All earlier notes will continue to be legal tender. The dimensions of the new note will be 66 mm x 135 mm.while the height is the same as the new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 banknotes which were issued after demonetization, the width is lesser than the Rs 500 banknote. Resides the colour and the dimensions, a unique feature of the new banknote is the motif of Hampi with chariot and the Swachh Bharat logo with slogan on the reverse. The RBI on Friday disclosed the new-look Rs 50 note and provided details of the new security highlights. The announcement came after images of the new note started doing the rounds in social media. As we enter the 100th year of post-world war, is it not our moral responsibility to pay them tribute? But, unfortunately their sacrifices and efforts never got recognised says Murugesh Natarajan, a resident of Anna Nagar, who has been helping identify World War veterans and their widows and honouring them was cash aid during Independence Day and other national occasions. Elizabeth Mitradas Murugesh Natarajan When Mogappair Mail caught up with him recently to know about his initiatives to honour the world war veterans, he said, Government recognises only freedom fighters and those who participated in the wars after Independence. But the efforts and valour of 40 lakh Indians never got recognised. A few world war veterans are still alive and many widows of those veterans are also suffering now. It prompted me to honour them during Independence and Republic day. We identify them through an association called War Veterans welfare association which is in Saidapet. We got much information about the veterans and we get many contacts if we get to meet any one of the veterans or their widows. We invite them to the function and give them cash. I came to know about such veterans when I met Anthony Mithradoss in 2013, who was a prominent director who made successful films with yesteryear popular heroes such as PU Chinnappa and Thyagaraja Bhagavathar. He himself was a war veteran. He threw light on the various veterans. We both have been doing this work jointly till last February that is till he breathed last. When he died he was 103 years old, he was very active. He only guided me to do such services. I got many contacts of war veterans through him. His wife Elizabeth Mitradas is 95 years old and she came to our function last week, said Murugesh Natarajan. Many of the widows of the war veterans and a few veterans themselves are crying for attention. They don t get pension from the government. As the 100th year of World War will be in 2018, we have decided to spread this message all over the world and pay tributes to them, he said.

Officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited said the required boosters were installed and it would take a month for them to provide the service to commuters. The city got its first underground metro rail line between Nehru Park and Thirumangalam - a distance of about 8km - on May 14. Before the launch, officials had said it would take three months for them to provide mobile connectivity. But though the footfalls at underground metro stations has been increasing since its launch, lack of mobile network connectivity has been inconveniencing commuters. It takes about 20 minutes for a metro train to reach Thirumangalam from Nehru Park.

Near Narayana School & Saveetha Dental College A new lease of life for Paruthipattu lake After several years of representation from residents of Avadi, the Paruthipattu lake, a key water body in the western suburb, is set to get a new lease of life with the Water Resources Department commencing work to clean up the lake. According to sources, the lake spread across 87 acres will be converted into an eco tourism spot at an investment of Rs 28 crore. The Water Resources Department has now started to remove the thick vegetation that had taken over the lake due to neglect. Authorities hope to complete the work on the rejuvenation of the lake in about one year s time should everything go as per schedule and if delays are avoided due to any contract related issues that may crop up during execution of the massive restoration work. Once the vegetation that has overgrown is removed on the lake bed, then the contractors engaged by the Water Resources Department would begin to desilt the lake which would help deepen it or restore it to its original level making it a good water carrier. That s what residents and history fans who joined the Nam Veedu, Nam Oor, Nam Kadhai (Our House, Our Locality, Our Story) team led by Thirupurasundari Sevvel on a walk around Anna Nagar and Shenoy Nagar as part of the Madras Week celebrations (For your information Namma Chennai, nay Madras, has turned 378 this year), learnt. For the uninitiated in this neighbourhood, ages ago West Madras comprised the Aminjikarai Panchayat under which came the Aminjikarai, Naduvakkarai and Periya Kudal villages came. Well this may be hard to believe for those who now see Anna Nagar as a bustling locality under the Greater Chennai Corporation. Indeed the locality has come a long way from being part of a panchayat to a Municipal Corporation in a metro city. In the late 1940s, some parts of Aminjikarai were developed into a separate locality which is today s Shenoy Nagar area. Likewise in the 1950s, parts of Naduvakkarai village began to develop and became Anna Nagar, much before it was developed as a planned neighbourhood. Interestingly, all these areas were originally called West Madras Neighbourhood Plan. Only old timers would know that the Tamil Nadu Housing Board had developed Anna Nagar into a full-fledged sustainable residential neighbourhood in 1968 when the India International Trade and Industries Fair was held there. According to Thirupurasundari Sevvel, around 60 international stalls were put up at the venue then in which almost all countries participated. The Naduvakkarai-Anna Nagar historical walk, which started at the Anna Nagar Tower Park (Dr Viswesvaraya Park near Ayyappan Temple), went through Z Block, Kandasamy Naidu College (run by the Pachaiyappa s Trust) and the Anna Nagar Roundtana. Not many of the participants were aware that the wall mural painting put up for the India International Trade and Industries Fair is still intact near the Kandasamy Naidu College. Nam Veedu, Nam Oor, Nam Kadhai team s next historical walk on the occasion of the Madras Week celebrations will be held on August 26 from the Shenoy Nagar Metro Rail Station, the erstwhile Shenoy Nagar Park. According to Thirupurasundari, the locality was the first to get exhaust fans from the government under a then existing scheme. The neighbourhood s first State cooperative run supermarket was the Chintamani, which functions to this day. The Valliammal School (now the group has a women s college too) is the first school in the neighbourhood and the Kandasamy Naidu College is the first college in the area (now Anna Adarsh and other colleges are also there). What's more? This time the earliest organisers of the Madras Week celebrations have also unveiled a T-shirt that highlights the heritage and greatness of Madras, which was renamed Chennai in 1996 by the State Government in honour of its original name Chennapattinam. This year, the organisers said, the workers of the Chennai Metro Rail, most of whom are from migrant workers from Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Assam and some even from the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, have been honoured as part of the celebrations. And what better way to honour them than by getting to display photographs of these workers creating the greatest mobility infrastructure in the city? According to Vincent D Souza, one of the organisers, it is these workers too who contribute a significant part to the growth of the city as they build one of the biggest transport systems. "We have requested them permission to exhibit the pictures in stations. It is important to recognise their work," he said. A walk inside Fort St. George and at Chepauk stadium, which will be restricted entry and be based on registration has been organised. The city's historian S. Muthiah said the celebration of Madras Week had grown over the years with people celebrating not just its birthday but also the city's contribution to modern India.
