5 Hi Rose Lovers PLEASE NOTE: The correct date for our pruning day at Peace Park is the 15th. July, We need slices for Morning Tea and saleable goods for the stall. We also need members to assist with pruning of roses including picker uppers. We will also have the Kiama Garden club joining us with their Plants Pots & Posies. Pass the word around to your neighbours and friends to come along. Please support our meeting on the 24th. June. Everyone can join in our Crazy Show Bench see details in this Magazine heaps of prizes, so join in the fun. Also pick up some ideas on pruning. Editors Note: Publication of The Illawarra Regional Rose Society June 2017 The Illawarra Rose Society aims to encourage, improve and extend the cultivation and appreciation of the Rose. CHAIRPERSON S REPORT The 22nd July is our AGM. Nomination Form is in this Magazine. After 13 years as the Secretary Helen would like to see someone nominate instead, Helen will stay on as Assistant Secretary if required. Also, Jill would like to see someone take on the role of Treasurer, please give this some thought. Plans are well under way for the planning of our Spring Rose Show on the 28th & 29th. October When the public arrives they will be greeted with a display of the Elina Class in the foyer and we need your help to promote the best show in Australia. Following our Show, on the 18th & 19th November 2017 there will be a Mini-Flora & Miniature Rose Show in the Southern Highlands Region to take place at the Mittagong RSL. This has created interest particularly for those who only have a balcony now, which means they can grow same in pots and there are those who want to grow miniatures in their garden. Hope you are having fun preparing your soil for new bare rooted roses remember to use some Semungus in the bottom of the hole & don t use any fertilizers at this stage. Have Fun! - Yours in Roses-Robert Curll. Hi everyone! - well another year has flown past us; time flies when you are having fun! Some of the highlights during the year have been the clarification of Rose Society of NSW Inc. Constitution requirements, the introduction of Rose Growing Workshops, the newly formed Southern Highlands and UNSH Upper North Shore & Hills Regional Areas and a very successful Sydney Royal Easter Show. These activities have contributed to increased membership to Rose Society of NSW Inc. As we move into the 21 st Century, maintaining current Rose Society membership at all regional areas, continues to pose significant challenge for our Society. We must continue the great work done to date, maintain our momentum in this space and also attract younger members into our Rose Societies in future. I am pleased to report that membership at an Illawarra Regional level continues to stay healthy and strong in numbers. We should all be very proud of our achievements this year! On behalf of the Rose Society of NSW Inc. I thankyou all for your tireless efforts in maintaining our membership at the Illawarra Regional level and for your support in the past year. Lawrence Zammit-Editor 5

6 ELINA The Newsletter of the Rose Society of NSW Inc. Illawarra Page 6 Did You Know? WHY IS MY ROSE NOT FLOWERING? There are a few reasons why a rose will not grow and many of these are grouped collectively as Spring Sickness. When you plant a bare root rose it will not normally start to grow immediately, it will wait for the correct conditions before it will break dormancy. This may be after your established roses have started to leaf, a notorious one for this is Papa Meilland (although once growing it is spectacular). As a general rule - If it is green, it will grow (with the correct conditions). The first and most common reason is - WATER: - this is mostly shown by green stems with a black tip which will progress down the stem toward the graft. This is called Die Back. You may loose one branch while the other is green as the plant is trying to save itself. The only other common cause of Die Back is fertilizing at the time of planting. Roses are 75% water, like most living things, and in their first year require a lot of water given in a way that encourages the roots to go down into the soil. Roots of plants watered lightly everyday will stay near the top of the soil which results in the plant being susceptible to heat stress. After a first good year of growth and the roots have established themselves, they will require less. It is recommended that a dripper system is used to water the roses as it will push the water down in one spot without wasting our precious resource. A dripper in normal conditions will have to be on for an hour to water effectively giving 10 ltrs in one watering. Hoses, sprinklers and watering cans do not water efficiently. If in doubt try the following: Get an old 10 litre bucket and put four holes in the base. b) Fill with plain water and put beside the plant so the bottom of the bucket is in direct contact with the soil. c) It will take an hour to empty and do this twice a week. In summer, watering is done two to three times a week depending on the severity of the weather and your soil conditions. Sandy soil needs more water than this, as it does not hold moisture for a length of time. THE WEATHER IS TOO COLD: - Roses like to be warm and go to sleep if chilled. The length of dormacy varies from state to state with Queensland and other warm states getting very little if any, to Tasmania and Victoria getting three months. As an example - a rose planted in late May in a cold climate will not break dormancy till Late August or early September. If a cold snap is experienced for a considerable time, then this may cause the sap to stop flowing on a plant and turn it dormant. GLYPHOSPATE USE: - In the past that some gardeners have been known to prepare new beds by spraying a herbicide or weed killer on the ground before building up the soil. In this situation, glyphosate - the main ingredient contained in such chemicals - will stay in the soil for extended periods of time, causing damage to any roses being planted there. Spraying the garden edge or spray drift from another part of the garden can also effect roses. Beware of purchasing soil which has been kept weed free by spray. Roses have a bad response to Glyphosate and will either not break dormancy or will grow, but with multiple spiky leaves coming from the leaf buds.. PLANTING A ROSE WHERE ONE HAS BEEN BEFORE: - Roses do not like being crowded. In nature they prevent this by releasing a chemical into the soil to claim their spot, inhibiting any other roses from growing to close to their roots. This chemical will last in the soil for a year, after the plant has died or is removed, before wearing out. If you wish to plant a rose back in the same spot as a rose was previously planted, then you will have to change the soil. A rose will stay dormant or grow very poorly if this is NOT done. ph. IMBALLANCE : Roses need a ph of around 6.5 which is slightly on the acidic side of neutral. If the ph is too high then a growing rose will develop yellow in the leaves. If too acidic it may not grow at all. Use a ph test kit from your local garden centre to test the soil. If the results indicate poor soil levels, adjust your ph. route=information/information&information_id=138 6

