14 Soil Descriptions Abrazo Series fine, mixed, mesic Aridic Argiustolls (Mollisol). These moderately deep, well drained slowly permeable soils formed in alluvium and colluvium derived mainly from tuff. They are on hills and mountains. Typical pedon of an Abrazo gravelly sandy loam in an area of Abrazo-Motoqua, cool-rock outcrop complex, 10 to 50% slopes Berino Series- fine-loamy, mixed, thermic Typic Haplargids (Aridisol). These deep well drained, moderately permeable soils formed in alluvial and eolian material. They are on Bajadas, plains, and broad fan terraces. Slopes are 1 to 5%. Typical pedon of a Berino fine sand in an area of Berino-Dona Ana association. Bluepoint Series mixed, thermic Typic Torripsamments (Entisol). These deep, excessively drained, rapidly permeable soils formed in alluvial and eolian material. They are on alluvial fans, plains, and terraces. Typical pedon of Bluepoint loamy fine sand, 1 to 9% slopes Brazito Series mixed, thermic Typic Torripsamments (Entisol). These deep, well drained, rapidly permeable soils formed in recent alluvium. They are in the Rio Grande floodplain. Slope is 0 to 1%. Typical pedon of Brazito fine sandy loam, 0 to 1% slopes; about 3 miles south of San Antonio on the Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. Cascajo Series sandy-skeletal, mixed, mexic Ustollic Calciothids (Aridisols). These deep, excessively drained, rapidly permeable soils formed in gravelly alluvium. They are on hills and knolls. Slope is 15 to 30%. Typical pedon of Cascajo very gravelly sandy loam, 15 to 305 slopes; about 37 miles northwest of Magdalena. Datil Series fine-loamy, mixed, mesic Aridic Argiustolls (Mollisols). These deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils formed in alluvium. They are on fan terraces, bajadas, and dissected hills and ridges. Slope is 3 to 25%. Typical pedon of a Datil loam in an area of Loarc-Datil-Majada association, 20 to 12% slopes; about 15 miles west and 28 miles north of Magdalena. Dona Ana Series fine-loamy, mixed, thermic Typic Haplargids (Aridisols). These deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils formed in alluvial and eolian material. They are on fan terraces, plains, and bajadas. Slope is 1 to 5%. Typical pedon of a Dona Ana sandy loam in an area of Berino-Dona Ana association about 12 miles east of San Antonio Glenberg Series coarse-loamy, mixed (calcareous), mesic Ustic Torrifluvents (Entisols). These deep, well drained, moderately rapidly permeable soils formed in recent alluvium. They are on flood plains and in drainageways. Slope is 0 to 5%. Typical pedon of a Glenberg sandy loam in an area of Glenberg - Riverwash association, about 25 miles northwest of Magdalena. Glendale Series fine-silty, mixed (calcareous), thermic Typic Torrifluvents (Entisols). These deep, well drained, moderately slowly permeable soils formed in recent alluvium. 15 La Fonda Series fine-loamy, mixed, mesic Ustollic Camborthids (Aridisols). These deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils formed in alluvium derived mainly from sedimentary rock and eolian material. They are on fan terraces and in swales and drainageways. Slope is 1 to 9%. Typical pedon of a La Fonda fine sandy loam in an area of Harvey-La Fonda Association; about 6 miles south of Claunch. Loarc Series fine-loamy, mixed, mesic Aridic Argiustolls (Mollisols). These deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils formed in alluvial and eolian material. They are on fan terraces. Slope is 1 to 12%. Typical pedon of Loarc loamy sand about 12 miles west of Magdalena. Manzano Series fine-loamy, mixed, mesic Cumulic Haplustolls (Mollisols). These deep, well drained, moderately slowly permeable soils formed in recent alluvium. They are in drainageways and swales. Slope is 1 to 3%. Typical pedon of Manzano silt loam, about 6 miles southeast of the National Radio Astronomy Laboratory Headquarters. Nickel Series loamy-skeletal, mixed, thermic Typic Calciorthids (Aridisols). These deep, well drained, moderately slowly permeable soils formed in gravelly alluvial deposits derived mainly from