Bus Stop Confusion: From Blue Star to Anna Nagar Tower By N Rathi Chithra ver since the E Metro Rail service was launched in Anna Nagar a year ago, bus commuters and those travelling by auto rickshaw including share auto rickshaws are getting confused between the Blue Star bus stop and the one at Anna Nagar Tower. It all started with the Metro Rail authorities naming the Blue Star station as Anna Nagar Tower station. They even named it in Tamil as Anna Nagar Gopuram something that not many are familiar with. Consequent to this change the Metropolitan Transport Corporation authorities also renamed the Blue Programme for Sr. citizens Thenner Arangam for senior citizens (+50) organised by Dignity foundation will be held at No.132 Old No,52A, AK Block, 7th Main Road, Anna Nagar (4 p.m to 5.30 p.m). Old time residents of Anna Nagar say the Blue Star bus stand which is ahead of State Bank of India s Anna Nagar West Branch and after the 12th Main Road bus stop, was named after a shop that was located in the vicinity. After the launch of Metro Rail the authorities have renamed the Blue Star bus stop as Anna Nagar Tower Bus stop. This is causing a lot of confusion for us. People who buy tickets for Blue Star sometimes refuse to get down here after seeing the name of the Metro Rail station as Anna Nagar Tower. There are also commuters who buy tickets for Anna Nagar Tower but insist on getting down here despite us telling them that it is actually the next bus stop, says a conductor of bus plying on route 7H which connects Mogappair East with Broadway. The original Anna Nagar Tower bus stop is actually located next to the Ayyappan Temple. Once a passenger who boarded my auto rickshaw insisted on getting down at Blue Star after seeing the signboard at the bus stop announcing that it was Anna Nagar Tower. I was trying to convince her that we had to proceed further to reach her destination. But she refused to accept my point and accused me of fleecing her. Fearing trouble, I stopped here and cut the meter, laments Madan Kumar, an auto rickshaw driver who operates in and around Anna Nagar area. Some bus passengers actually get down at Blue Star instead of Anna Nagar Tower, which is there destination. I was once travelling by bus with my relatives and cousins including toddlers hoping to take them to the Anna Nagar Tower. After seeing the signboard from the window seat, I quickly asked everyone to get down at this place without realising it was Blue Star bus stop. Poor toddlers had to walk all the way from here to the Anna Nagar Tower. I hope that the authorities concerned act immediately and change the names of this bus stop and Metro Rail Station to Blue Star to avoid such confusion, said Mekala, a resident of Thirumangalam.

To View our Latest Issue Log on to Weeds take over portion of pond at Tower Park By Our Correspondent Weeds have covered a vast portion of the beautiful pond located inside the Anna Nagar Tower Park (Dr Visveswaraya Park) worrying naturalists and regular visitors of the park. The pond with some marine life is one of the good attractions at the park and it is only the second such water body in the Anna Nagar and Mogappair neighbourhood that is situated inside a park maintained by the Greater Chennai Corporation the other one being the Mangal Eri Park in Mogappair East. These green weeds have covered the water completely and naturalists say that it needs to be removed immediately to prevent it from spreading to other areas of the pond. When we walk around the pond it is a relaxing experience because you can see the water lilies in bloom on areas of the water body. Occasionally we see turtles emerge from the pond and it also attracts some birds. But the weed that has covered an area of the pond has come as a dampener to our otherwise soothing experience, complains Sandeep Saxena, a resident of Anna Nagar and visitor to the park. Unless these weeds are removed immediately they have a tendency to spread fast. Also they will become difficult to remove if they are allowed to remain for a longer time. The whole purpose of having a water body is to see water and not weeds, adds Sandeep Saxena, who is also a nature lover. He gives the example of the Chetpet lake in the city. Some years ago before it was restored as an eco park the entire Chetpet lake was covered by invasive weeds and the authorities found it extremely difficult to de-weed and restore the lake, he points out. Park visitors like Ashraf Mohamed, a businessman, say that they hope that the Anna Nagar Tower Park s pond does not meet the same fate as some other water bodies in the city. If the weeds are not removed, we fear that it will also cover beneath it the accumulating silt. Weeds have to be periodically removed. Actually the Greater Chennai Corporation, which maintains this park, must engage people to regularly remove the weeds from the pond. That s the only way we can save this pond and ensure that its utility is maintained, says his friend and co-walker Viswanathan.

At some of the parks in the locality such as the Electricity Road Park and the Dr Visveswaraya Park (better known as Anna Nagar Tower Park), vendors selling gas balloons put up mobile stalls every evening as these parks attract hundreds of children on a daily basis. These vendors bring the gas cylinders with them to fill them in balloons. Pointing out that in the past there have been cases of accidental explosion of these gas cylinders including in Chennai causing injuries sometimes even fatal to those nearby, residents are calling for regulation. In recent memory, a gas balloon cylinder had exploded at a school and a boy died while another was critically injured. Training Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) information and training centre is organising a one day training programme Considering that hundreds of children virtually throng the parks there must be some regulation on the vendors of gas balloons. Of course children love these colourful gas balloons that are sold for Rs 10 or Rs 20 each. But the vendors may not be using the cylinders in the right manner and one cannot rule out an accidental explosion, argues Sumathi Ravi, a mother of a toddler who had come to the Anna Nagar Tower Park recently. This is summer vacation time and the number of children visiting the parks has also substantially increased. So all the more reason why the authorities should regulate gas balloon cylinders at these places now, she adds. Says Kalaiarasi, a resident of Mogappair East who visits the park maintained by the Greater Chennai Corporation on Electricity Board Road, Sometimes I have seen the vendor keeping the gas balloon cylinder in a slanting position. Usually at home we don t slant the LPG cylinder as advised by oil companies. In the case of gas balloon cylinders I don t know what the norm is but seeing the slanted cylinder did give me a fright. But vendors appeared confident. We are also aware of the need for safety. If there is an explosion even we will be injured.
