4 3 TRAVEL INFORMATION As you travel between different hotels, and you will have to handle your own baggage, please try to travel reasonably light. You should be able to lift and carry your own luggage. At some hotels, the coach may have to stop some distance short of the hotel entrance. Also, within some of the hotels there may be some long walks between the rooms and lobby area, which may include steps. Due to baggage restrictions on flights within Peru, your luggage should be kept to a maximum of 20kg (44lbs) Here you will find some information related to Peru. If you do not find the answer to your specific question, please contact us directly. PASSPORT Your passport is often required when checking into hotels and when changing money, so carry it with you on these occasions. It is also an excellent idea to memorise your passport number for the form filling. It is a good idea to carry photocopies of the personal details pages of your passport. Should you lose your passport, this may assist with the issue of replacement documents in your embassy. CURRENCY The currency in Peru is the Nuevo Sol. The Peruvian Sol not widely available outside Peru US$ cash is easiest to change. It is also a good idea to have some US$ cash for emergencies. However, it is now possible to rely on ATM machines (offering Sols or US Dollars) which exist in all the major cities we visit. Most of our hotels accept credit cards some of then with a extra charge of 5% CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT We recommend that you to pack your clothing and equipment in a strong suitcase or holdall and take a small rucksack to carry those items you will need during the day. We also recommend you take a waterproof jacket, trousers, some long-sleeved shirts, warm fleece together with thin jumpers, woollen socks, shorts and lighter summer clothes, swimwear and a towel. The secret, by the way, is layering. Peel off during the warm day, and layer on for cool nights. Here some examples on what you can bring with you. If you visit the Jungle Sandals with straps (You ll be given rubber boots at the lodge.). Comfortable walking shoes/hiking boots (nothing that you wouldn t want to get muddy!) Loose long-sleeved tops and long pants. Hat with netting. Poncho. Insect repellent. Flashlight. If you visit Machu Picchu Hiking boots. Fleece. Poncho (December through February). In you take the Inca Trail Sleeping bag (you can also rent one in Cusco). Headlamp. Comfortable hiking shoes. Documents: Bring your passport. These documents will be requested at the entrance to the Inca Trail so make sure to carry them with you in order to avoid any problems. The voltage in Peru is 220V. Some of your electronics may be able to take up to 220V; just look at the label on the charger. If not, you might want to carry an adapter/converter with you. There is no electricity in the Jungle lodges after eight or ten o clock each night when they turn off the generator.

5 TRAVEL INFORMATION 4 HEALTH & FITNESS Drinking or cleaning teeth in unboiled water is not recommended. Drinking only bottled water is a good idea. You'll find many brands in supermarkets or in little stores called bodegas. Common brands are Cielo, San Antonio, San Luis, and Fresh (lemon infused water). There are two types of water you can buy: sin gas meaning un-carbonated, normal water, and con gas which is carbonated. Important note: Peruvian tap water is not potable, should not be ingested directly from the tap. Be careful with what you eat to avoid upset stomachs and stay away from unpeeled fruit, salads and do not have ice in your drinks. Hot, fresh cooked food, where possible, is best. You should also be aware of issues associated with travelling at high altitudes. The lower atmospheric pressure at higher altitudes results in less oxygen finding its way into the blood. Problems usually start for most people at around 2,500 to 3,000 metres. If you reach this altitude gradually the body can accustom itself to having less oxygen, and you are less likely to have problems. It is important on arrival at destinations at this kind of altitude to rest for a few hours and not to over-exert yourself in the first day or two, as over-exertion can make altitude problems more likely. Local people also swear by coca leaf tea, which you will probably be offered on arrival, as a means of preventing or treating altitude problems. It is harmless and if you drink plenty of it, it will at least help you to avoid dehydration, something else that makes altitude problems more likely, so drink plenty of fluids (not alcohol!) at these high altitude destinations. Anybody who has a medical condition affecting blood circulation or breathing or has any other worries should consult their doctor before departure. Note: Bathrooms in Peru often have the telltale stick figures on the door. If they do not, look for Damas or Mujeres for women, and Caballeros or Hombres for men. Also, SS.HH indicates a restroom. You may sometimes be asked a pay a small charge for using public restrooms. PERSONAL SAFETY Please take sensible precautions like leaving your credit cards and passport in the hotel safe and avoiding displays of wealth such as wearing expensive jewellery or watches. Do not carry more cash on you than you need for each day. RAINY SEASON IN THE HIGH LANDS AND THE JUNGLE: The rainy season in Peru starts in December and continues until March. On the coast, the weather is arid with a warm summer from late December through March. A mist known as garúa covers the central and southern coastal provinces for the majority of the rest of the year. During the dry season it will be warm in the jungle, while it may be hot during the day and very cold at night in the other high regions such as Cusco, Arequipa, and Puno. Lima, Nazca, and Paracas are in between the two