rhyolitic tuff and lava. They are on bajadas. Slope is 1 to 25%. Typical pedon of a Nickel very gravelly sandy loam in an area of Nickel-Caliza very gravelly sandy laoms; about 15 miles southwest of San Marcial. Thunderbird Series fine, monmorillonitic, mesic Aridic Argiustolls (Mollisols). These moderately deep, well drained, slowly permeable soils formed in alluvium derived mainly from basalt. They are on plains of basalt-capped mesas. Slope is 1 to 10%. Typical pedon of Thunderbird gravelly loam, about 20 miles northeast of Datil on Wiley Mesa. Turney Series fine-loamy, mixed, thermic Typic Calciothid (Aridisols). These deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils formed in alluvial and eolian material. They are on bajadas and plains. Slope is 1 to 5%. Typical pedon of Turney loam, 6 miles east and 24 miles south of San Antonio. Aridic Argiustolls shallow to deep, well drained soils on truncated side slopes of old alluvial fan terraces on hills and mesas. These soils formed in mixed alluvium and colluvium over basalt or cemented conglomerate. Slope is 35 to 95%. Sample pedon of Aridic Argiustolls in an area of Aridic Argiustolls- Goldust association, extremely steep, about 18 miles west of Truth or Consequences. Aridic Haplustalfs shallow to moderately deep, well drained soils on hillsides and mountainsides. These soils formed in colluvium derived from mixed igneous rock. Slope is 15 to 95%. Sample pedon of Aridic Haplustalfs in an area of Aridic Haplustalfs-Rock outcrop complex, about 9 miles northeast of Winston. Arizo Series Typic Torriorthents (Entisols), sandy-skeletal, mixed, thermic. These deep, excessively drained soils formed in mixed alluvium. They are on alluvial fans, flood plains, and small valley floors. Slope is 0 to 3%. Typical pedon of Arizo very gravelly sandy loam in an area of Arizo and Canutio soils, 10 miles northwest of Truth or Consequences. Berino Series Typic Haplargids (Aridisols), fine-loamy, mixed, thermic. These deep, well drained soils formed in mixed alluvium. They are on piedmonts. Slope is 1 to 7%. 16 Bluepoint Series Typic Torripsamments (Entisols), mixed, thermic. These deep, somewhat excessively drained soils formed in sandy mixed alluvium that has been modified by wind. They are on piedmonts, alluvial fans, and terraces. Slope is 1 to 15%. Typical pedon of Bluepoint loamy fine sand, about 2 miles southwest of Truth or Consequences. Cabezon Series Lithic Argiustolls (Mollisols), clayey, montmorillonitic, mesic. These shallow, well drained soils formed in residuum and eolian material derived dominantly from basalt on lava flows. Slope is 1 to 15%. Typical pedon of Cabezon gravelly clay loam in an area of Thunderbird-Cabezon association, about 5 miles east and 4.5 miles north of Hermosa. Dona Ana Series Typic Haplargids (Aridisols), fine-loamy, mixed thermic. These deep, well drained soils formed in mixed alluvium. They are on piedmonts. Slope is 1 to 9%. Typical pedon of Dona Ana very fine sandy loam in an area of Dona Ana-Tres Hermanos association, about 20 miles east of Arrey. Eba Series Typic Haplargids (Aridisols), clayey-skeletal, mixed, thermic. These deep, well drained soils formed in gravelly mixed alluvium. They are on piedmonts. Slope is 1 to 7%. Typical pedon of Eba very gravelly loam, about 18 miles of Truth or Consequences. Glendale Series Typic Torrifluvents (Entisols), fine-silty, mixed (calcareous), thermic. These deep, well drained soils formed in mixed alluvium. They are on flood plains. Slope is 0 to 3%. Typical pedon of Glendale silty clay loam in an area of Glendale-Gila complex, about 12 miles north of Truth or Consequences. Ildefonso Series Ustollic Calciorthids (Aridisols), loamy-skeletal, mixed, mesic. These deep, well drained soils formed in mixed alluvium. They are on dissected piedmonts. Slope is 1 to 75%. Typical pedon of Ildefonso gravelly loam in an area of Scholle-Ildefonso association, about 2 miles southeast of Lake Valley. La Fonda Series Ustollic Camborthids (Aridisols), fine-loamy, mixed, mesic. These deep, well drained soils formed in mixed alluvium. They are on flodd