1 SIA Fall Tour, Madison and Southern Indiana, Oct. 5-8, 2014 This yearʼs Society for Industrial Archeology Fall Tour will explore historic and active manufacturing and engineering sites in and around Madison, Columbus and Seymour, IN. Process tours will include diesel engines, hand tools, printed plastic ware and egg grading and processing. Historic sites will include Madisonʼs downtown, which with more than 1600 contributing structures is the largest National Historic District in the US. Its Main Street remains largely intact with historic buildings. Madison is located on the Ohio River in southeastern Indiana. The town was founded in 1809 and platted in 1810, six years before Indiana became a state. Its location contributed to rapid growth in its first decades when the Ohio River was a major route to entry into the new state. Its early years saw major expansion of pork packing, flour milling, transshipment of products and brewing and distilling. In time, Madison declined as a pork packing and manufacturing center as transportation expanded to other areas in the state. Much of its historic structure remains intact. The town is recognized for its historic character and welcomes visitors throughout the year. This Fall Tour is undertaken with the support and co-sponsorship of Historic Madison, Inc. (HMI). John and Ann Windle founded HMI in The organization advocates for the preservation and thoughtful development of Madisonʼs historic district. The tour will visit both the Shrewsbury-Windle & the Ben Schroeder Saddletree Factory that are HMI properties. (see Note the tour is scheduled Sunday through Wednesday. This scheduling makes hotel availability better and facilitates scheduling process tours. The registration fee includes one day of tours on Monday, one day of tours on Tuesday, three breakfasts, two lunches and two evening meals. Madison, Indiana Early Madison is located along the river and below a tall limestone bluff. (See description for Madison above.) The 130 block historic district is available for exploring, as is the riverfront with views of the Ohio River and its barge traffic. Shrewsbury-Windle House Madison architect Francis Constigan constructed The Shrewsbury- Windle house for Captain Charles L. Shrewsbury in The Greek revival house includes a 53-step freestanding, self-supporting spiral staircase to span three floors. John and Ann Windle purchased the home in 1948 and were instrumental in preserving Madisonʼs historic district over the following decades. The home is now owned by Historic Madison, Inc. and has recently undergone substantial renovation. It is a National Historic Landmark. The Livery Stable The Livery Stable is a few blocks from the Shrewbury-Windle House. It is event facility for The Broadway Hotel and Tavern that traces its history to its establishment in Monday, October 6 Tour One In and around Madison Clifty Creek Power Plant - Clifty Creek Power Plant is a 1.3 GW coal fired plant that began generating electricity in It was originally built to provide power for the Atomic Energy Commissionʼs gaseous diffusion plant for uranium enrichment in Piketon, Ohio. In 2013, Clifty Creek completed a major renovation including installation of mechanical and chemical sulfur scrubbers. Jefferson County Historical Society/Madison Railroad Incline The Madison, Indianapolis & Lafayette Railroad began construction in 1836 as the first railroad in Indiana.
