5 CAMPAIGN CHAIR S MESSAGE I am humbled and honoured to be chairing United Way Winnipeg s 2017 campaign. In the 25 years I ve been involved, I ve seen first-hand how, together through United Way, Winnipeggers are making a meaningful difference for so many people in our community. As a wealth advisor, I see a lot of similarities between what United Way does and what I do. In my professional life, I recommend investments I believe will have the best value and returns. When it comes to investing in a stronger Winnipeg, my belief and money is on United Way s community fund. Last year, you helped hundreds of thousands of Winnipeggers change their lives. Over the next year, I commit to you that we will continue working together to achieve the goals set out in our three-year plan to help more children and families in Winnipeg than ever before. We know there are still kids and families struggling with a number of challenges and I know together we can reach them. Together we can also inspire more people and organizations to join us. We can, and must, seize the opportunity and the momentum to go further to create the Winnipeg we all want a Winnipeg where nobody is left behind. 7 CAMPAIGN CHAIR S AWARD 2016 Campaign Chair, Neil Besner, presents a Campaign Chair s Award at Celebration 2016 to MPI, represented by Ward Keith (l-r), and Employee Campaign Chairs Jeannette Wheeler and Chelsea Kroeker spotlight Manitoba Public Insurance The Workplace Campaign Chair s Award is the highest level of recognition a workplace can receive, showing a commitment to employee engagement and generosity. One of this year s recipients, Manitoba Public Insurance, is no stranger to this level of commitment. MPI loaned four employees to the Sponsored Executive Program in The Corporation s employee-driven campaign was the most successful in MPI history, with more than $500,000 raised a record year of giving that saw employee participation skyrocket. MPI employees attended province-wide campaign events, participated in United Way Days of Caring, and welcomed a series of speakers to share life-changing experiences. MPI is a workplace in which Ward Keith, Vice President, Loss Prevention & Communications and Executive Sponsor of the annual campaign, is proud to belong: We are so proud of all our employees for participating in this year s provincial campaign. 10 LIVING ON THE EDGE Living on the Edge Poverty Simulation A unique, interactive group experience that provides a glimpse into what life might be like for Winnipeg families struggling with poverty. Participants are placed in family units and given a summary of their financial situation. The two to three-hour simulation is divided into four short weeks during which families perform daily tasks like sending kids to school, accessing childcare and transportation, finding work, paying bills, visiting social services, buying groceries, cashing cheques and more. Afterwards, participants can share what they learned, and felt, during a facilitated debrief. 8 UNITED WAY SALUTE 2016

11 Great-West Life has been a partner in creating a better Winnipeg with United Way since They continue to show a real commitment to our community through not just their annual United Way campaign, but also through their involvement in community engagement and volunteer opportunities. Over 50 employees from Great-West Life took part in the Living on the Edge poverty simulation last year, helping foster a greater understanding of poverty and the lives of those it affects. This simulation showed me how people living in poverty must make complex and difficult decisions every day, said Mark Pomehichuk, 2016 Co-Chair, Great-West Life Campaign. I came away from the experience with a better understanding of poverty and how we need to support programs that remove barriers and create opportunities in our community. UNITED WAY SALUTE

24 LABOUR ENGAGEMENT spotlight UNIFOR Local 830 The importance of collective action working together to achieve a goal is something that both United Way and the Labour movement understand. Both groups know that more ideas and involvement can make less work for everyone, and improve results. It s in this spirit that active members of UNIFOR Local 830 have long been involved with the workplace campaign at Winpak felt like a good year to shake things up and look at different ways to reach all of the members on as many of the shifts as possible. With their employer s support Charlene Matheson, President of the local, worked with Trevor Champagne from the shop floor at Winpak. They arranged presentations for members, in as many departments as possible. With help from United Way staff, Sponsored Executives, and individual department managers, the group managed to meet with most of the unionized workers. This collective effort paid off with an increase in participation and further activities planned during It s just one more example that United really is the union way. 22 UNITED WAY SALUTE 2016

The 2016 Campaign started by integrating some of United Way s videos into regular weekly office meetings to increase general awareness about United Way, and the important role it plays as a community fund. Leaders and potential Leaders were invited to a breakfast presentation that was led by one of North West s Leadership donors. They learned about United Way from peers and from Steve Chipman, a leader in Winnipeg s business community. The breakfast was followed by peer-to-peer canvassing and a personal ask to pledge support to the United Way at the Leadership level. 34 GENNEXT The inaugural GenNext Summit brought almost 300 young leaders to the RBC Convention Centre in October to learn and share ideas for moving forward towards a more thriving Winnipeg. United Way Winnipeg and GenNext Winnipeg presented the inaugural GenNext Summit: Our City last October. The Summit brought together almost 300 of the next generation of Winnipeg s community leaders who are proud to be living in our city. This impactful full-day event featured distinguished speakers, cutting-edge panels and discussions to inspire attendees to take a leading role in strengthening our city. The Summit was an eye-opening experience of things that are happening right in front us in everyday life, said attendee Johann Kristjanson. Topics included reconciliation, homelessness, and mentorship, and focused on the role each of us can play in making a difference. A Red Table discussion allowed attendees to intimately discuss specific opportunities and make a personal plan to create a better Winnipeg together by connecting with United Way agencies in need of volunteers. In December, the GenNext workplace chapters at PwC, Taylor McCaffrey and Payworks collected suits and other clothing accessories to support clients of Opportunities for Employment to overcome barriers in their job search. When we give a little time and energy to helping the agencies that serve so many people in such important ways whether it s a Collection Drive or some sweat equity through a Day of Caring it ripples through our community in such positive ways. Last year, teams of caring people from Winnipeg Airports Authority put in 80 volunteer hours to make a real difference in our community during three Days of Caring. Days of Caring provide our team a tangible way of reflecting Winnipeg Airports Authority s purpose of being here to serve, serving even those with whom we may not have regular contact, said Barry Rempel, President & CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority.