plains and low terraces. Slope is 0 to 5%. Typical pedon of La Fonda loam, about 4 miles east of Winston. Lehmans Series Lithic Haplargids (Aridisols), clayey, montmorillonitic, thermic. These shallow, well drained soils formed in material derived dominantly from acid igeneous rock. They are on the more nearly south-facing side slopes of hills and low mountains. Slope is 0 to 55% Typical pedon of Lehmans very stony clay loam in an area of Lehmans-Luzena association, about 12 miles southeast of Lake Valley. Luzena Series Lithic Argiustolls (Mollisols), clayey, montmorillonitic, mesic. These shallow, well drained soils formed in material derived dominantly from acid igneous rock. Slope is 0 to 5%. Typical pedon of Mimbres silt loam, about 13 miles northeast of Engle. Nickel Series Typic Calciorthids (Aridisols), loamy-skeletal, mixed, thermic. These deep, well drained soils formed in gravelly mixed alluvium. They are on piedmonts. Slope is 1 to 65%. Typical pedon of Nickel very gravelly fine sandy loam in an area of Nickel-Chamberino association, about 10 miles south of Truth or Consequences. Pinaleno Series Typic Haplargids (Aridisols), loamy-skeletal, mixed, thermic. These deep, well drained soils formed in mixed alluvium. They are on piedmonts, high valley terraces, and alluvial fans. Slope is 3 to 15%. Typical pedon of Pinaleno very gravelly sandy loam in an area of Pinaleno-Nolam association, about 22 miles north of Truth or Consequences. These moderately deep, well drained soils formed in residuum and eolian material derived dominantly from basalt. They are on basalt flows. Slope is 1 to 10%. Typical pedon of Thunderbird loam in an area of Thunderbird- Cabezon association, about 6 miles northwest of the Ladder Ranch headquarters. Tres Hermanos Series Typic Haplargids (Aridisols), fine loamy, mixed, thermic. These deep, well drained soils formed in gravelly mixed alluvium. They are on piedmonts. Slope is 1 to 10%. Typical pedon of Tres Hermanos gravelly loam in an area of Tres Hermanos-Hap association, about 9 miles west of Truth or Consequences. Ustorthents deep, well drained soils that formed in mixed alluvium and colluvium. They are on truncated piedmonts. Slope is 35 to 150%???? Sample pedon of Ustorthents in an area of Ustorthents dissected-ildefonso complex. Bluepoint-Onite Association consists of somewhat excessively drained and well drained soils. The soils formed in old sandy alluvium of valley-fill sediments derived from mixed sources. Slopes are 0 to 5%. (Entisol) Mimbres Association consists of well-drained soils, some of which are subject to occasional flooding and overflow. It is on broad, smooth intermountain basins. They formed in mixed alluvium of varying texture. Slopes are 0 to 3%. (Aridosol) Mimbres-Verhalen Association - consists of well-drained and moderately well-drained soils that are subject to occasional flooding and overflow. It is in concave swales and on bottom lands. The soils formed in mixed alluvium. Slopes are 0 to 1%. Berino Series consists of deep, well drained soils. These soils formed in mixed old alluvial sediments reworked by wind. Slopes are 0 to 3%. 18 The Berino and Mohave soils are nearly level to gently undulating mapping unit found on valley-fill material that has been reworked by wind. Slopes are 0 to 3%. (Aridisol) Bluepoint Series - consists of deep, somewhat excessively drained soils that formed in mixed material deposited on flood plains and alluvial fans by streams and washes. Slopes are 0 to 10%. The Bluepoint loamy sand, 3 to 10% slopes is a undulating to rolling soil found on foot slopes around the base of mountains. (Aridisol) Hondale Series consists of deep, well-drained soils on the intermountain valley floor. These soils formed in valley-fill sediments derived from mixed igneous and sedimentary rocks. Slopes are 0 to 3%. (Aridisol) Hondale-Mimbres Complex is a nearly level mapping unit found in large areas southeast of the Florida Mountains and is extensive throughout the county. Slopes are 0 to 1%. Lehmans Series consists of shallow, well-drained soils on hills and lower mountain slopes. These are