2 GUILD HALL OF EAST HAMPTON Dear Members and Friends of Guild Hall, You are cordially invited to join us for a very special Caribbean adventure aboard the legendary sailing yacht Sea Cloud. Our trip will be hosted by East Hampton friends and members of Guild Hall, the renowned actress Dina Merrill and her husband Ted Hartley, Chairman and CEO of RKO Pictures. Dina grew up on board Sea Cloud, originally built in 1931 by her parents, heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and financier E.F. Hutton. We will be privileged to hear about her experiences as she traveled the globe, often with dignitaries and world figures. We will also hear about Dina and Ted s many philanthropic efforts, including The Story Project, an organization they founded to foster communication skills in at-risk youth. Painstakingly restored to its former glory, Sea Cloud combines comfort and a casual atmosphere with fine service. Tasteful surroundings and five-star dining complement the heady experience of traveling under wind-lofted sails. Limited to 50 passengers, this will truly feel like a glamorous party aboard a private yacht. And there is no more delightful place to sail than the Caribbean, with its balmy island breezes and centuriesold tradition of gardening. Cruising round-trip from Barbados from February 20 to 27, 2009, we will step ashore in Trinidad, where we visit two private homes with spectacular gardens; the Spice Island of Grenada; Bequia, a snorkeler s paradise; sophisticated Martinique and St. Lucia, with its towering twin peaks. We will also have time to relax on pristine beaches and swim in the dazzling azure water. For those of you who might wish to extend your vacation, an optional prelude in Barbados has been arranged at supplemental cost. Our voyage will be further enriched by the insights of art historian Alice DeLana, former Margaret Howe Wallace Class of '27 Teaching Chair in the Arts at Miss Porter's School, who will lecture about the Caribbean s artists and writers. AT SEA Saturday, February 21 During a relaxed day at sea attend morning lectures, observe as the ship s crew practices the art of trimming the sails by hand or perhaps settle into a comfortable deck chair with a favorite book. Tonight join the captain on Lido Deck for welcome cocktails, followed by dinner. GRENADA Monday, February 23 Arrive this afternoon in St. George s, with its medley of brightly colored houses set against lush green mountains. This is the Spice Island, where you can shop for locally produced nutmeg, cloves, cocoa, cinnamon, ginger and vanilla. After a visit to privately owned Sunnyside Gardens, we continue on to Tower Plantation House, a working fruit and spice plantation in the wooded hills above the capital. In the company of the owner Paul Slinger, we visit the historic house, walk in the manicured garden and relax with a traditional rum punch. Tonight gather on Lido Deck for dancing under the stars to the music of one of the Caribbean s best steel-drum bands. BEQUIA Tuesday, February 24 Anchor this afternoon off the low-lying island of Bequia. The largest of the Grenadines, Bequia has powdery white beaches and clear blue waters that are a snorkeler s paradise. Enjoy the beach and water sports in this beautiful setting where the distant hills are dotted with oleander, bougainvillea and hibiscus. TRINIDAD Sunday, February 22 Enjoy the gentle sun and quiet breezes during a leisurely morning at sea. In the afternoon we reach the island of Trinidad where we will visit two private gardens: Le Paradis, home to an extensive collection of rare orchids and bromeliads; and Santa Barbara Garden, set on a verdant hillside of tropical foliage and rare trees. MARTINIQUE Wednesday, February 25 Arrive in the colonial city of Fort de France for a morning visit to Les Jardins de Balata. A host of hummingbirds, including the purple-throated and greenthroated caribs, greet us at the entrance to this private botanical park. The creation of its owner, artist and landscape architect Jean-Philippe Thoze, Balata is the product of twenty years of collecting, including a spectacular variety of new and mature plants. Following an afternoon at sea, the evening festivities feature a tasting of fine rums from island distilleries. Famous Pitons on St. Lucia. ST. LUCIA Thursday, February 26 This morning Sea Cloud anchors in the Bay of Soufriere on the southwestern coast of St. Lucia. You may wish to swim at a beach set in the dramatic Anse des Pitons, between St. Lucia s towering twin peaks. Enjoy a lunch of Caribbean specialties at the renowned Dasheene Restaurant, which boasts spectacular views. In the early afternoon Sea Cloud sets sail for Barbados. BARBADOS 1 MIAMI Friday, February 27 Disembark this morning in Barbados and transfer to the airport for the return flights. n St. Nicholas Abbey. Tuesday, February 17 Upon arrival in Barbados, transfer to the oceanfront Hilton Hotel, where we stay for three nights. Wednesday, February 18 This morning visit Andromeda Gardens, which is managed by the Barbados National Trust (BNT). This fascinating collection of unusual plant specimens from around the world is nestled among streams, ponds and rocky outcroppings in the cliffs overlooking the sea. Continue to Codrington College, recognized as one of the most beautiful early 18th-century buildings and landscape designs in the Caribbean. Lunch and the afternoon are at leisure. This evening visit Fisherpond House, a lovely 300-yearold plantation house furnished with antiques and objets d'art. John Chandler, the owner, will guide us through the house and host us for our welcome dinner. Thursday, February 19 Orchid lovers will particularly enjoy our morning visit to Orchid World, owned and designed by English landscape architect Richard Coughlan. Following lunch we will visit St. Nicholas Abbey with its 17th-century façade, mahogany plantation and stunning views of the Atlantic Coast. Return to the hotel for an afternoon and dinner at leisure. Friday, February 20 The day begins with a specially arranged visit to Bush Hill, a BNT restoration project. George Washington and his brother Lawrence occupied the house for several months in Continue to Graeme Hall, a mangrove sanctuary where we will have an opportunity to bird watch. Lunch is at an elegant restaurant overlooking the Caribbean Sea. In the late afternoon, transfer to the pier in Bridgetown to embark Sea Cloud. 