue, Chapter 2. Avid readers will recall the magneto saga where the Bullet stopped firing on two occasions during the run back from the barbecue. I told my tale of woe to Cyril Butt who suggested that I send it, (the magneto, not the Bullet) to a chap he uses known as; APL Magnetos, Paul Lydford, 1 Maple Close, Shaftesbury, Dorset, SP7 8RF So I did and had it returned within five days repaired and ready to fit. All at a cost of 143 including return postage, which is less than the 250 charged by another firm which repaired a similar magneto for me. Paul will repair the unit, mag or dynamo, and will either have it sandblasted and posh or the exterior condition left as is. I asked him to leave it repaired and scruffy, because if it was poshed up I would have to clean the bike and change the habit of a lifetime. On receipt of the repaired unit I fitted it to the bike and it started first kick. Rode up to Cyril s to give it a try and was offered a cake but had nothing to bring it home in. Will pop up again ASAP. So I would recommend Paul Lydford if you ever require magneto or dynamo repairs. Alan. Any other good guys out there? 5
6 6 More Regalia Frank Eveleigh has been busy on behalf of the club, and has managed to get a deal on mugs and key rings which sport the club logo. The mugs are only 4.00 and the key rings even less. As a bonus it is possible to have a picture of your bike printed on the mug if you can provide a good photo of it. At present this addition to the regalia is being sold at cost so get your orders in to Frank before we add a percentage to help club funds! You could always pay over the odds as a donation of course!! 7 Letter from Off Road Ray our Chairman Sept 2012 Already into my stride as Chairman, I would like to thank all members for the warm welcome I have received to date. Thank you for your support. The role of chair is one of part pleasure and part anxiety. Hoping that the meeting will go off well and that members will enjoy their evening, and hopefully be encouraged to participate in club activities. I sometimes feel that I am not wholly appropriate for the post; I only ride dinky little bikes. Because of family commitments I have never been on the Dartmoor Run, but I can offer enthusiasm and dedication to our club and a desire to see us all at meetings for many years to come. We have a lovely bunch of people who regularly attend the first Mondays, some who cannot but still support us, and a warm sense of camaraderie amongst us, plus a 22 year background behind us. It is worthy of note that we have raised well over 25,000 for our charities, we should be well proud of this. We now have an excellent committee (probably the best ever) both old and new members, and this was a big part of my reason to stand this year. (As a master of delegation I expect them to do all of the work)! I won t single out any one of them, but the club should be delighted with their valuable input. Here s to many more happy meetings and success in our events and fundraising do s for this and the coming years. Nice looking mug perched on Council Wheelie Bin, yours for The mug, not the bin! Best wishes to all members. Chairman Ray (PS, more ramblings later)