7 ELINA The Newsletter of the Rose Society of NSW Inc. Illawarra Page 7 Illawarra Cultural Notes: Before planting bare root roses soak the plants in a bucket of water with seaweed solution for at least two hours. Make a mound in the hole and place the roots over and down around the mound. The bud union needs to be facing north or west and sitting 3-5cm above ground level. Backfill the soil halfway up the hole. Water well, poking around the roots to maintain soil and root contact. Let this drain for minutes, then back fill to soil level and water lightly. This will minimise air pockets. Do not use fertiliser in the planting hole as this will likely burn the new roots that develop. We recommend using Neutrog s Seamungus in June and July as it is an excellent soil conditioner, gentle acting, and it will help plants settle in and get growing new roots and shoots ready for spring. Miniature Roses for the Australian Garden Available in many types and flower colours and suitable for growing in pots as well as in the garden border, miniature roses make a great addition to the rose collection. Available from good rose nurseries miniatures of many types may be purchased online from mail order rose nurseries. They have all the characteristics of their larger relatives in a smaller package, a smaller growth habit including smaller flowers and smaller leaves. Flowers are usually no larger than 5cm and they grow to no more than 50cm in height. Generally they are very hardy, and many are repeat flowering. Varieties, Types and Cultivars: Miniature roses have become very popular over the past 15 years, however they are not new to the garden world, its just taken a while for breeders to get them onto the Baby Jack market. Miniature Kaikoura is a deep red rose that flowers throughout the season an excellent choice. Starina is a warm reddish apricot color with attractive dark green foliage and at less the.5m is an excellent choice for a low boarder on the rose garden or for growing in a pot or container. Tom Thumb, Baby Boomer, Child s Play, Tracey Wickham, Starina, and yes you can get climbing mini roses and trailing mini roses. Growing Notes Care for Miniature Roses: Grow them in Pots or in the garden. Miniature roses grow well in pots, they are also great for garden borders. Try a large terracotta pot, they look great. Care: Miniature roses need the same growing conditions and care as other roses, just not so much pruning. You will need some sharp secatures as the smaller growth can be a little tricky to cut. Watch out for the usual diseases, black spot, and of course thrips. Growing Mini Roses Indoors: A bright sunny position is required, however remember that when placed close to a Figurine window pots dry out very quickly, and plants can burn. So avoid extreme heat and use a pot that is insulated and will not heat up to quickly. All roses. including the little ones prefer a cool root run. 7

New Applications for IRS Membership: TBA Page 8 * Library Details courtesy of Rosalind Walter * Website details courtesy of Kristin Dawson Rose of the Month: Innocence Miniature Rose The Innocence Miniature Rose has up to 50 perfectly recurved, soflty coloured petals unfurl on each high-centered bloom of this lovely miniature! 'Innocence' is an exquisite shrub, a little slice of perfection in a habit so neat you can pop it into a flowerpot or give it pride of place in the front of the rose garden. Few roses are so beautifully formed and nicely coloured, not to mention lightly, sweetly scented. Though just 35 mm wide, these flowers have all the majesty and beauty of full-sized hybrid teas. They open from pointed ovoid buds, the ivory petals unfurling to reveal a heart of softest pink. Redolent of tea roses, they are a romantic dream of a bloom, and they appear not just once or twice but in waves all summer long!. You will find it long-lived, easy to care for, and exquisitely beautiful. Every landscape deserves these softly coloured, subtly fragrant, beautiful blooms! 'Innocence' is an upright, spreading shrub, very compact, reaching just 65 cm in height and wide at maturity. It is well-branched, with healthy dark green foliage and good disease resistance. Equally at home in containers or the sunny border, it makes an excellent foreground planting to larger roses, mingles well with perennials, and can be used in the front of the foundation. 'Innocence' was bred by famed American rosarian F. Harmon Saville, who revolutionized the use of miniature roses in the garden. Once merely hot-house roses, they are now as cold-hardy and vigorous as their full-sized cousins, thanks in no small measure to Mr. Saville. 'Innnocence' was released in 1997 and has become increasingly popular as the trend toward outdoor living means more container plants. So why not include 'Innocence' to your garden or deck this season? *Details provided in this section of the Elina publication can be obtained by visiting 8
