3 Our institution Consell de Mallorca is a local public entity with governmental and administrative functions, representative of the island of Mallorca. Established in 1978 as a result of the approval of the regime of Consells Insulars and officially instituted according to the Statute of Autonomy of Balearic Islands in municipalities km inhabitants (2011)

8 One of the european main tourist areas (9 million tourists in 2012) Tourist activities focused in coastal areas, and summer season But also. Economic crisis: unemployment rate of 23,5% in Balearic region in 2012 Construction sector is affected, and public investments decreases

9 ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS OF HIKING ROUTES Hiking routes to promote local Sustainable development Contribute to diversification from seasonal tourism Economical development of areas out of tourism mass development areas Different high season period in comparison with traditional tourism Needs a complementary service s offer

11 CULTURAL ROUTES IN MALLORCA The Cultural Routes are planed to discover the rural areas of Mallorca by walking Designed to offer an individual experience, based on the high quality area, with exceptional landscapes and cultural value The rural heritage is one of the key of these routes

12 Objectives of Consell de Mallorca s Hiking routes - Support local development in rural areas - Contribute to diversification from seasonal tourism - Contribute to heritage recovery, restoration and maintenance - Improve the quality of infrastructures linked to routes - Disseminate natural, cultural and heritage values - Spread the importance of the traditional livestock, farming and forestry activities

28 Dry Stone Route GR-221 The project will run over 272 km of signalled paths by connecting all villages in Serra de Tramuntana mountain range Dry stone elements are the hallmark of the route 15 municipalities

29 Artà Lluc Route GR-222 The route will go across Majorca from east to west over 134 km of signalled paths High landscape diversity and biodiversity It will connect the main tourist areas in the north east coast and pass by 11 municipalities
