1 Traditional Textiles of Peru T Cresside Collette July 2018 An exciting study tour with Tapestry Artist Cresside Collette, designed for hand weavers, dyers and textile artists to discover the colourful history and practice of these traditional arts in the visually spectacular country of Peru. Highlights will include visits to Maximo Laura s Tapestry Studio and Museum to appreciate his exciting Contemporary tapestries, and the Amano Textile Museum in Lima to examine pre- Columbian textiles. Our group will participate in many hands-on workshops to experience the methods used to create beautiful woven pieces on back strap looms, learn to weave ticllas of discontinuous warp and weft, and study traditional Taquile clothing, as well as wool gathering, spinning and dyeing processes. Adding to the enjoyment will be escorted tours through breathtaking scenery to some of the most famous historical sites in South America Machu Picchu, The Sacred Valley, Lake Titicaca and the Colca Canyon. The towns of Cusco, Pisac, Puno, and Arequipa are enlivened by Quechan, Incan and Spanish history with their picturesque architecture and sacred pre-columbian sites and artefacts. And markets in charming locations en route offer up a wonderful array of traditional crafts in textiles, leather, ceramics, wood carving and basketware. 1

2 Day 1 Sunday 15 th July Lima Lima is situated in the coastal desert district between the Pacific Ocean and the western hills of the Andes. The tour group will meet in Lima in time for a welcome dinner with your guides at the Dama Juana Restaurant Accommodation: Arawi Miraflores Hotel. Day 2 Monday 16 th July Lima Half day City Tour of Colonial & Modern Lima. The tour begins with a drive to historic downtown Lima, also known as the City of the Kings, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Stops include the Main Square of Lima, the Government Palace, the Cathedral, the Archbishop s Palace, the City Hall and a visit to the Santo Domingo Convent. The modern district of San Isidro contains Huaca Huallamarca, a pre Incan pyramid made out of adobe. Then on to Miraflores, with a stop at the Parque del Amor to see its incredible view of the Pacific Ocean. Afternoon visit to the Larco Herrera Museum to see ceramics, pottery, gold and silver artefacts, and Paracas textiles. Day 3 Tuesday 17 th July Lima Visit to The Amano Textile Museum, internationally renowned for its great collection of archaeological material from pre-columbian Peruvian cultures. Founded in 1964 the Amano Museum, one of the first purpose-built museums in Peru, has a stunning collection of early Peruvian textiles sourced from Inca Tombs. Afternoon visit to the Maximo Laura Tapestry Studio, Lima. Maximo Laura is a world renowned textile artist who was awarded the honour of Amauta (Grand Master) and National Human Treasure by the Peruvian government. In 2013, he founded the Museo Maximo Laura in Cuzco. A special studio visit by arrangement. 2

3 Day 4 Wednesday 18 th July Lima - Cusco Flight to Cusco from Lima. Cusco was the capital of the Inca empire from the 11th to the early 16th century. Standing at 3310 metres above sea level, Cusco has around 280,000 inhabitants, mostly descendants of the Quechua tribes. The city is remarkable for its many colonial churches, monasteries, convents, and for its extensive Inca ruins. The heart of the city is the Plaza de Armas, surrounded by colonial arcades and four churches. Accommodation: Costa del Sol Ramada Cusco Hotel. Alabanza a la Fertilida, courtesy Maximo Laura Day 5 Thursday 19 th July Cusco Morning visit to Centro de Textiles Tradicionales del Cusco, a non-profit organisation that was established in 1996 by Andean weavers and their supporters. The mission of the Centre is to aid in the survival of Cusqueñan textile traditions and to provide support to the indigenous people who create them. The Centre works with ten weaving communities in the Cusco region of Peru on a fair-trade basis to help rescue traditions and promote the weavers and their work through community projects, workshops, and educational opportunities. 4 Day 6 Friday 20 th July Cusco - Machu Picchu - Sacred Valley We will be met by our driver at our hotel foyer, and transferred to Ollantaytambo railway station for our rail journey to Machu Picchu. Full day Machu Picchu tour with an expert guide and lunch at Sanctuary Lodge. Overnight accommodation at: Taypikala Valle Sagrado hotel Annotation Pane Day 7 Saturday 21 st July Ollantaytambo Chinchero A visit to the Away Weaving Association in Chinchero, a community located 45 minutes outside Cusco, home to the original group of weavers who started the Cusco Traditional Textile Centre. Workshop in spinning, dyeing and weaving. The weavers will demonstrate how to warp, weave and finish with the unique ñawi awapa border technique, followed by a typical lunch in a weaver s house. Afternoon tour of the town of Ollantaytambo to see its imposing Inca fortress - the huge monoliths that form the Temple of the Sun - and the valley view. 4