residual soils that formed over acid igneous bedrock. Slopes are 0 to 25%. (Aridisol) Lehmans very rocky loam, 0 to 10% are nearly level to rolling mapping units in an area associated with acid igneous hills throughout the county. Lehmans extremely rocky loam, 10 to 25% slopes is a rolling to hilly mapping unit found in areas associated with acid igneous hills and mountains throughout the county. Mimbres Series consist of deep, well-drained soils. These soils formed in mixed alluvium deposited on flood plains, terraces and alluvial fans. Slopes are 0 to 3%. (Aridisol) The Mimbres and Verhalen soils are nearly level mapping unit found on alluvial fans and valley-fill sediments. Slopes are 0 to 1%. Mohave Series consist of deep, well-drained soils. These soils formed on alluvial fans in mixed valleyfill sediments. Slopes are 0 to 3%. The surface layer is brown sandy clay loam while the subsoil is reddish-brown and yellowish-red sandy clay loam and clay loam. (Aridisol) The Mohave sandy clay loam, 0 to 3% slopes is a nearly level to gently undulating soil found in the western and northern parts of the county. 19 Nickel-Upton-Tres Hermanos Association - shallow and deep, moderately coarse and medium textured, nearly level to rolling very gravelly and gravelly limy soils on piedmont slopes. This association consists of well-drained soils that are very shallow to shallow over indurated caliche or are deep and contain layers of lime accumulation. Nickel Series consists of deep, well-drained soils. These soils formed on old gravelly alluvial fans of mixed material, commonly around the base of hills and mountains. Slopes are 0 to 9%. The surface layer is dark yellowish-brown very gravelly sandy loam and the lower part id brown to light brown very gravelly loam to cobbly loam. It is strongly calcareous and has lime coating on coarse fragments. (Aridisol) Nickel very gravelly sandy loam, 3 to 9% slopes is an undulating to gently rolling soil formed on old alluvial fans and low ridges around the base of hills or mountains. The Nickel-Tres Hermanos complex is in the south-central part of the county. Pintura Series consists of deep, somewhat excessively drained soils. These soils formed as small hummocks in wind-deposited sandy sediments. Slopes are 0 to 5%. The soil is brown fine sand and generally noncalcareous. (Entisol) Pintura-Berino complex, eroded is mainly found in the central and eastern parts of the county. The Pintura soil forms partly stabilized dunes or hummocks. Rough Broken and Rock Land is very hilly to very steep. It is on hills and in mountainous areas throughout the county. Slopes are 25 to 75%. The soils material is very shallow to shallow over bedrock Stellar Series consists of deep, well-drained soils. These soils formed in mixed materials on alluvial fans and flood plains. Slopes are 0 to 5%. The surface layer is pale-brown silty clay loam and the subsoil is reddish-brown clay and silty clay. (Aridisol) Stellar silty clay loam is a nearly level soil found on scattered, old alluvial fans. Tres Hermanos Series consists of deep, well drained soils. These soils formed in gravelly old alluvial fans derived from mixed igneous and sedimentary rocks around the base of hills and mountains. Slopes are 1 to 5%. The surface layer is pinkish-gray gravelly loam and the subsoil is brown gravelly clay loam. (Aridisol) Turney Series consists of deep, well drained soils. These soils formed in alluvium of mixed origin and are mainly around the Tres Hermanos Mountains. Slopes are 0 to 1%. The surface layer is pinkish-gray fine sandy loam and the subsurface is light-brown heavy loam. (Aridisol) The Turney-Dona Ana Association is a level to nearly level mapping unit found on alluvial fans in the south-central part of the county. Upton Series consists of very shallow and shallow, well-drained soils. These soils formed in gravelly old alluvium on fans derived from limestone, commonly around the base of hills and mountains. Slopes are 0 to 10%. The surface layer is pale-brown gravelly sandy loam and the subsoil is a very pale brown gravelly loam. It is strongly calcareous.
