Cub Day Camp 2015 Take Flight

Dear Cub Scout Parent, Welcome to the 2015 Cub Scout Day Camp at Camp Josepho! We are thrilled this year to offer a Cub Scout program that is bigger and better than ever before. We pride ourselves at Camp Josepho for combining the best of the outdoor camping experience with new and exciting developments in technology and entertainment. Thanks to a bevy of camp visitors that will rotate around the camp theme of Take Flight we will bring in professional actors, stunt performers, and aviation experts to work with Cub Scouts in their own deep space adventure. We believe that summer camp should transport a camper to another world. The world that we will transport you to in this camp is a world far, far away, another planet, perhaps another galaxy! In this guide you will find all of the information you need as you prepare to send your Cub Scout to camp. Remember that Cub Scout Day Camp involves the parents every step of the way. So don t forget to look at the Parent Participation section of this guide and attend one of our two pre-camp parent meetings on Saturday, June 6 th at 10am or Monday, June 8th th at 6:30pm. Both will take place at the Westside office: National Blvd. and take approximately 1 hour. Family night, the night before camp wraps up, is an excellent way to make Cub Day Camp an event for the whole family. Bring everyone on the second to last evening of camp for a Barbecue and Campfire. Each week of Camp follows a different theme, meaning that your son can pursue his exact area of interest in one of our sessions or attend both without getting bored. See what theme your week of camp is and remember that you can bring costumes or props (no weapons) with your den to add to the festive aura of the whole camp. Remember, nothing makes a Cub Scout s day like an adult s enthusiasm! Week 1 Take Flight : Cubs will learn about aviation, rockets, planes, and maybe even a spaceship. Scouts may take on the role of an astronaut, pilot, engineer, rocket scientist, or the greatest captain since James T. Kirk. They will participate in hands-on arts and crafts for creating their own costume embellishments, learn the science of aerospace, and revisit camping classics like BB Guns and Archery with a twist. Week 2 Escape from Planet Josepho! : Everything from defending your space station from marauding aliens, to building a rocket that will soar from the depths of the Josepho crater, we will covered in our second week. Scouts will learn from the best; aerospace engineers, stunt performers, and science fiction storytellers. Please note, there is a Talent Release form, which we will need in order for your son to appear in any pictures or video shots in camp. Thank you for choosing Camp Josepho, we are thrilled to host you and your scouts in what we hope will be the most exciting roster of programs that this camp has ever seen! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call Joe Pizzo at x181. Sincerely, Joe Pizzo and TBA Camp Director and Program Director

Camp Josepho Mission The Western Los Angeles County Council Camping Department believes creating a world in which people make moral and ethical decisions. We believe that through outdoor adventure programs that are guided by the aims and methods of Scouting, we can influence young people over the course of their lifetime. Camp Josepho, which is at the intersection of technology and arts education in Scouting, addresses the wider goals of Scouting through Cub Scout and Boy Scout Programs that integrate Scouting values with creative enterprise. Getting To Camp Driving Camp Josepho is located at 3000 Rustic Canyon Rd, Pacific Palisades, CA From Sunset Boulevard, turn north on Capri Drive. You will get to a round-about. Take it around until you find Capri Drive again, it will be a near straight continuation. Stay on Capri Drive until the end and turn left onto Casale Road. Casale will curve around the hill and turn into a dirt road. Josepho s main road into camp is considered a Fire Road and is open to hikers and bikers, as well as the normal flow of traffic. Most areas of the road are one-lane and this makes driving safely extremely important. THE SPEED LIMIT ON THE ROAD IS 5MPH. Please, be aware of the other traffic on the roads and we suggest carpooling to limit the number of vehicles coming into camp. When confronting another vehicle going the opposite direction, be advised there are narrow shoulders to allow the cars to pass but take your time. We will attempt to limit this difficulty by assigning times to enter and exit camp, so please enter during the assigned enter times and wait to leave until the assigned exit time to reduce congestion. The enter times for check-in are from 8:00am-8:45am and the exit time is at 9:00am. And enter times for the afternoon are 4:00pm-4:30pm with a 4:45pm exit time. The front gate requires a numerical code to allow access. This code will be given at the June pre-camp parent meetings and another reminder will be sent shortly before arriving to camp. Be sure to give this code to any drivers with your Pack who will be attending. Shuttle There is a shuttle service available to campers for $50/week or $100 for 2 weeks and is strongly recommended to reduce traffic on the fire road. Shuttles will pick up from four locations on the Westside, you can see the routes and pickup times here. (Note: Shuttles for the last day depart from camp at 12:00 noon.) Parking In accordance with BSA policy and safety regulations, PERSONAL VEHICLES ARE NEVER PERMITTED IN CAMP BEYOND THE DESIGNATED PARKING AREA. However, a handicap accessible pass will be provided upon request at the Admin Area. The parking lot is clearly marked and just inside the camp entrance. Be sure to always follow the instructions given at camp while parking and back-in your vehicle to comply with the fire code. Only emergency and maintenance vehicles will be allowed to park outside of the designated parking area and all others will be immediately towed. These policies are for the safety of all campers. Please make sure parents who might be visiting camp during the week are aware of these important policies. We appreciate your cooperation in parking only in designated areas. Upon arrival, the camp staff will help guide you through the check-in procedure. Check-In Procedures Our friendly staff will greet you as you arrive in the parking lot and point you towards the check in area. Camp begins at 9am on all days of camp though you may arrive earlier as per the drive-in schedule. Please note that the first

