2 Study Serve - Learn Chantal THERY-BOYRON founded the IML association in 1988, inspired by a conviction: that language is a living structure inseparable from its cultural context. The IMLS, an education center created in 2001 maintains this vision with the idea that language learning is a training experience, aimed not only at the individual but also at citizens who are aware that one can only develop through the help of others. The IMLS responds to the pressing need for social cohesion and intercultural exchange. The promoters of the program wish to give young adults an opportunity to get a holistic view of the community linking traditional learning and experimentation. Thus the student will not be enclosed in an academic institution on a university campus but will be part of a richer relationship with the city as a whole. If students do not arrive or leave at official dates, they should notify their host family before arrival to make sure they can be hosted and pay for additional fees. COURSES French as a foreign language course Every morning from Monday to Friday Language levels The level of the student is assessed by a preliminary test according to the CEFR(Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) which describes which skills a learner is supposed to acquire in reading, listening, speaking and writing at each level. The CEFRL divides learners into three broad divisions A - Basic User B - Independent User C - Proficient User The students are assigned to groups according to their scores. Arabic language Modern & standard Arabic for beginners The course is designed for complete beginners to enable learners to communicate in Modern Standard Arabic within a limited range of everyday situations using the four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The course introduces the students to the Arabic writing system and enables them to read and write basic words and sentences. Modern Standard Arabic is the recognized means of formal spoken and written communication. It is used throughout the Arabic speaking world on official occasions, in education and the media. The course is taught in English and Arabic using contemporary printed material including: Step-by-step guide to understand written and spoken texts and develop conversational ability as well as reading and writing skills An Arabic-English Glossary Authentic texts and dialogues containing up to date data about the Middle East and North Africa A variety of vocabulary learning exercises Euro-Mediterranean studies This course focuses on cross-cultural relations between Europe and neighbouring countries. 1st part : Relationships between Europe and the Mediterranean countries Geographical and historical aspects : The European idea until 1945 and the birth of European unity Geopolitics of the Union, a global European approach The European Union and the Mediterranean world The European Union and its borders : The European Neighbourhood policy of the E.U. 2 nd part : Relationships between France and the North-African countries Geographical and historical aspects (relationships and conquests, autonomy and independence France-Maghreb, from colonisation to cooperation and a peaceful partnership Economic and security issues (trade, energy security, migration policy Socio-cultural aspects (immigration, integration, identity, cultural diversity) Course taught in French or English depending on participants language proficiency

6 CULTURAL HERITAGE Excursions (choices and dates to be confirmed) Nîmes Pont du Gard The Pont du Gard is a magnificent three-tier Roman aqueduct which channeled water from Uzes to Nîmes. It was classified as a historical site in 1840 and became a World Heritage site in Nîmes is located between the Mediterranean and the Cevennes mountains. It dates back to ancient times to which remarkable moments can testify : the arenas, the Maison Carree or the Magne tower. Nîmes has been called «the French Rome». Pézenas - Cap d'agde Canal du Midi Béziers One day to discover three cities of Languedoc quite different between them. The first will be Pézenas, "La petite Versailles du Languedoc", administration capital of the region from the 15 th to the 17 th century. Well known because of its beautiful hotels and the "petits pâtés de Pézenas" (culinary specialty since the 18 th century) Afterwards the visit will set a course for Cap d'agde, a seaside resort on the Mediterranean Sea, built on a volcanic flow and its black beach, unique in France. At the end of the trip you will visit Sète "La petite Venise du Languedoc", first fishing harbour of the French Mediterranean sea and, moreover, native city of the singer Brassens and the poet Paul Valéry. Marseille Known to both the ancient Greeks and Romans as Massalia, Marseille was historically the most important trade center in the region and functioned as the main trading port of the French Empire. Marseille is listed as a major centre of art and history. The city has many museums and galleries and there are many ancient buildings and churches of historical interest: The Old Port or Vieux-Port, the Musée des Civilisations de l'europe et de la Méditerranée (MuCEM) and the Villa Méditerranée, the 19 th -century Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde "La Bonne Mère"

7 Arles and les Baux-de-Provence Visit of the Camargue's capital with its unique roman heritage in France and starting point of the Routes to Santiago de Compostela. Arles is the city that strongly influenced several artists such as the famous painter Van Gogh which drew many pictures here. Our second step is the charming village of Baux de Provence, with its beautiful medieval and natural heritage. Carcassonne Carcassonne, one of the most breathtaking fortresses in all of Europe, restored by Viollet-le-Duc during the XIX th century, has been a World Heritage site since You would be able to visit the old medieval bridge of Orb, the ancient castle with a magnificent panorama of the city and the whole region and the old Gothic cathedral St Nazaire. You will also have an opportunity to taste famous cassoulet, a regional specialty made by sausage and flageolet and the famous regional red wine of Carcassonne offered at the end of the visit. Whale, dolphin and bird watching in the Mediterranean Embark with a team of naturalists, photographers and scientists for a unique experience off the Languedoc coast. 8 Wine tasting Discover the secrets of French terroir! Visit the region and its internationally recognized wine-growing heritage, and learn about wine-tasting. An experienced and enthusiastic guide will introduce you to the region and its wines in small groups and a friendly atmosphere. Montpellier is surrounded by wine-growing domains, and each one of them have their own caracteristics and surprises! Olive oil Authentic Mediterranean symbol, olive is a millennial heritage. The region is well known for its unique varieties of olive, such as the Picholine, the Luques, l Olivière and more! Oil, soap, cosmetic, wood, so many different uses that you will discover will visiting the olive grove, and of course let s not forget the olive oil degustation, which has its codes and rules, just like wine testing. Oyster-Farming Delicious oysters! All year round, shellfish farmers share their profession with groups, individuals, families and school children by appointment at their farmhouse, overlooking the Thau Lagoon at Mèze. Visitors have a guided tour followed by a tasting session or lunch break, with a mixture of raw or cooked shellfish. An unforgettable trip for mouth-watering memories

9 Volunteer passport Students receive a volunteer passport at the end of the program. The volunteer passport is a Volunteering certificate, a link between the volunteer and the association or service agency. The passport keeps track of the volunteer It provides details about the volunteer s achievements It describes and enhances the skills developed while volunteering It testifies to the activities performed in the association It can be used as evidence for validation of experiential learning
