1 2015 Opportunities for Adventure Connecticut Rivers Council Boy Scouts of America
2 Dear Parent, What are your plans for your son this summer? When you look out your window it is hard to believe that the summer is just a few short months away. At the Connecticut Rivers Council we have the same thoughts, however we are getting ready for an exciting summer camp full of adventure for your son in Most of the staff has been hired, new program equipment has been ordered and new programs are being finalized. We take great pride in our camps not only in the outstanding program that is offered, but also the safe environment that the programs are delivered. We consistently have met and exceeded the not only the Program, Health and Safety requirements of the State of Connecticut as well as the National Council, Boy Scouts of America, but also the expectation of the Campers in camp, the leaders who volunteer their time to come to camp and the parents of the Scouts. For over 100 years Scouts have been going to summer camp, learning new skills, meeting new friends, and developing leadership skills that have had a positive impact as they become adults. However there have been some recent studies done on summer learning loss when they are not involved in high quality programs with opportunities for skill building. As a result, young people can forget up to 2 months of academic instruction, particularly in the areas of reading and math when they are not in school. Our camps provide the opportunity to reduce summer learning loss in an expanded learning environment where Scouts are engaged physically and mentally. The following pages have all the information about our camp programs from Cub Scout Day Camps to Boy Scout Specialty weeks and everything in between. We will ask the question we started with: What are your plans for next summer? Dan Albert Camping Committee Chairman Steven Smith Scout Executive
3 THE ADVENTURE BEGINS WITH DAY CAMP In 2015 Cub Scouts will Take Flight With adventures at the Connecticut Rivers Council Day Camps CUB SCOUT DAY CAMP: Come ready to explore the outdoors, learn new skills, and build your own adventure. Camps are held in every district. With locations spread throughout the state, there is sure to be a Day Camp close to you. The Day Camp program is designed to be exciting and challenging for all ages; Tiger Cubs to Webelos. Each camp is different, depending upon location, Cub Scouts can expect to participate in activities that relate to our Take Flight! theme. They will learn about things that fly in nature, build things that fly in crafts, and make things fly with bows and arrows, BB guns, or slingshots. If the location allows there will be fishing and swimming. Simply put, Cub Scout Day Camp will provide every Scout a day filled with activities so they return home exhausted each afternoon. Bring your den, pack, parent, or guardian and join other Cub Scouts from across Connecticut for fun activities and adventures. Scouts may attend any Day Camp being offered. All Day Camps follow BSA health and safety guidelines and are licensed to operate and inspected by the Connecticut Office of Early Childhood. Qualified first aid personnel are on site at all times. 4 THE ADVENTURE Continues WITH RESIDENT CAMP RESIDENT CAMP: is the perfect opportunity for Cub Scouts to enjoy overnight camping! This full week program will allow Cub Scouts to develop their skills in swimming, identifying plants and animals, and allow them to learn how to use bows and arrows, and BB guns responsibly. MINI WEEK CAMP: is an introductory experience of two or three nights, which is perfect for a young boy s first venture away from home. Mini week camps are designed for first through third graders. Webelos are welcome to attend our mini week programs, however they are more likely to enjoy Resident Camp. At both programs, Cub Scout leaders and parents find activities and themes well suited to their children. Your son will laugh as camp counselors go to great lengths to bring weekly themes to life through skits and activities. With the Scout Oath and Law as their guide, our staff are role models and are looked up to by our campers! Cub Scout Resident Camp promises days of fun and adventure for boys. Parents and Leaders are encouraged to attend with their Scout. 6 CAMP MATTATUCK 2015 BOY SCOUT RESIDENT CAMP DATES: July 5-11, July 12-18, July 19-25, July 26-August 1, August 2-8 Have you ever been launched into the air by a Blob and land with a big splash in the water. Try the Mountain Bikes, BMX bikes and new Mountain Boards. The Bouldering wall is 70 feet long and has a challenge for everyone. Welding and the new Blacksmithing program are waiting for you. Spar Pole Climbing, White water Tubing and Rock Climbing at the Whitestone Cliffs are waiting for your older scouts. Try the Water Dunk at the new Archery range. It is the most extensive in the Northeast. Walk across the Blueberry Lily pads or try the Standup Paddleboards. How about an Eskimo roll in a Kayak. Well-designed camp sites with in- site hot showers are very popular. A world class COPE course and the most famous Climbing Tower are some of the adventures that await you at Camp Mattatuck in its 76th year. The food is absolutely great and plentiful! The highly dedicated camp staff work with you and your scouts on First Class skills in small unit based groups. There are 60 merit badge sessions offered. But we are not a Merit Badge factory. The schedule is built so that Scouts have time to enjoy themselves at a wide variety of activities such as Life size Chess and Jenga. Catch a 24 Largemouth Bass or challenge your friends at Trial by Fire in the Scoutcraft area. Scouts can attend camp with their troop or come as a Provisional Scout and stay with scouts and leaders from another troop. Make sure that Camp Mattatuck is in your summer camp schedule. 7 June Norcross Webster 2015 BOY SCOUT RESIDENT CAMP DATES: June 28-July 4, July 5-11, July 12-18, July 19-25, July 26-August 1, August 2-8 Webster INNOVATION & EXCITEMENT: You can t describe June Norcross Webster Scout Reservation without them. Scouts are changing and JNW is evolving with them. In the morning one Scout can satisfy his inner nerd at Robotics and Chess Merit Badge then get his thrills during the afternoon ATV session. Another Scout can do Welding, Blacksmithing, Swimming and Small Boat Sailing. And come back in weeks 6 & 7 to attend any of the 9 t specialty camps. If your Scout has an interest they want to explore, JNW is the place to craft a program that suits them. The program at JNW truly challenges Scouts at any age with nearly 60 merit badges, to hone marksmanship skills or to head into the lake for some swimming, boating, or a spirited game of Watermelon water polo. Scouts attending without their Troop join the Thunderbirds! (woop, woop) and set off on a week of new friendships and challenges during mountain bike rides, an overnight trek to the Outpost or during lunch on the JNW Dining Hall deck. The staff at JNW recognizes that while Scouts are changing, the values and mission of Scouting is not. JNW epitomizes Baden Powell s beliefs and promises that the program here will help each Scout develop skills that will last a lifetime.
