2 Welcome, The University of the Balearic Islands invites you to learn languages in privileged surroundings, where the peace, tranquillity and well-being of Mediterranean living come together in perfect harmony with a work-oriented environment designed to educate, generate knowledge and innovate, while always aspiring to excellence in research and quality. As you are captivated by the striking Serra de Tramuntana Mountains, which became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2010, and the warm Mediterranean Sea, our university campus in Palma opens its doors to offer you its vast experience in language learning and to enable you to enjoy a multilingual environment in a culturally rich and diverse society. It is not by chance that more than 160 different languages from all around the world come together in the Balearic Islands, alongside the two official languages that are most widely spoken here: Catalan, our own language, and. In this privileged environment that has become a magnet for distinguished public figures, artists and writers from all over Europe and worldwide for centuries, the UIB is one of the country s leading universities in teaching, research, international cooperation and technological development and innovation. I am confident that your stay at the UIB will be an enriching experience and, as Vice Chancellor, I invite you to become a part of our university. Llorenç Huguet Vice Chancellor of the Universitat de les Illes Balears University of Balearic Islands 10 Reasons 1/ Because of our prestige 2/ Because we are well connected with the world It will take you longer to pack your bags than it will to arrive at the UIB. Palma international airport is just 15 minutes from the UIB campus. In Menorca and Eivissa, the distances between their respective airports and university headquarters are similar. In a word, in little more than three hours, our university connects with Europe s main capital cities. As an institution committed to excellence and quality, the UIB comes high up in all the university rankings. We are the number two university in Spain in terms of research quality; the sixth in terms of productivity, the eighth in teaching and the eighteenth in technological development and innovation (1). We are also the second most published university in the country in terms of international collaborations; and the published papers and books by our staff have positioned us as the sixth most highly ranked university in the country in terms of the frequency of international scholarly references to our publications (2). We are among the top ten universities worldwide in tourism research (3) ; and, moreover, we are the coordinators of the Euro-Mediterranean Tourism and Water Campus. 3/ Because of our campus The UIB has a university campus in Palma (Mallorca), as well as university headquarters on the islands of Menorca and Eivissa-Formentera. At our campus, you will have everything you need to ensure that your stay is a complete success: complementary Wi-Fi connection, libraries, sports facilities (including an indoor swimming pool), student accommodation, bars and restaurants, a pharmacy and a healthcare centre. In addition to Catalan, the local language, and, more than 160 other languages from around the world are spoken here. This diversity has its place at the UIB, where teaching is encouraged in Catalan, and. To promote foreign language learning, the UIB has a Linguistic Service that offers courses of the finest quality in different languages. Classes are so dynamic, practical and effective, that with just a bit of effort, you are sure to learn the language that you have set out to learn. (1). 3 5/ Because of our environment The UIB campus is located at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana Mountains (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), on the outskirts of our capital city, Palma, and just a few kilometres away from the Mediterranean s finest beaches. Moreover, Mallorca, Menorca, Eivissa and Formentera boast an average of 300 days of sunshine each year that enable us to enjoy a wide variety of outdoor cultural activities all year round. 6/ Because we are accessible The UIB also boasts ideal connections with all corners of the archipelago. In Palma, for example, buses and the metro have very good timetables and frequencies and connect the university to the city with a journey time of just 13 minutes. The campus is also connected to the city by a paved bike lane. 7/ Because we take good care of you throughout your stay Your feeling that you belong at the UIB is our main goal, and we manage to make this a reality because of our students and professors. This help is not merely limited to welcoming you. The International Relations Service is by your side throughout your entire stay, to give you support and guidance. You never need to feel alone.
