7 IT S ALL ABOUT THE FAIRWAYS AND TRAILS ON JUNE 16 WITH THE FRIENDS OF DES MOINES PARKS Join the Friends of Des Moines Parks for their fourth annual fundraiser event FORE! Our Parks golf outing and bike ride to take place Friday, June 16 at Waveland Golf Course (4908 University Avenue) starting at noon. On the 18-mile bike ride, cyclists will use eight city trails that connect to five parks before returning to the Waveland clubhouse. Last year s event raised over $30,000 and organizers are looking to continue that momentum this year as funds are earmarked for a new playground for Chesterfield Park and Des Moines River Trail Phase II (Cownie Soccer Complex to Easter Lake Park) Cost is $150 for individuals, $500 for foursomes or $75 per cyclists or $125 for two cyclists. Registration is available online at friendsofdmparks.org. The Friends of Des Moines Parks provided over $100,000 in sponsorships and donations to parks and recreation projects and programs last year. DISC GOLF COMES TO PROSPECT PARK Des Moines now has four disc golf courses with the addition of a new 18-hole course recently completed at Prospect Park. Funded through a donation by the Des Moines Disc Golf Club, the course was named after Becky Zallek, who tragically passed away in 2013 and was known for her strong passion about the sport and furthering its growth locally. Zallek was instrumental in bringing several major disc golf events to the area in the early 2000 s and was named to the Disc Golf Hall of Fame in The new course layout takes advantage of previously unused areas of the park and winds its way through pristine woodlands. This provides a scenic round for players with variety of options from long to short holes and a mix of terrain. To view the course map, along with the other courses at Grandview, Ewing and Pete Crivaro Parks, please visit dmparks.org. GET OUT AND GOLF THIS YEAR The three Des Moines public golf courses (A.H. Blank, Waveland, and Bright Grandview) are ready for another great season. Look no further for affordable rates, with greens fees ranging from as low as $12 to walk nine holes on weekdays at Grandview to just $47 to play 18 holes with a cart at Waveland on weekends. The courses vary dramatically in design ranging from tree placement and sand traps to green size, which offers golfers a different experience each round. All three courses underwent improvements in In addition to a major project on hole #3 at Waveland, the area around tee box on hole #7 was modified and forested area was thinned for improved tree health and increased visibility around the course. The Waveland clubhouse also saw a major upgrade with the addition of a Golf Performance Studio in the basement. This serves as year-round club fitting and instruction area. Blank saw several cosmetic changes with the painting of the clubhouse and the full re-carpeting of the miniature golf course. Additional services include Fat Joe s Pizza, GPS systems in the carts at Waveland and Blank and free sledding during the winter months. Besides being used for corporate outings, tournament and every day rounds of golf, all three golf courses can be rented for your wedding, birthday party or holiday get together. There are golf specials throughout the week including discounts all day on Wednesdays at Grandview as well as youth, senior and military discounts. Season passes are available for purchase at any of the courses always starting January 1. For a full list of details about any of the three courses visit dmparks.org and click on Golf. HAVE MORE FUN FOR LESS MONEY If your household meets the established income guidelines, your income is verified, and you are a resident of the city of Des Moines, you can qualify to receive discounts on swim lessons, tennis lessons, basketball and much more! Call IMPACT Community Action Partnership at to schedule an appointment or walk-in at th Avenue or 3226 University Avenue. There were 654 GRASP Cards Issued in MACRAE PARK IS GETTING A MAKEOVER MacRae Park, one of the city s oldest parks located at 1021 Davis Avenue will undergo a major transformation over the next 18 months. Renovations have already begun on the upper enclosed shelter and road. When completed, the new facility will have a very similar look and style to the Jay Spence Shelter at Greenwood Park. The project will enclose the open air shelter, add new restrooms and outdoor grilling terrace creating a year round use facility and with a capacity of 40 will make a wonderful spot for special events in IMPROVED FAIRMONT PARK TO RE-OPEN THIS FALL Fairmont Park, a 5-acre neighborhood park founded in 1964 and located at 2520 E Hull Avenue, is undergoing a complete renovation this summer. Des Moines Parks and Recreation staff worked closely with the Fairmont Neighborhood Association to determine which new amenities would serve their citizens best and what currently makes Fairmont Park special and needs to be preserved or enhanced. As a result, all who visit the park will enjoy a new sprayground, playground, shelter, path system, hillside slide and site furnishings, while existing views of downtown, impressive trees and open hilly spaces known for great sledding are preserved. We are grateful to citizens for their input and look forward to re-opening Fairmont Park by early fall 2017 to provide enhanced play opportunities and better service to the neighborhood. COMMUNITY CENTERS TO OFFER EXPANDED HOURS STARTING IN JULY Following the significant renovations to both Four Mile and Pioneer Columbus Community Centers in 2016, the hours of the facilities will be changed to include three additional hours on weeknights. Starting July 3, both facilities will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Weekend activities will include scheduled programs and both locations will still be available for rentals. In addition, there will be new programs and a drop-in gym schedule. The facilities will also undergo a name change and officially be referred to as Community Recreation Centers. For more information about the new schedule and programming visit dmparks.org.
