1 March/April 2009 Serving Chicago, Northern Illinois, Wisconsin and Eastern Iowa Website: Editor: Angela Mertens 4109 Springbrook Ct Pleasant Prairie, WI (262) President s Column Cissy Sullivan photo by Ted Meeker Hi Newf Friends, When this article comes out our Regional will have been yet another wonderful event. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all the entrants, your participation in this annual affair is greatly appreciated. Under the lead of Joan Gunn, our show chair, board members, general membership members and volunteers teamed up to make this large undertaking a reality. Thank you Joan and the many helpers for your efforts on behalf of the club. Your generosity of time and volunteerism is greatly appreciated. When I began as President I commented to the board that I would like to initiate a project called Meet the Membership. During the last several issues of our newsletter, I have been trying to introduce some important members and link a photo of them so that all members new and established can put a name with a face. In keeping with my common theme of Someone you should know, I hope that I am achieving a portion of that goal. This article will highlight two members who do so much but usually work behind the scenes. Without these two ladies we would not be kept up to date on the clubs business, announcements and detailed information about upcoming events. My thanks and words of appreciation go out to Karen Clancy and Angela Mertens. Karen Clancy has been at the helm of our website for some time now. The title of webmaster is not the only hat that Karen wears on behalf of the club. She is one of the co founders of the ever successful Newfiepalooza, which deserves an article devoted to just that and she also helps with other aspects of rescue. Karen has always encouraged the board to utilize our website to its fullest potential, and has given great ideas on how to do just that. I am sure you all have reaped the benefits of having this resource available to you, and Karen makes that happen. My thanks and appreciation goes out to you, Karen, for all your hard work and continued devotion for the whole club. The other member who keeps us IN THE KNOW. is Angela Mertens. Since I have been active in the club, Angela has always been the editor of our newsletter. The newsletters along with the website are the links to the heartbeat of our club. Our newsletter is Angela s labor of love done for the insight and enjoyment of all our members. Angela is responsible for proof reading all items submitted, formatting them into a visually eye-catching manner, working within the guidelines set for Continued on page 27

4 Newf News March/April 2009 page Regional Specialty Another Successful Specialty for NCNC February 27th & 28th, 2009 On Friday, February 27 and Saturday, February 28, we held our third two day Regional Specialty. Our entries in breed were up over last year, a wonderful achievement given the current economy and a new show site. Our new site was the Washington County Fair Park, West Bend, Wisconsin. Although a little farther than our last show site it afforded us the opportunity to have grooming and set-up as close to the rings as possible, so everyone could enjoy the show. And, in spite of freezing rain Thursday night, overall there were very few dogs absent from this event. The winners and qualifiers appear elsewhere but it bears saying that we were all winners. Whether you showed a Newf in conformation, sweeps, obedience, or rally or just came out to get a Newfy fix, the fun, enthusiasm and camaraderie experienced made us all feel good, like winners - who could ever feel anything else with these great dogs by our sides! As with all the things this club undertakes, we are eternally indebted to our many volunteers who have worked so hard to make this another memorable event. Just a few of them, there are many more, Chief Ring Stewards, Jan Danielsen (Friday) and Rick Torres (Saturday); Chief Obedience Steward, Melissa Torres; Grounds and Set-up, Roger Danielsen; Hospitality, Raffle and Auction, Cissy Sullivan and Tara Bertrand; Trophies, Linda Larsen; Banquet, Dona Baker; and Judges Hospitality, Mary Trauernicht, plus a small army of people who pitched in to man tables, sell catalogs, pass out ring favors and armbands, steward, clean-up/set-up, and who generally pitched in to help out with any job needing doing! Our days began with enough coffee and rolls to fill a hungry person, hospitality was the theme of the day, and continued with various snacks throughout. Raffle and auction saw beautiful objects with a desk painted by Cissy for which we all envied the winner. Our trophies were beautiful bibs and hand thrown blue pottery. They looked as beautiful on the table as they did in the smiling hands of winners. We ended day one with our celebration banquet at a nearby restaurant. Maybe our best meal to date! We all came back for day two, it was, it seemed, as good as day one. Thank you all again. I hope you enjoyed the day as much as I did! Joan Gunn Show Chair AND THE WINNERS ARE... 27 Newf News March/April 2009 page 27 President s Column (continued) this publication, and above all working with the many members to get THEIR information just right!! Not always an easy task. Angela and her husband John are also dedicated rescue workers. Thanks Angela for your hard work and devotion to the club. It usually is the norm to hear complaints about MANY different areas of clubs and their workings, but what takes such a small amount of time and is so greatly appreciated are the few times someone gets a "Thanks", or a word of appreciation. I hope if you see these two ladies at an event you might pass along a positive word to them. It will take less than a minute but the feeling of kindness it brings will last SO MUCH LONGER.
