The accused Srinivasan lodged a police complaint that his wife Indrani (33) has committed suicide at their house in Maduravoyal by hanging. However when police questioned him about the injuries on her neck, Srinvasan confessed that he strangulated her and faked her suicide. Investigating officers said that the couple was childless, and he suspected her infidelity. Following his confession Police arrested Srinivasan. 3 By N Rathi Chithra 3 residents seek farm fresh mobile shop Residents living in the and Anna Nagar neighbourhood are seeking introduction of the Farm Fresh Consumer Mobile Shop Panai Pasumai Nugarvor Kadai in Tamil - in their localities so that they could purchase fruits and vegetables at affordable prices. Around five years ago, the Tamil Nadu Government through its Horticulture Department had launched two such Farm Fresh Consumer Mobile Shops mobile vans to sell fresh veggies and fruits in the city. These mobile shops passed through the neighbourhoods of Mylapore, Mandaveli, Kotturpuram, Thiruvanmiyur, Koyambedu, Vadapalani, Alwarthirunagar and Valasaravakkam. The sale price of the kitchen items are around 10 to 15 per cent lesser than the prevailing market prices and the products that are sold are comparatively fresh. However, the scheme has since not been expanded to other parts of the city. When the scheme was launched, I was eagerly looking forward to its extension and hoped that these mobile vans would also pass through the neighbourhood so that we can also buy fresh fruits and vegetables at reasonable cost. But to this day there is no announcement about it being launched anywhere else other that the initial designated places, said Kamala, a resident of sixth block in East, whose husband works as an auto rickshaw driver to earn a living. Such vans should be operated in areas like ours which have a mixed population. In south Chennai areas like Mylapore, Mandaveli and Kotturpuram it is largely the rich and well off who stay there. 6 6 Selling Nungu on the Thirumangalam-Ambattur Main Road By N Rathi Chithra The season of ice apples palm fruit (nungu in Tamil) has arrived to offer a cool solution for people to beat the sweltering heat in summer. In the and Anna Nagar neighbourhood it has now become an annual feature for vendors of ice apples to set up makeshift vending points along the Thirumangalam- Road especially from the Thirumangalam Junction up to the Park Road Junction. Along this road, these vendors can be found at a distance of every five metres. The vendors come from the neighbouring districts of Tiruvallur and Vellore. They can be spotted sitting with huge aluminium vessels containing the ice apples and covered with palm leaves to prevent air from going inside. All these vendors sell the palm kernels that have been carefully removed from the black shells of the palm fruit. Every day, we cut hundreds of palm fruits and remove the ice apples from the outer shell and load them on to the alu- Health Benefits Of Nungu Ice apple, also known as palm fruit or Nungu in Tamil is a delicious jelly like fruit that beats all the others for its cooling effect on a hot summer day. This seasonal nungu is the tender fruit of the palmyra tree. This tree is found in plenty in the villages of South India lining the paddy fields. It is the official tree of the Tamil Nadu State. The jelly part is cut to pieces and added to milk and honey. This preparation cools the body and helps tackle the hot summer. People suffering from chicken pox can take ice apple regularly to bring down the intensity of the disease condition as well as aid rapid healing. Eaten Fresh Best Nungu is best eaten fresh but it can also be soaked in coconut water and chilled for some time to enhance its natural coolness. Presently most of these vendors are selling a dozen ice apples for Rs 60 and sometimes they give some sugar is one way of eating it; another way is to make nungu payasam cooking the pieces in milk and sugar till it is soft and creamy. The flesh itself is almost bland and somewhat similar to the litchi in texture without the sweetness and is refreshing to eat. It is best eaten tender and fresh as soon as it is cut since it tends to become rubbery when stored and the sugar inside ferments changing its taste. The season is very short and the fruits usually appear in early summer. The fruit is packed with minerals especially phosphorus and calcium. It is extremely cooling for the body, contains B complex vitamins like thiamine and riboflavin and almost no fat or carbohydrates. It is often used in traditional therapy to cure stomach and skin disorders. Ice Apples season arrives 15 pieces for the same price upon bargaining. The price has gone up. House owners are extremely reluctant to rent out their premises to bachelors. Even spinsters and young girls face a similar problem in renting homes. Except for a few mansions and some ladies hostels that function in East and West, single men and women find it extremely difficult to find an accommodation in the neighbourhood. I was working in Bengaluru and recently moved in to Chennai after the Information Technology company, where I was working transferred me here. For the last two months I have been trying to find a decent place to stay but without success. Wherever I go, the owners refuse to give me a house on rent the moment they know that I am a bachelor. I don t know why we bachelors are viewed with suspicion despite working in a reputed company, asked Vikram Rathod, a 28-year-old software engineer. In fact, while searching for houses, I was surprised to find that one apartment - Mallihai Apartment in Eri Scheme Road had a board outside with several conditions including one that mentioned that the flats won t be rented out to bachelors, added Rathod.
