1 MARKET REPORT WEEK 49 BASED ON SALES AND PURCHASES OF VESSELS WEEK ENDED FRIDAY 6 TH DECEMBER It was another positive week in both the wet and dry freight markets. The BDi put on +19% during last week, went through the 2000 mark and ended up at its highest level (2176) for The chief instigator was again the capes with the BDI seeing a +24% w-o-w gain taking average capsize t/c rates to just under $34,000 daily. Meanwhile the BPI improved by another +15% to add to its +22% the week before, whilst the BSI (+5%) and BHSI (+3%) also continued their steady improvement this being the 16th straight week that each of these latter two indices have each increased week on week. The levels of reported second hand wet and dry sales has tailed off further but this is still more to do with a lack of suitable candidates for sale rather than any less willingness of buyers or approaching seasonal holiday interruptions. Sub continent recycling buying activity remains jittery in all areas; in India and Pakistan because their individual Rupee currencies remain under pressure against the Dollar as does local steel prices, and in Bangladesh because there will be government elections on January 5 th which has already resulted in some unrest on the streets thereby causing many businesses to 'hold fire' on new acquisitions for the time being. China meantime remains almost dormant we suspect whilst they process current stocks probably to return to the market to re-stock with a new batch of vessels sometime in the new year. It will be interesting to monitor overall recycling activity from now because if dry freight rates continue to rise then more owners might be tempted to put pass fifth special surveys rather than scrapping tonnage. 1
