3 TOURIST RESOURCES Tulcea County is an excellent tourist area. The beauty and diversity of the landscape, the meeting of the Danube with the Black Sea, the richness and variety of archaeological remains and historical monuments give the county its uniqueness. The tourist potential of the North Dobrudjan area is determined mainly by the elements of the natural framework, which, by their harmonious combination, give a great originality to the landscape.

4 T TYPES OF TOURISM PRACTICED IN TULCEA COUNTY Tulcea County represents one of the biggest tourist attractions in Romania. The beauty and diversity of the natural environment, the richness and variety of archaeological remains and historical monuments, the geographic location and temperate continental climate, the multiculturalism and the richness of the traditions of the 17 ethnics, are just a few elements that give the county uniqueness and specificity. Defined as a unitary tourist destination, the territory of Tulcea County offers opportunities for organizing and carrying out many recreational and visiting activities for various types of visitors. Because the types of tourism are defined taking into account the categories of tourists for which there are offers throughout the county and which, in any future tourism development project, will constitute the target groups, we consider it necessary to include in our analysis all these categories: nature lovers - ornithologists, birdwatchers and other environmental specialists, nature lovers, hikers - nature and landscape lovers and cyclists; tourists passionate about holidays and activities related to water such as fishermen, rowers, motor boat enthusiasts, visitors to tourist resorts, located mainly in the Danube Delta Reserve, tourists oriented towards educational and scientific activities: history, environment, education and training, culture-oriented visitors.

5 TOURIST AREAS Tulcea County, an area still unrecognized and touristically capitalized, has a rich natural and anthropic potential to be properly promoted. The Danube Delta, a fauna and flora paradise with unforgettable landscapes and ponds suitable for practicing fishing, is a prerequisite for organized tourism in the most varied forms. The great number of monasteries and places of worship are waiting for believers everywhere, and archaeological sites, architectural monuments, museums and other interesting tourist attractions all over the county offer plenty of opportunities for spending time. Most visitors are impressed by the specificity of the Danube Delta inhabitants and the traditional cuisine here, and that is why it is necessary to make this area known, benefiting from a very high tourist potential, even if gastronomic tourism is a form of relatively new tourism in Romania.

6 SULINA - SFÂNTU GHEORGHE AREA

7 The Sulina - Sfântu Gheorghe area comprises the two destinations situated at the Danube's flowing into the Black Sea, through the two distinct branches of the Danube, Sulina and Sfantu-Gheorghe. Sulina can offer two types of tourism, heliomarine tourism (beach, seaside and the town with most sunny days) and cultural tourism (headquarters of the first European Danube Commission established in 1856, Porto Franco, multiethnic socio-cultural influences, the multicultural cemetery). Sfantu-Gheorghe is a destination that offers the possibility of organizing both heliomarine tourism activities (a very wild and fine sandy beach), as well as sports and traditional fishing tourism and cultural tourism (hosting in August an international film festival). With these characteristics, the area can become an important destination for heliomarine tourism (such as those on the seaside in the southern area of Dobrudja, between Năvodari and Vama Veche), which offers many other attractions related to the multiethnic local traditions.

8 The main objectives for this area are: 1. Rehabilitation of cultural and multi-ethnic heritage objectives. 2. Diversification of tourist offer by integrating birdwatching packages into the general offer (Câșla Vădanei Channel) potential observation tower, the same for the Gulf of Musura the clogged area where some bird species can be seen in order to redistribute the flow of visitors to less sensitive areas. 3. Making a direct connection between Sulina and Sf. Gheorghe, by rehabilitating the existing route (which is inadequate, dependent upon on the level of the waters in the delta, in their spill areas); creating special hiking, cycling, canoeing and kayaking trails. 4. Integration of local traditions and gastronomy into offers (restaurants, boarding houses). 5. Implementation of renaturation projects. Regarding Sulina, it is necessary to develop the reception infrastructure. The Information Center belonging to DDBRA needs expansion, rehabilitation, modernization, endowment with modern equipment so as to become a modern reception center offering the latest information tools. The Center's activities should also take into account the promotion of the natural, cultural and socioeconomic values of the Black Sea area.
