1 NILIMAR Ships Sale & Purchase MARKET REPORT WEEK 19 BASED ON SALES AND PURCHASES OF VESSELS WEEK ENDED FRIDAY 11 th May There is not much excitement to write about this Monday as last week was fairly uneventful all round. To summarize: The BDI was little changed, only lower by a marginal -1.64% w-o-w, because whilst the BPI continued its minor adjustment by falling a further -13.5%, that was nearly all offset by gains of +2.5% for the BCI, and +2.3% by the BHSI, with the BSI basically standing still. Looking at todays activity we sense an overall slightly negative trend across the dry freight sector at the moment. On the S+P front it appears that 90's built tonnage is the predominant purchase at this time in both wet and dry sectors, but we suspect that is more to do with what is available for sale rather than what buyers really want, ie we believe there are plenty of buyers who would buy 2000's built tonnage if it were available. Definitely there are now a lot more willing buyers shopping around, but with new vessels still delivering in their droves during 2012 and plenty of owners under financial strain we feel it will remain a buyer's market for quite a few months more. Having said that - buyers should also not leave it to late to do their 'shopping' either since overall we doubt levels will fall a great deal further from where they are today. The demolition sector appears to have finally reversed its bullish buying sentiment into a more bearish one during the past week, with rates on offer weakening from all major destinations. This is a continuation of what we have been reporting in the past few weeks; all major demolition yards (in both the sub continent and China) now have plenty of purchased 'stock' tonnage in hand to be getting on with, budgets are approaching in Bangladesh and Pakistan, local scrap steel prices have fallen in India and China, and the monsoon season has started during which the affected yards usually have less manual workers on hand. 1
