1 10TH BINATIONAL HEALTH WEEK Final Report

2 This year, the Binational Health Week (BHW) reached a 10 year milestone. For ten consecutive years federal and state government agencies, community-based organizations and thousands of volunteers have come together annually to help improve the health awareness and well-being of the underserved Latino population. To date, BHW is one of the largest mobilization efforts in the nation aimed to improve health access of vulnerable communities. Forty states in the United States and three Canadian provinces delivered health promotion and health education activities through workshops, health fairs and medical screenings to the most vulnerable populations. The objective is to promote awareness, prevention and response action regarding various health issues. National campaign topics for the 2010 edition were: Prevention of addictions and Gang Involvement among Adolescents; oral health; obesity and diabetes; disabilities and autism awareness and access to health care. At the national level, in 2009, an estimated 5,082 activities were held benefiting 765,901 people, involving the participation of 10,875 agencies and 17,044 volunteers. In Washington, more than 4,550 people attended the different events organized throughout the state. Page 2

3 Consulado de México en Seattle BHW 2010 Final Report The Seattle Task Force/Organization Committee was integrated this year by: Sea Mar Community Health Centers, Washington Association of Community and Migrant Health Centers (WACMHC), Northwest Regional Primary Care Association (NWRPCA), Seattle Children s Hospital, Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital y Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic. Seattle Children s Hospital and Molina Healthcare sponsored the activities held during this tenth edition of the BHW in Washington. The opening event took place on October 5th at South Seattle Community College along with the celebration of the 5th Annual Latino Health Forum, organized by Sea Mar Community Health Carolina Lucero, Senior Vice President, Sea Centers. The key note address was given by Epifanio Elizondo Ph.D PA-C, Regional Health Administrator, Region VI, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. His message, entitled The Status of Latino Health The Federal Perspective, served as framework for several concurrent sessions on various topics highlighted by the national campaign. Page 3

14 Several events took place also on the Eastern side of state, thanks to the invaluable efforts of hundreds of volunteers. Josefino Martinez, Triqui Culture Specialist at First Baptis Church of Quincy In the Yakima are there was several events organized by the Promotoras de Salud, Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital and Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic. The community had the opportunity to participate in several workshops called Tomando el control de su salud ; breast cancer early screenings and diabetes early screenings. There was 2 radio programs focusing on cancer and obesity and 4 spots transmitted in Univision Yakima. Page 14

Besides the presentation of preliminary results of the BHW, it was the occassion to specially acknowledge the first time participation of the Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic. Page 19
