1 Attractions The Big Apple Fun Center is Kearney s Largest Family Entertainment facility. All your recreational needs can be filled in one stop here at the Big Apple. Shuffle Board - We also have a shuffle board table for your entertainment. Cottonmill Park and Lake offers various opportunities for fun and recreational activities just west of Kearney. Visitors can hike in a native prairie or tour a Nature Barn. A central feature to the park is the 43 acre lake. The lake underwent a complete restoration in 1998 to create a top quality fishing lake. Swimming is allowed from sunrise to sunset with no lifeguard on duty. If boating and fishing is more to your liking, the lake is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, channel fish and northern pike. The more athletic visitors can play disc (Frisbee) golf on the east side of the park. The 2,263 foot, par 33 course meanders through cedar forest areas and along the lake shore. Visitors can picnic at any of the scattered picnic sites throughout the park. Small shelters, grills and water are available at some sites. The two large groups shelters, which can accommodate up to 48 people, a lodge, which will hold around 80 people and the amphitheater, which holds around 250 people, may be reserved. Classic Car Collection This is the best public car attraction between Chicago and Denver that includes more than 1 vintage automobiles from the early 1900 s to the 1980 s. The attraction includes video and multi-media displays throughout. The entire Collection will be photographed inside and out and be displayed on a multimedia show on ipads. Visitors will be able to read the story of each automobile as they tour the attraction. The Collection is housed in a 50,000 sq. ft. space in the Kearney Cabela s building. 2 Fort Kearny State Historical Park Buffalo County Fairgrounds Fort Kearny was an oasis during a hard journey for thousands of pioneer wagon trains. Be an eyewitness to the story by walking through the interpretive center, the blacksmith-carpenter shop, powder magazine and split stockade. Open 9am-5pm. The main arena will be a 0 x 175 (52,500 square feet) concrete arena with bleachers that can be pushed in our pulled out at your preference. The dirt arena will be a 180 x 110 (28,600 square feet) arena with a dirt floor. Portable bleachers can be placed on the cement concourse if needed. This building will also contain office space and a meeting room to serve as your event headquarters. Our sound system in this building is being custom built to fulfill the needs of the many events that use our facilities. We feel that this building will give a lot of new options for your event! The Outdoor Skills and Youth Development Facility offers a variety of shooting sports entertainment that includes trap, skeet, sporting clays and 5-stand. Call or Fort Kearny State Recreation Area Fort Kearny State Recreation Area offers 186 acres dotted with sandpit lakes. In the spring, the world s largest concentration of sandhill cranes and waterfowl gathers in the central Platte River Valley. Facilities include electrical and primitive camp pads, showers, dump station, modern restrooms, water, picnic tables, grills, shelters, wheelchair accessible fishing pier, nature trail, non-power boating and hike-bike trail. It features hand-carved oak and one of the largest Tiffany windows installed in a residence. Enjoy spectacular interactive exhibits of pioneers, wagon, trains, stampeding buffalo and much more that followed the Great Platte River Road. A tour through the Archway gives guests an appreciation for the importance of the Kearney area in the history of the overland trails, being the location where the Oregon, Mormon and California Trails converged and moved West. Completed in June of 2000, the non-profit museum prominently spans I-80 in Kearney. The Archway was envisioned and founded by the late Nebraska Governor Frank Morrison. They stop along the Platte to rest and gain body fat for a month as they prepare for their journey. Fossils of wing bones dating back nine million years have been discovered in Nebraska. 5 Rowe Sanctuary & Iain Nicolson Audobon Center Kearney Map The Iain Nicolson Audobon Center was constructed on the sanctuary in 2002 and serves as a visitor/education center. A straw bale structure, one of the largest in the United States, is a prime example of using a renewable resource and recycling. With the Platte River channel just out the back door, visitors get great panoramic views that are seldom seen anymore along the river. The center has a gift shop with interpretive displays and two walking trails that start from the building. Thousands of area students visit throughout the year for nature programming conducted on site. The center s unique location and natural materials make the building a unique, private and serene location for board meetings or special events accommodating up to 100 people. Displays include a Union Pacific steam engine, an authentic depot, church, Freighters Hotel and a school house, along with archives of the area. The park is still under construction, but many features are open to the public including: The John & Carmen Gottschalk Observatory Tower that stands 80 feet high providing an inspirational view; the Ron & Carol Cope Amphitheater that host area productions and performances; the 12-acre lake that is stocked with fish and attracts migrating waterfowl; the Mitzi Pavilion, which is able to hold around 50 people and around 250 people in the courtyard, and the Environment Resource Center, which is able to hold 75 people and is used for air-conditioned or heated meetings in a building full of windows near the lake.
