1 MARKET REPORT WEEK 1 BASED ON SALES AND PURCHASES OF VESSELS WEEK ENDED FRIDAY 4 th January Nilimar wishes a health, wealthy and happy New Year to all our readers Our last report was on 17th December so this report contains information on second hand sales etc reported during the intervening 3 week period. Many of the long list of newbuildings however are likely to have been contracted sometime before this period but have only now come to market knowledge. Looking back over 2012 we note that whilst world trade increased by over 4% year on year and overall by about 14% since 2008, the oversupply of new vessels being delivered has again quashed what could have been a good year for freight rates / shipping in general. As of today the world fleet (wet and dry) is now about 20% over its required capacity and even via another anticipated active year of scrapping in 2013, that 20% oversupply will increase via 2013's scheduled newbuilding deliveries. And yet our industry still does not seem to be grasping the fundamental ''oversupply'' issue, the damage it is doing and the fact that the more new vessels that flood onto the markets the longer any sustainable recovery will take. Whilst ordering newbuilding vessels for niche under ordered sectors of say the LPG / LNG flee might be justifiable, the ordering of more tonnage into already overburdened / modern sectors of the fleet is just plain crazy but too many parties seem unable to resist the seduction 'super eco' designs and/or the thought of a vessel delivering in 3 years time by which time a market upswing is presumed. The past three week period including Christmas and New Year bank holidays and non trading days, has seen the BDI lose a further 10% overall, caused mainly by the larger sized vessels taking the brunt; the BCI lost -11% and the BPI an unpleasant -18.5%. Meanwhile the smaller sizes basically stood still with the BSI off just -1% and the BHSI gained a minimal +0.6%. Predictably the second hand S+P markets were not hugely busy over the festive period and although there are quite a list of 'sold' vessels in our report below, it is as reported over a 3 week period and includes several multi vessel 'en bloc' deals. Overall second hand prices remain under pressure although certain sectors are benefiting from those buyers who have money to spend and are of the opinion that vessels they buy at todays levels, they can probably just about run at break even at todays rates, and the asset will likely appreciate in value as the markets recovers in the medium term - which is likely to be between 1-3 years down the line somewhere... The pleasant surprise of the past week or so has been the upswing in the levels the demolition sector has been willing to pay for tonnage. India is reported to have paid region $465 / 476 for 2 (desirable to breakers) container vessels, and both Bangladesh and India paid in the $420's for bulkers. China meanwhile appears keen to take in some more tonnage pre Chinese New Year (in early Feb) and reportedly last week paid region $430 for a panamax bulker with about 1000 tons ROB's on board. That is a massive hike by China which was only willing to pay low $300's just 2 or 3 months ago. 1
