1 MARKET REPORT WEEK 34 BASED ON SALES AND PURCHASES OF VESSELS WEEK ENDED FRIDAY 26 th AUGUST Whilst world financial markets continue to concern, and the gold price continues to rise (being seen as a safe haven), amazingly the BDI continues to rise too. Though it only finished about 5.5% up w-o-w, it was looking like it would be a lot more until the BCI and BPI went into reverse for the last 2 days of the week. The week ended with all indices up: BCI 5.6%, BPI 2.6%, BSI 3.6% and BHSI 2.9%. Being the middle of August and on what is overall still a falling market, the levels of concluded S+P business remains low and indeed sales concluded and those still negotiating or on subjects bear out the declining trend whereby it would appear that VLCC's built around 2000 have declined in value by about 30% in the past 5 months and very modern capes built around 2010/11 have declined in value by about 20% in the past 3 months. Meanwhile larger and more modern handysize bulkers appear to be pro-rata holding their values much better whereas older / overage tonnage values are slipping faster due to the projected poor earnings they will make between now and the natural end of their trading lives. Rates on offer in the demolition markets remain about the same from both the Indian sub continent and China. 1
