5 EXPERIENCE MACAO EAST MEETS WEST IN A UNIQUE CULTURAL HERITAGE Fishermen from Fujian and farmers from Guangdong were the first known settlers in Macao, when it was known as Ou Mun, or trading gate, because of its location at the mouth of the Pearl River downstream from Guangzhou (Canton). In the middle of the 16th century, the Portuguese reached Ou Mun, which the locals also called A Ma Gao, place of A Ma, in honour of the Goddess of Seafarers, whose temple stood at the entrance to the sheltered Inner Harbour. The Portuguese adopted the name, which gradually changes into the name Macau. Boasting a brilliant and fascinating history encompassing 400 years of cultural exchange between China and the West, Macao has become a unique city. The coexistence of Chinese and Western cultures is appeared in its architecture, including picturesque dwellings constructed in traditional styles and ancient temples built during the Ming and Qing dynasties, buildings with Southern European architectural features, baroque style churches and impressive contemporary structures. LEAVE YOUR FOOTPRINTS EVERYWHERE There are trails designed for walking - or jogging or climbing - on the islands and in the city. From the track around Guia Hill there are spectacular views of the city and busy waterways, while a stroll along the Praia Grande introduces you to locals walking P.5

6 with their caged birds or practicing Tai Chi Chuan exercises. You can also walk along trails on Coloane and embrace the beauty of nature. Macao is such a living museum that it hardly needs to build them, but it does and the results are like nothing you ll have seen before. For instance the Maritime Museum is like a ship moored at the entrance of the Inner Harbour, the Macao Museum has been built inside the foundations of the Monte Fort. Of course some museums were purpose-built like the Grand Prix and Wine Museums that are part of the CAT (Tourism Activities Centre) complex, however once you enter them you ll find yourself transported to the world of Formula 3 racing or the vineyards. TASTE THE WORLD S FINEST INTERNATIONAL CUISINE When the Portuguese arrived in Asia they brought foodstuffs and cooking ideas from their settlements in Africa, South America and India as well as from home. These were combined and adapted by the local Chinese to create a truly international cuisine. Look out for Macanese dishes while you sample Macao s many culinary delights - hearty Portuguese, delectable Japanese, rich Italian, African, Indonesian and all kinds of Chinese - in restaurants to suit every taste and budget. ALL-YEAR-ROUND SPLENDID EVENTS Macao boasts a unique festival culture, including such traditional Chinese celebrations as Lunar New Year, Feast of the God Tou Tei, Tun Ng Festival (Dragon Boat Festival) as well as the important Western festivals of Easter, Procession of our Lady of Fátima, and Christmas. Macao Ideas the Macao Products Display Centre under IPIM gives business people a more thorough understanding of Macao brands and products. Afterwards, the Jesuits re-constructed the Church in 1602 and was completed in The reconstructed Church was massive in scale, with a grand façade full of design details. From the bottom the façade has five tiers. A Catholic saint is engraved in each of four tabernacles between columns of the second tier. The walls are covered with bas-reliefs in various patterns, such as chrysanthemum and peony, moon, sun as well as Chinese inscriptions. The whole façade has been acknowledged as a perfect fusion of western and eastern cultures. In 1835, the Church was destroyed by fire. 26 Na Tcha Temple Built in 1888, this temple is dedicated to the worship of Na Tcha. This small traditional Chinese temple stands close to the remains of the principal Jesuit enterprise of the region, presenting a dialectic of western and Chinese ideals, as one of the best examples of Macao s multicultural identity and religious freedom. 哪吒廟哪吒廟位於大三巴牌坊後右側, 創建於 1888 年, 改建於 1901 年 廟內供奉的哪吒, 是一個神話人物, 從 17 世紀後期開始受澳門民間供奉, 這種廟不多, 是澳門本地富有地方色彩的民間信仰 Travessa da Paixão This small little lane looks no different than many other lanes found in Macau but its specialty lies in its name, Travessa da Paixão. The Portuguese word Paixão means passion and love. Originally it expresses catholic passion to the God but due to the mistranslation, Travessa da Paixão becomes Love Lane. Nowadays, the lane becomes an ideal place for dating, wedding photo shooting, as well as scene of some TV series and films. In line with the plans of further development of film industry, the government plans to build a stylized art cinema nearby to boost its surrounding cultural atmosphere. 28 The Government Headquarter The Government Headquarter (formerly known as Protocol Palace) was built in The then Governor of Macao bought the house in 1881 and made it his official residence. Later, it became the office building for succeeding governors of Macao. Upon establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government, renovation and alteration works were carried out to bring the building to its present appearance. The Government Headquarter consists of office of the Chief Executive of Macao SAR Government, a meeting room for the Executive Council, the Green Hall, the Yellow Hall, the Blue Hall and the Lotus Room. Largo da Barra, open 7am-6pm Mandarin s House A stark juxtaposition of Western and Chinese design, this mid-19th century complex was once home to reformist Zheng Guanying, the earliest advocate of a representative and participatory political system in China. 10 Travessa de António de Silva, open 10am-6pm (closed on Wed) Taipa Houses-Museum A row of colonial houses from the early 20th century, these five restored waterside structures offer a glimpse into life in Macanese colonial times.