5 Day 8 Sunday 22 nd July Pisac Cusco Nestled in the Sacred Valley of the Incas is the small town of Pisac. We will visit its colourful market where local artisans sell their wares including alpaca clothing and accessories, silver jewellery and pottery. We will then continue our journey back to Cusco. A half day tour of the city that is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site includes the Main Square, the Sacsayhuaman Fortress, the church of Santo Domingo, and the three archaeological sites of Oenko, Puca-Pucara, and Tambomachay which were important religious and administrative centres for the Incas. Accommodation: Costa del Sol Ramada Cusco Hotel. Day 9 Monday 23 rd July Cusco Pitumarca Puno Overland journey to Puno, visiting interesting communities and ruins along the way. Our first stop is at Pitumarca Textile Centre, internationally known for their revival of the ticlla, or discontinuous warp and weft technique in which weavers can change the color of their warp thread anywhere they desire by inserting sticks into their warp. This technique was invented by pre-columbian cultures and was particularly important to the Paracas and Nazca. It is a weaving technique that is unique to pre- Columbian, Andean societies. 6 Puno We will then continue to Puno that lies on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. Puno was the territory of the Tiahuanacos (800 A.D A.D.) who were the highest cultural expression of the Aymara people that established themselves in what forms Peru and Bolivia today. The Incas took over these lands in the fifteenth century, and the Spanish (attracted by the mining industry developed there) left an important Colonial legacy throughout the entire area. Accommodation: Casa Andina Premium Collection Puno. Day 10 Tuesday 24 th July Puno Taquile Island A full day Uros & Taquile Island tour with a traditional lunch and Textile Session. UNESCO has declared the textile art of Taquile Island as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. About 35 kilometers away from Puno and 3950 metres above sea level, the culture dates back to Pre-Incan times. The islanders still live according to the traditions and beliefs of their ancestors and are world renowned for their lovely outfits and incredible textiles. The community of Huayllano will show you their art, craft, and farming activities that include dyeing, spinning, knitting and loom weaving and explain the symbolism contained in their garment designs. These incorporate agricultural cycles, rituals and events of personal or communal life - an important element in the oral tradition of the taquileños. After lunch we sail to the Uros Islands, a set of man-made floating islands in the middle of the Lake Titicaca National Reserve to meet the islanders - hunters and gatherers - and descendants of the first altiplano inhabitants, who still live on totora reed platforms. 6

7 Day 11 Wednesday 25 th July Puno Colca Canyon Leaving PUNO we will be driven through the amazing scenery of the highlands with a stop in Lagunillas for taking pictures of the wildlife. Then to Patahuasi, a refreshment stop for drinking the typical coca leaf tea. The journey will end at the hot springs town of Chivay. Accommodation: Colca Lodge Day 12 Thursday 26 th July Puno Colca Canyon Early morning visit to the "Condor Cross", the best vantage point for a breathtaking view of the Colca Canyon. If the weather allows, we will have the chance to witness the majestic flight of the Condor. Then a visit to the Hanging Tombs at Choquetico before continuing on to the towns of Maca, Achoma and Yanque with its lovely white church. Lunch in Chivay, then travel to Arequipa via Patapampa "Volcanoes Lookout". En route, we will go through the Aguada Blanca National Reserve where herds of llamas and alpacas graze on the plains. 8 Day 13 Friday 27 th July Arequipa A half day City Tour of Arequipa. A sightseeing tour of Arequipa including the Main Square, one of the most beautiful squares in Peru, and the Cathedral, a prime example of XIXth century Peruvian architecture that houses beautiful treasures in gold and silver. We will also visit the La Compañia Church, an ancient Jesuit temple with a distinctively carved façade. Afternoon visit to the Alpaca Museum. This interesting and unique Museum of Textile Machinery traces the origins of the world's alpaca industry, exhibiting interesting machines dating from the early years of the past century. The industrial processing of alpaca fibre is explained, from sorting to the finished product, encompassing more than a century of history. Farewell dinner at the Wyarana Restaurant. Day 14 Saturday 28 th July Arequipa Lima Flight back to Lima, end of tour. 8
