2 is the time to reserve your attendance Now for the 2015 Investiture weekend of The Order of Saint Joachim, this year taking place in the national capital of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario. This event coincides with the 260 th Anniversary of the founding of our Order on June 20 th, In celebration of one of our more famous confreres, Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, our Friday night Meet and Greet and Dinner will be held at HMCS Bytown, the Royal Canadian Navy Officers Mess. Saturday morning commences with an optional tour of Rideau Hall. This has been the home of every Governor General since Confederation. It is also one of the official residences of the Royal Family when they are in Ottawa. The centre-point of the weekend will be of course the Investiture, this year celebrated at one of the oldest Anglican churches in Ottawa, The Church of St. John the Evangelist. The Grand Master s Gala Investiture Dinner will take place in the Army Officers Mess, directly across from St. John the Evangelist. Our choice of host hotel for 2015 is the historic Lord Elgin Hotel, located downtown on Elgin Street, just minutes from many attractions and equally close and within easy walking distance to both the Messes and the Church. All the information you need to plan your weekend is available in this package. Bytown Wardroom The Naval Officers' Mess Ottawa 78 Lisgar St, Ottawa, Ontario H.M.C.S. BYTOWN Wardroom is a private Naval Officers' Mess, ideally located in downtown Ottawa, just a five minute walk from National Defence Headquarters at 101 Colonel By Drive and 10 minutes from either Parliament Hill or the University of Ottawa. The H.M.C.S. BYTOWN Wardroom also has an interesting history. The original building was built in 1896, and was a family residence until Interestingly enough, from 1910 to the early years of World War II, officers serving at Naval Service Headquarters, Ottawa did not have an Officers' Mess. Thus, in 1943 steps were taken by the then Captain H.G. DeWolf, RCN, to establish a unique Naval Officers' Mess in the nation capitol. The property was eventually acquired from the residing family. By letters patent dated 12 May 1943, a non-profit corporation was established and the Naval Officer s Mess, H.M.C.S. Bytown, was finally established. 4 Saturday Morning Event, June 20, 2015 Tour of the Governor General of Canada Official Residence Rideau Hall 1 Sussex Dr. Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Rideau Hall is the official residence and workplace of every Governor General of Canada since This national historic site, situated in an idyllic 79-acre urban oasis, is located only a few minutes from downtown Ottawa and Gatineau. Thomas MacKay built the original stone villa in 1838, as a home for his family, which now forms the main part of the official residence. MacKay was a stonemason and contractor who built the entrance locks of the Rideau Canal and the mills at Rideau Falls, the landmark after which Rideau Hall was named. It has been home to every governor general since Confederation. In 1865, the house was leased to the Canadian government as a residence for The Viscount Monck, 21st Governor General of British North America, who became Canada's first governor general. Bytown had been renamed Ottawa and was chosen by Queen Victoria to become the new capital of the province of Canada. That same year, Lord Monck added a long, two-storey wing that was meant to resemble his beloved Québec City residence, Spencer Wood (which was renamed Bois-de-Coulonge in 1950). 5 Saturday Afternoon June 20, 2015 Investiture Ceremony - Arrive 4:00 PM for a 4:30 PM Commencement 154 Somerset Street West, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Anglican Church of St. John the Evangelist Ottawa In 1853, the Duke of Newcastle, in a letter to the Earl of Elgin, then Governor General of the Canada s, deeded a piece of land on the corner of Sussex Drive and Mackenzie Street for the construction of a chapel for Anglican soldiers stationed in Bytown. In 1861, a small school and chapel of ease was built, under the direction of the parish of Christ Church. Dr. Lauder was the first Incumbent of this house of God. By 1871, the chapel of ease was named St John s and Bishop John Lewis wished to establish it as the pro-cathedral of the Diocese of Ontario. St. John s soon became known as The Bishop s Chapel, a name it was to have until In that year, when the congregation of goodly and godly people was sufficiently large, the Parish Church of St. John the Evangelist was consecrated and the Reverend H. Pollard was installed as the first Rector. The interior construction of the building is unique in that it is entirely of wood, although the outer walls are stone and brick. The sombre interior of the church accentuates the beauty of the many stained-glass windows. Above the Elgin Street, entrance is the Ascension window. It complements the window above the main altar that depicts the life of Christ. Each of the windows in the church has been given by parishioners as a thank offering and they range in age from the Angel (1891) right up to Each speaks of the mystery and joy of Christ and of the church's commissioning to be Christ's ministers and disciples. The organ, located in the northeast corner of the church, was built in 1977 by Gabriel Kney of London, Ontario. It contains some 2,000 hand-made pipes, including a unique rank of fanfare trumpets that project horizontally into the church. Under the authority of the Chief of Defence Staff, the Army Headquarters Officers' Mess continued under the name of Army Officers' Mess, simply referred to "the Mess".