6 T E R M S & C O N D I T I O N S AIRFARE Specially negotiated round-trip non-refundable APEX Economy Class group will be offered for this program. Academic Arrangements Abroad will be pleased to assist with air travel arrangements. Passengers making individual flight arrangements may request individual transfers at a supplemental cost. Frequent flyer mileage is not accepted in conjunction with this program. PAYMENT SCHEDULE A deposit of $1,500 per person, payable to Academic Arrangements Abroad, of which $350 is non-refundable for administrative fees, is required with the reservation application. Final payment, by check only, must be received 120 days prior to departure. HEALTH All program participants must be in good health and fully able to participate in all tour activities. This program involves considerable walking over uneven terrain, climbing stairs and negotiating narrow passageways without handrails, as well as the use of accommodations and conveyances that are not handicapped accessible, including tenders. Any condition that may require assistance, special medical attention or other accommodation must be reported at the time of your reservation. PLEASE NOTE: There is no elevator aboard Sea Cloud. INSURANCE TRIP CANCELLATION / EMERGENCY MEDICAL EVACUATION / BAGGAGE / ACCIDENT AND SICKNESS INSURANCE PROTECTION IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. CANCELLATION PENALTIES ARE STRICTLY ENFORCED. CHANGES IN ITINERARY & COSTS The itinerary is subject to change at the discretion of Guild Hall and Academic Arrangements Abroad. All prices quoted are based on prevailing airfares, fuel prices and currency exchange rates in effect as of October 2008 and subject to change without notice. Deviations from the scheduled itinerary are at the expense of the individual. RESPONSIBILITY CLAUSE The participation of Guild Hall (GH) is limited to educational sponsorship of the program described in this brochure (The Program). Academic Arrangements Abroad (AAA) acts only as an agent for the participant with respect to transportation, accommodations and all other services, relating to The Program. AAA, GH and/or their agents assume no responsibility or liability for any act, error or omission, or for any injury, loss, accident, delay or irregularity which may be occasioned by reason of any defect in any aircraft, ship, train, bus or other carrier, or through neglect or default of any subcontractor or other third party, which may be used wholly or in part in the performance of their duty to the participants of The Program. The passage ticket issued by the carrier is the sole contract between the participant and the carrier. Nor will AAA or GH and/or their agents be responsible for loss, injury, damages or expenses to persons or property, due to illness, weather, strikes, local laws, hostilities, wars, terrorist acts, acts of nature or other such causes in connection with The Program or anything beyond their reasonable control. AAA is not responsible for transportation or other program delays and changes, nor additional expenses or loss of time that may be incurred. In the event it becomes necessary or advisable for the comfort or well-being of the participants, or for any reason whatsoever, to alter the itinerary at any time, without notice to the participants, such alterations will be made without penalty to AAA or GH. Additional expenses, if any, shall be borne by the participants. Baggage and personal effects are the sole responsibility of the participant at all times. AAA and GH reserve the right to accept or decline any person as a participant at any time, or to require any participant to withdraw from The Program at their own expense when such an action is determined by AAA or GH to be in the best interest of the participant s health and safety, or the general welfare of the other participants. CANCELLATION POLICY AAA must strictly adhere to its cancellation policy to offset costs incurred prior to the commencement of The Program, which may include but are not limited to: advance payments to land operators; ship charters; communication expenses; development/ promotional expenses and the loss of time that might have permitted resale of reserved space. All cancellations must be made in writing to the offices of AAA and are subject to a $350 non-refundable administrative fee. All refunds are limited to amounts actually received by AAA and are the sole responsibility of AAA; GH shall have no liability for refunds. At the time AAA receives written notification of cancellation, the following cancellation charges will apply: cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure, 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent of the program cost per person; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason. Air cancellation charges, if any, will be assessed in accordance with airline regulations. All group fare tickets must be issued no less than 30 days prior to departure. NOTE: Neither AAA nor GH shall be liable for any airline cancellation penalties incurred by the purchase of a non-refundable ticket. In the case of a cancellation due to shortage of participants, AAA will attempt to notify all participants at least 45 days prior to departure. However, AAA reserves the right to cancel The Program prior to departure for any reason and, in such case, reimbursement of refundable costs of the trip by AAA shall constitute full settlement with the participant. In the unlikely event that a dispute arises between a participant and AAA or GH, the following conditions will apply: (a) the dispute will be settled by binding arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association in New York, NY; (b) the dispute will be governed by New York Law; (c) the maximum amount of recovery to which a participant shall be entitled under any and all circumstances will be the sum of all monies actually received from the participant by AAA. The participant agrees that this is a fair and reasonable limitation on the damages, of any sort whatsoever, that a participant may suffer.
