While the notice board is largely used by an elderly gentleman to pen inspiring thoughts in English and Tamil on a daily basis as reported by Mogappair Mail more than a year ago park users are finding novel uses for it. The board serves as a corner for listing out lost and found items which is very useful for the park users, says Subramanian, a regular walker at the Mangal Eri Park. There are cases of people missing small items during their visit to the park and after a frantic search they leave. Recently a silver anklet had fallen off the ankles of a child and a park user found it. He wrote it down on the board with a contact numbers. Similarly, we have cases of people missing their scooter keys or home keys while on a walk. These are put up on the notice board along with a contact number so that when people come back to the park they can call the number and get it back, adds Subramanian. Some youngsters who visit the park also thought of an idea of using the board to communicate with their friends during the recent Aircel network failure. I and three of my classmates were supposed to meet at this park last month. I had an Aircel connection and my number was not reachable then due the breakdown in network. I had landed first at the park and was waiting for my friends but they did not turn up. I thought of leaving the place after writing a message on the black board conveying to my friends that I had come and waited for them as I could not call them over phone. I was just beginning to write the message when one of my classmates arrived and tapped me on the shoulder. So I rubbed off the message, claims Vasanthan, a student of an arts college in Anna Nagar and resident of Kavimani Street in Mogappair. People generally seemed appreciative of the idea. Mosque / New fence around pond vandalised in Anna Tower Park By Our Correspondent If the Mangal Eri Park s pond in Mogappair does not have a fence, it is an altogether different story at the expansive pond inside the premises of the Dr Visveswaraya Park popularly known as the Anna Tower Park in Anna Nagar. In the latter, miscreants have vandalised a new mesh fence laid around the pond. This is indeed an irony. The fence around this pond in the Anna Tower Park was damaged previously during the Cyclone Vardah that had struck Chennai over a year ago leaving behind a trail of destruction. Often adults take children for a walk around the pond s concrete course hoping to spot some interesting marine life like a turtle or even a water snake. We suspect that some youngsters who love to sit beyond the fenced area on the concrete portion of the pond with their girl friends must be cutting off the mesh fence using a pocket knife or something like that. Over time they will end up destroying the entire fence making it easy to access the concretised areas. This has to be kept under check, says Antony Merwin, an elderly person who comes to the park with his grandson in the evenings. So long as this fence is there, I can afford to allow my two year old grandson to run around on the footpath along the pond. But if the fence is vandalised at this rate, then I may not be able to bring him to the park to enjoy nature as he would risk running and tripping, he adds. Regular visitors say that the security guard posted at the park must regularly do the rounds around the park to prevent such vandalism.

Boy riding bike dies in accident, Mother booked A 16-year-old boy riding a high-end bike knocked a pedestrian to death on Ambattur Estate Road on Wednesday night. The boy died on Thursday. The police have registered a case against the teenager s mother. The minor boy was the son of a businessman in and was studying in a private school in Mogappair. On Wednesday evening, he left home on his bike and was riding rashly on the busy Ambattur Estate Road. He knocked a pedestrian, killing him on the spot. The boy then rammed a tree and fell down from the bike, sustaining severe injuries. He later succumbed to his injuries. The Thirumangalam Traffic Investigation wing registered a case against his mother Meena since she is the owner of the vehicle as per records.

By N Rathi Chithra Footpath only for pedestrian reads a banner put up by the Greater Chennai Corporation on a platform in Shanthi Colony in busy Anna Nagar close to the Bharat Petroleum company outlet. Ironically less than 20 metres away one can see a row of two-wheelers parked right on the elevated platforms either end of the same road. Being a busy road with high traffic density many cars are parked on the roadsides. Consequently two-wheeler riders who frequent the many shops in the vicinity use the elevated footpath to park their vehicles illegally and thereby denying pedestrians their rightful walking space. On many days during the evenings I have seen scooters and motorcycles parked right in front of this flex banner that cautions people that the footpath is meant only for walking. That s the irony of the whole scene here, laments Ramalingam, an elderly citizen and longtime resident of an apartment in Shanthi Colony. We pedestrians are left to fend for ourselves and walk on the road margins with great difficulty, he adds. Residents and pedestrians say it is very common to see rows of twowheelers parked on platforms in the locality. You can find motorcycles parked on the footpath just behind the No Parking signboard installed on the road front. And we have not seen any personnel of the Chennai City Traffic Police ever do the rounds here to check and crackdown on such illegal parking, says Meenakshi Venkataramanan, a resident of Shanthi Colony. Stepping out of our homes has become difficult. Why can t people simply realise the fact that pedestrians must be given their right due space on a city road? As it is small vendors occupy a portion of the platform and parking vehicles on the platforms only worsens the situation for us, she adds throwing up her hands in the air as a sign of frustration. Residents say that if the Chennai City Traffic Police crackdown on this practice at least once a week then it would serve as a deterrent for those indulging in such illegal parking. Once upon a time our locality was so quiet and peaceful. Now it has turned into a commercial hub and so we have to deal with this disgusting practice of parking on footpaths, says Ramjee, another resident.

7 April 8-14, Use of M-sand causes pollution, say residents By Our correspondent A cross-section of residents of the Mogappair neighbourhood is complaining about dust pollution caused by the use of M-sand (manufactured sand) in construction of buildings. Unlike the river sand the colour of the M- sand resembles that of cement. Due to a shortage of river sand, many builders including private civil engineering contractors have switched to the use of M- sand for constructing buildings housing homes and commercial establishments. In fact, even the state government is encouraging people to use M-sand for construction so as to overcome the shortage of natural river sand. However, a section of residents are complaining that the use of M-sand has led to pollution in and around the surroundings of the construction premises. Some of this could be because of use of substandard M- sand, which the government is now seeking check and regulate. The normal sand does not yield dust. However, experts say that the pollution can be contained if water is sprayed over the M-sand. If a small quantity of water is sprayed on the M- sand or if it is covered with a tarpaulin sheet flying of dust particles can be contained to a large extent, suggests V Jayaraman, a civil engineer.
