By Our Correspondent A lengthy stretch of the Fifth Avenue Road in Anna Nagar, which was dug up recently by contractors engaged by a civic agency, has been covered up with earth in a haphazard manner leaving road users fuming. On the stretch from the Blue Star end to the Sixth Avenue, the road was dug up in the middle of the left hand side stretch. The contractor has since completed the work and covered up the dug portion with earth. Ideally the contractor or the civic agency should have taken steps to relay the dug up portion with concrete road using blue metal. However, that has not been done, say motorists. As a result of this, motorists have lost valuable motorable space on the vital road that is used by hundreds of people living in the neighbourhood as well as visitors. Now the road resembles as if it is in two portions with the earth covered patch appearing to be the median. So mostly cars and other vehicles are parked on the extreme left of the road with very few using it for driving purpose. Many motorists use only the remaining portion of the road, said Shankar Raman, a local resident. Two wheeler riders also lament that they are finding it difficult to ride on the road ever since the stretch of dug up portion was not re-laid properly. Now they try to avoid the uneven surface there and instead drive only on the other side. Certainly this has reduced the space available for vehicles. Since very few motorists use the extreme left of the road as many vehicles are parked there, we are now forced to drive adjacent to the stretch that is covered by earth. Navigating on the road with other vehicles playing by the side is not easy, said Karan, a college student who rides a scooter from his home to campus and back on working days. Motorists are now appealing to the authorities concerned to at least take steps to immediately level the surface and cover it with concrete so that they could zip across the Fifth Avenue Road easily.

3 3 Velammal s Gukesh becomes world s 2nd & India s youngest GM By Julian Rodrigo Chess is one sport where India keeps producing young Grandmasters and agegroup World champions consistently. Meet D Gukesh, of Velammal Vidyalaya (Mel Ayanambakkam) who is the new kid on the block. He is on a roll. The 12-year-old not only became the second youngest Grand Master in the world but got all the attention for narrowly missing out on breaking Sergei Karjakin s world record of being the youngest GM. No other youngster has come so close to rewriting the 16-year-old record of the Russian, which itself is quite an achievement. He became the third Indian to become the second youngest to achieve that feat after Parimarjan Negi and R Praggnanandhaa another Velammallian. Gukesh s performance in India s capital city pushed Uzbekistan youngster Javokhir Sindarov to the third spot among youngest GMs. Incidentally, Sindarov had rewritten R Praggnanandhaa s record in October last year. As a matter of fact, Praggnanandhaa had captured the imagination of chess world in quest of breaking Karjakin s long-standing record even though he fell (L to R) Mr S Kailasanathan, CEO, Microsense, GM Elect D Gukesh, International Master Manuel Aaron, Mr D V Sundar, Vice President, FIDE & AICF. I am very impressed and happy with his achievement. I was really hoping that he would become the world s youngest GM. It s a pity that he missed it by just 17 days. Hopefully it will be a target for another rising star from India, lauded India No 4 Baskaran Adhiban on Gukesh s fantastic feat. Adhiban is also a Velammal product. Another India GM Sundararajan Kidambi echoed the same: Unprecedented achievement. When queried about his strengths? Adhiban had this to say: Already at a very young age he is quite mature and reserved. He is ready to listen and get knowledge from the experienced ones. He is also emotionally stable which is remarkable for his age. I feel working with sports mind coach Krishna Prasad is one of the main reasons for that. Very different player, opening-wise, I don t remember such a young player with repertoire consisting of closed games (Reti as white and Caro-Kann as black mainly). But he has shown a full- blooded fighting style, where he handles complications well too. Phenomenal talent, pointed out Kidambi on Gukesh s strong points. A seventh standard student of Velammal Vidyalaya, he says his school has supported him a lot whenever he had to miss classes to play in tournaments. Now that I have become a GM, I can play bigger tournaments and will get invitations to challenging events, he says. I want to improve my game and also achieve Super Grandmaster title, he added. The Velammal lad, who trains six to seven New Kid on the Block hours a day, said he likes to watch Tamil comedy scenes to relax. Gukesh had a memorable 2018, becoming an IM, besides winning the World U-12 title in emphatic fashion (10/11). Working with Vishnu Prasanna, who is one of India s strong GMs, has made him a better player without a doubt. The way he is progressing, Gukesh is bound to win more laurels for the country. But what happens when garbage bins themselves are discarded on the road? Well that s the question that is bogging some residents of Padikuppam off East but for which they do not have the answer. About half a dozen garbage bins, all of them partially damaged, have been discarded on the sides of the Padikuppam Burial ground Road at different points. Locals say that the huge dustbins, belonging to the agency engaged by the Greater Chennai Corporation to maintain cleanliness in the neighbourhood, have been lying abandoned on the road for many weeks now. And there is no sign of any responsible authority taking note of it at all, say the residents. These garbage bins, all made of metal as opposed to the commonly sighted green plastic bins, bear damages of varying degrees presumably due to regular wear and tear and rusting. Instead of recycling them or repairing them, the civic agency has simply dumped them on the roadside. What lesson is the Greater Chennai Corporation seeking to convey by such discarding of garbage bins on the roadside? Every now and then we have visits by workers of the Greater Chennai Corporation visiting our localities and giving us lectures on cleanliness and the need to dispose of wastes in a proper manner. This could be slightly away from the existing Metro Station though the exact location has not been finalised.
