2 Purposes of Ballast Water Sampling Enforcement Scientific Research Determine count of organisms in ballast water Physico chemical parameters salinity (D1) Determine count, type of organisms in ballast water Physico chemical parameters (Salinity, ph, temperature, dissolved oxygen etc) Age of ballast water species survivability D 2 Standard treatment on board Category Standard to be met > 50 µ (Zooplankton) <10 organisms per m µ (Phytoplankton) <10 organisms per ml Bacteria Toxicogenic Vibrio cholerae Escherichia coli Intestinal Enterococci 1 cfu/100 ml 250 cfu/100 ml 100 cfu/100 ml

9 Water sampler BUCKET Why Bucket??? 1. We need 100 Liters of ballast water per vessel 2. Bucket = liters Niskin and Vandorn = 5 liters 3. Bucket easy to operate, Niskinand Vandorn need to be assembled, more steps to operate. 4. Try not to disrupt the ship operation for too long Disadvantage only water from surface of ballast tank sampled