35 34 PUNO & LAKE TITICACA Puno city is mostly the unlovely city on the altiplano, it is a high, wind - cold plateau. It has one thing going for it that no other place on earth can claim: The Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable body of water, located at 3,830m (12,566 ft.) above sea level. Lake Titicaca is also for many Peruvians a mystical and sacred place. The legend said that Manco Cápac, the original Inca chieftain has risen from the lake's waters along with his sister Mama Ocllo to found the Inca Empire. Lake Titicaca is the long-time home of highland cultures steeped in the old ways and for this reason almost everyone hops aboard a boat to visit at least one of several ancient islands. A full day tour or a 2-days tour takes travellers to the Uros Floating Islands, where Indian communities consisting of just a few families construct tiny islands out of totora reeds and to the two inhabited natural islands, Amantaní and Taquile. A special bonus, for travellers who have the time to do it!

Amantani island is located 26 miles (38 Km) away from the city of Puno (3 ½ hours of navigation in normal boat). Because of a more distant location, tourism on the island of Amantani has not developed in the same way as in Taquile island. The main difference is that home-stays have remained a more authentic cultural experience in Amantani. A visit to Amantani necessarily implies to stay one night on the island. The houses are very simple and services are basic. For many people this home-stay experience and the encounter with the host family is a revelation of the reality of Andean people at such altitude. This cultural exchange experience in Amantani is very touching and fascinating. We have called this tour CULTURAL because every traveler is welcome to share with the locals their time, some artistic gift, educational activities or just conversations. Fundo Chincheros. Soft hiking and relaxing countryside lunch in an old hacienda. Enjoy an authentic rural tourism experience only 8 kilometers from the city of Puno. Fundo Chincheros is a beautiful farm only 15 minutes away from the city of Puno. Pikillaqta stands as a massive set of stone structures concentrated on a hill overlooking the beautiful lagoon of Lucre. 41 40 Options of alternatives hikes around Cusco Inca Trail 2d /1n The trek starts at Km104 (104 kilometers along the railway from Cusco) and involves a four hour walk uphill to Wiñay Wayna and a couple of hours further to Machu Picchu making it ideal for trekkers wanting to experience at least a part of the Inca Trail but haven't got the time (or energy) to complete the full 4 day trek. According to new Peru regulations, you must employ the services of a professional guide or trek as part of an organized tour group. INKA TRAIL 4D /3N The trek is rated moderate and any reasonably fit person should be able to cover the route. It is fairly challenging nevertheless, and altitudes of 4200m are reached, so ensuring that you are well acclimatized is important. If arriving from sea level, plan to spend at least 2 full days in Cusco (3 days is better) prior to commencing the trek. This should allow plenty of time for acclimatization Andean Lodges Apu Ausangate Trek: This Trek is high recommended for visitors that want something more then a hike experience. It takes place in the surroundings of the APU AUSANGATE. In the Andean worldview, the Apu is the Mountain Spirit which life depends upon, in the Andes. With its 6,372 m. above sea level, the Apu Ausangate is one of the highest mountains in Southern Peru, and is considered as Cusco s Regional Tutelary Divinity. Andean Lodges Tour Operator offers you an unforgettable life changing experience while hiking around the Apu Ausangate. In this trek you will enjoy the amazing Andean landscapes and have chance to cultural interchange with native communities that also work as partners on this trek, offering their products and services, thus contributing to their own culture s sustainable development and protection. Hiking at an altitude of over 4,000 m. above sea level, demands lots of energy. Therefore, thinking about the hikers good rest, the

42 41 thinking about the hikers good rest, the Tour Operator has built four comfortable mountain lodges, along the route. Every lodge offers different and exceptional views of the Apu Ausangate, and all of them were built according to ecological criteria, in harmony with their natural surroundings, as well as with the local architectural style and culture s aesthetics. Choquequirao Trek Hike from 4 to 5 days Choquequirao means "cradle of gold" in Quechua although this is probably not its original Inca name. It is another "lost city of the Incas" located high on a ridge spur almost 1750m above the raging glacier-fed Apurimac River and surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks. The US explorer Gary Ziegler suggests that Choquequirao may have been the place where the last Inca, Tupac Amaru, was raised among Inca Priestesses. The abundance of many double jamb doorways and niches indicates that the place was held in high status. Trek Salkantay - Santa Teresa - Machu Picchu Hikes from 4 to 6 days This trek is often referred as the "alternative Inca Trail". Although many guide books and travel agencies often describe this route as "the-road-less-travelled" or a great trek to "get away from the crowds" this can be misleading. There is currently no control over the maximum number of trekkers so during the peak season (June - September) there can sometimes be more trekkers than the Classic Inca Trail and each year it is becoming more popular especially with Latin American visitors
