Actually is one of the cities with colonial architecture more important of Mexico, with a higher tourist activity is the headquarter of the International Cervantino Festival, one of the most importants cultural events in the bondarg Iberianamerican. Guanajuato was pronounced Cultural Patrimony of the Humanity by the UNESCO since 1988 with a population of 144,196 inhabitants (2000 census)

3 Which is the SIMAPAG function? Since 1992 the Guanajuato Potable Water and Sewers System is an organism decentralized with juridical personality and own patrimony. It was created to look out for the detection, extraction, conduction and water supply, its maintenance and to look out for the drainage, sewers and sanitation, control and prevention of water pollution to avoid its bad condition on the water drains. SIMAPAG also looks out for the comercialyzation and sanitization of waste water, to be used again.

4 SIMAPAG activities Due to the current increase of population in Guanajuato city including student and turistic population, SIMAPAG now provide water to 141,000 habitants, by 24,154 diferents water works and 5 vehicles for its distribution (8,103,595 cubic meters potable water) as in the urban zone as rural zone. This quantity is estracted from 2 diferents water shedes (reserves) and 20 wells.

5 To salve the water supply ploblem, in SIMAPAG made and investment consistent in drilling 3 wells that produced at the time 150 lps, nowadays that production is 100 lps. In 1998 some wells were rehabilited through a federal emergence program, whit this program were obtain 60 lps. more than the usual. Also were manufactured more water works and bomb, that garantee the water suply to the high zone in the city, without expect the result of the water sheds.

6 The 2 water sheds have the capacity for only 3.1 millions of cubic meters, wery they are full when in a rainy season surpass the 700 mm. Of anual precipitation, this only happened in 1991, 1997 and 2001 in the last 10 years. That quantity is not enough for the actual necessity.

7 The Puentecillas water reserv has beeb the solution for the water supply, however his weakening is acelerated in this days, in 1982 were drilled some of the wells, with 50 meters of bomb level (from the well to the subsoil), nowday those well on averange provide 20 liters per second per well and the dinamic level now is the 150 meters. The work plan contemplate the drill of one well per year, in a 15 to 20 Km. south zone from the existents wells, in 2001 and 2002 were drilled 2 wells, in this year we want to drill one mere, however new geohydrologics studies contemplate the possibility of drill to 600 meters deep.

8 What is needed: The main requirement is involved to the availability of the potable water, which is expect to be: Require water volume (millons of cubic meters)

9 SIMAPAG five big challenges 1. Increase quality and production of potable water. 2. Have a global efficiency bigger than 60%. 3. Get the integral sanitation of the city. 4. Expand the covering of the services. 5. Improve public atention process.
