5 IN FOR MAT IO N, A CTIV IT IE S AN D EV ENT S NCAA Bids The NCAA recently disseminated information pertaining to the bids. As a result of the changes in North Carolina law governing civil rights protections the NCAA has pulled all previously awarded championships from the state. The NCAA Board of Governors will be reviewing all future championships very closely and therefore require more time to look at submitted proposals. The awards will not be announced in December as originally shared. Awards will now be announced in early spring CVB Website Update In late September, CVB staff met with HydraMX to discuss plans for a new, redesigned website. Focus will be on creation of content, ease of navigation, continuity across multiple platforms, and increasing traffic. An interactive events calendar was also discussed. HydraMX and CVB staff are expecting a tentative roll-out date after January 1 st, CVB Social Medial Followers Below is the current count of followers on all three social media platforms. Staff plans to track these follower increases month by month. Facebook: 108 Twitter: 982 Instagram: 333 Hotel Industry News The hotel lending landscape is changing according to Hotel News Now (HNN). In August Sean McCracken of HNN met with a group of nine lenders to discuss the industry outlook and changes in financing. While the group showed confidence in the immediate future, long term financing could become more difficult. With a more conservative lending environment, the group maintained there are several factors that drive lending to include: A good sponsor; The right brand and Properties with potential. In addition, five things borrowers should know is: 1. Don t expect the cycle to repeat itself. The amount of supply added or in the pipeline this cycle relative to past cycles is not as robust 2. There are still options. There s definitely still lending available in today s market with focus on the importance of knowing you re lender and their ability to execute. 3. Lenders expect to keep supply down. lenders have learned a lesson from previous cycles. One of those lessons is not to enable the excess of the development community. 4. Goldilocks zone for lenders. There s a good balance of supply and demand 5. Valuations have likely peaked. asset valuations hit their highest points in They said valuations have likely hit a stabilized-and more realistic-point and seem to be holding steady. For more information you can review the articles at and In development news, Danielle Hess of HNN reported that most hoteliers are confident development will be robust and strong in the months to come. There are some who believe the industry will peak and stabilize, considering the record year for some franchise sales. Choice hotels is reportedly set to sell 700 franchises this year and more than 5 of activity is new construction. Conservative financing, as mentioned above, as well as construction costs are Page 5

6 mentioned in the article as two factors slowing development. For more details the article can be found at In other news, information from the 2016 Hotel Data Conference suggests the full service hotel isn t dead, it s changing. Participants stressed a focus on what the consumer wants and hinted that where a hotel sits on the chain scale determines the expectations. For example, the luxury and upper scale chains still focus on the dining experience. Types of services guests wants seem to be changing and include fast service and convenience and use of technology to provide more services while reducing costs, such as moving from a full-staffed concierge to a virtual one. Labor costs are listed at the primary threat to full service. For more information visit Businesses/Hotels visited in September: Babin s BJ s Chuy s Fielding s Jimmy John s Lenny s Outback Steakhouse Main Event Pappasito s Philly Connection Schlotsky s Subway Clarion Suites Courtyard Marriott Days Inn Hampton Inn Holiday Inn Homewood Suites La Quinta Inn & Suites TownePlace Suites Staff met with Fielding s to discuss current and future events held at the restaurant, including All Day $3 Happy Hour in September and Cider Sunday with Austin Eastciders in October. Staff promotes their events on the CVB Facebook page. Updated brochures were given by Jimmy Johns, Lenny s, Philly Connection, Schlotsky s, and Subway to display in the Visitors Center and to be put into promotional bags for groups at the hotels. These are all quick lunch option stops that many business travelers are looking for during their stays. Main Event requested a digital ad to be added to the Interactive Touch Screens. Both the Sales Manager and Corporate staff member came into the Visitors Center to view the screens and their displayed ad. Pappasito s hosted a special invite only pre-opening event on September 8 th, followed by their official opening on September 13 th. The opening of Pappasito s was highly anticipated and posted on several social media accounts and online news sources. According to Pappasito s management, both the pre-opening and official opening were very successful events. Staff visited with the above hotels to provide them with Shenandoah dining guides and to check in with them. All hotels are suffering from low occupancy, which is reflected in the Hotel Occupancy Tax graph and table yearly comparisons above. Staff provided Homewood Suites with 50 promotional bags for hotel groups. Fairfield Inn & Suites Houston The Woodlands requested Dining Guides to give out to their guests. Staff checked with Shenandoah hotels for permission and they were okay with them displaying the Dining Guides in their hotel.
