1 MARKET REPORT WEEK 15 BASED ON SALES AND PURCHASES OF VESSELS WEEK ENDED FRIDAY 11 TH APRIL The drycargo freight market slide continued last week with Capes again leading the way via a further -22.5% w-o-w fall to add to its -10% the week before and a collective 56% drop since the beginning of this year (even though it rallied by 22% and 42% in weeks 9 and 10 respectively). The really worrying aspect though is that there are excess 330 capesize vessels on order to be delivered in the period , against only 99 vessels currently afloat over dwt that will be 20 years or more old by So at best, the cape fleet can expect to add over 200 more vessels in the next 3 years... The BPI lost -5% last week as did the BSI at -7.5% and the BHSI by -7%, all contributing to a BDI w-o-w decline of -17%. We make no apology for constantly mentioning the volumes of newbuildings on order as we fear greatly for the near to medium term future of our industry as the order books have grown against no projections of a speedy world economic recovery. Between Jan 2014 and end 2017 the following minimum numbers of drycargo newbuildings are scheduled for delivery: capes 330, panamax / kamsarmax/post panamax: 325, Supramax 720, Handysize 450. We worry that such huge dwt volumes being delivered into the marketplace can only have a negative effect. The above bulker newbuilding volume is causing would be buyers (many of them being corporate or private investors looking for a 'buy into shipping' at what they perceive to be the 'bottom of a shipping market cycle') to now turn their attention to the wet markets where the ordering has so far been far more subdued, except for MR's. So far the numbers of tankers on order to be delivered in the same period are UL/VLCC's: 88, Suezmax: 36, Aframax: 111, Panamax: 34, MR's 345. We hope that the much higher liabilities associated with operating tankers keep the speculators away. The 'antidote' to the order books is of course the demolition markets and whilst it is pleasing to note that the sub-continent continues to offer strong rates in the mid / high $400's, it seems not enough vessels are currently going that route. Maybe we will see a surge in recycling sales soon urged by the diminishing returns from the freight markets and because the monsoon season will soon be upon us when the breakers tend to go bearish. 1