day of check-in will require more time if you do not turn in the forms and documents at either of the June parent meetings. The check-in will only occur on the first day of camp ONLY and check-in on subsequent days will be much easier and less time intensive. Assemble your Den/Pack at the parade grounds. One adult leader in charge should proceed to the Admin Area to submit the needed forms and any payments due. Any late arrivals should park in the parking lot and find a staff member in the lodge for check-in and a camp ID bracelet and/or t-shirt. When checking in you MUST have the following items (or have already turned them in at meeting or to joseph.pizzo@scouting.org): Annual Health & Medical Form (parts A, B) For adult volunteers and campers Food Allergy Survey IF applicable for adult volunteers and campers--submitted electronically PROOF of Youth Protection For adult volunteers Family BBQ Meal Reservation Form One per household Talent Release Form For adult volunteers and campers Parental Firearms Permission and Release (Parts A, B, C and D) One per camper Pick-up Authorization Form One per camper (Two if attending both sessions) At Camp PACK LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES In accordance with BSA Youth Protection policies, there must be one adult leader for every five boys, one adult partner for each Tiger Cub, and a minimum of two leaders for each unit. Please be sure that all visitors and new adults arriving at camp check in with our camp staff in the Malibu Lodge to receive their ID bracelets. We ask that everyone clean up at meal times and in program areas. This is a great service to camp. Camp T-Shirts Each camper will receive a Camper T-Shirt with their registration and will have the option to purchase more. The shirts serve as a safety measure and allow us to identify campers. Please make sure campers wear their t-shirt every day. Adults will receive a shirt only if they volunteer for the entire week, otherwise they will receive visitor wristbands to identify them. Smoking and Alcohol Camp Josepho is a non-smoking facility. Smoking or tobacco use in front of any camper, leader, or staff member is strictly prohibited. Alcoholic beverages are never permitted on any Boy Scout property. Please help the camp enforce these rules by making sure all leaders and parents in your Pack are aware of this policy. Homesickness While most boys find themselves too busy with the fun and adventure of camp, homesickness can be a reality for Scouts who are new to the outdoors and unfamiliar with being away from home. We encourage every boy who experience homesickness to stay at camp, as overcoming homesickness often results in a strong sense of pride and achievement.

We have found that one of the strongest proponents of homesickness is the cell phone. Even though cell phones do not usually work at camp, Leaders are strongly discouraged from allowing boys to use cell phones to call home. When a boy sees another boy calling, he will usually feel the need to call home himself. Parents should talk to their sons before he comes to camp about his feelings about leaving home, and make a plan on how to handle homesickness. Emergency Procedures An air-horn system can be heard throughout camp to alert campers and staff of an emergency. Each camping area has an air-horn hanging near the entrance for emergency use by adults only. In the case of an emergency, staff is trained to respond only to the Camp Director, or in his absence, his designee. The entire camp will participate in an emergency drill and learn what to do in the case of a fire, earthquake, or other emergency. We ask that each adult leader knows where the air horn is in case of an emergency and to adhere only to the instructions given by the camp staff. If there is an injury that is not life threatening, do not call 911 unless given instruction by the Camp Director. Any staff member can notify the camp director and camp medic with a radio or in their assigned areas. The emergency telephone number at Camp Josepho is (310) This phone is staffed during program hours. Boys can make emergency outgoing calls when accompanied by one of their adult leaders. Please note that cell phones do not generally work while in camp. What to Bring PLEASE BRING: ALL FORMS if not previously submitted at parent meeting or electronically to CampJosepho@scouting.org Personal medications Towel Day pack (backpack) Personal toiletries Boots/shoes (suitable for hiking) Camp T-Shirt Swimsuit LEADERS ALSO BRING: Handbooks and advancement guides A watch RECOMMENDED ITEMS: Sunscreen Bug repellent Canteen or water bottle Sunglasses Hat with visor Spending money for the Trading Post Costumes and Props (Medieval themed! No weapons) PROHIBITED IN CAMP: Personal radio, IPod, Walkman, PSP, Nintendo, DS, or other such electronic devices Televisions Firearms or bows

Alcoholic beverages Fireworks Sheath knives or knives with a blade over four inches Liquid fuel Pre-Camp Administration Medical Form All campers and adults must bring a completed Annual Health and Medical Form to camp. Note Parts A & B are required. Make a copy of all medical forms for future use. A parent or guardian must sign all Cub Scouts Health and Medical Forms and be dated within a year prior to camp. Prescription and non-prescription medication: Medications, prescriptions and non-prescriptions brought to camp by campers and leaders are REQUIRED to be secured and locked in the Camp s Health Lodge, although a day s dosage may be carried by the adult accompanying the Scout. This may seem too strict for over the counter medication; however, if a child consumes medication that is not meant for them, it has deadly potential. There will be certain exceptions for life saving medications to be carried at camp (ie. emergency inhaler or epinephrine pen) This decision will be made during the medical exam given by our health officers. Medications will be available for distribution following each meal or at other times arranged with the health officer. MEDICATION MUST BE IN THE ORIGINAL CONTAINER and contain the following information: 1. Camper s Name 4. Date Prescribed 2. Name of Prescribing Physician 5. Name of Medication 3. Prescription Number 6. Directions for Use We have a qualified medical staff that is on duty at all times. A re-check of your medical form is required for all campers on the first day of Summer Camp. Special Diet Form Please only submit this form if you have a special food allergy or dietary need. Regular eaters need not submit. Please know which session you are registered to attend before submitting. Youth Protection All Adult Volunteers must take Youth Protection Training before camp you do not need to be a registered member of the BSA to take this training and it is free. The protection and privacy of our campers is taken very seriously at Camp Josepho. All adult leaders and camp staff must follow BSA Youth Protection guidelines. Bathroom facilities are marked to denote separate youth and adult facilities. Youth should not enter the adult facilities and adult should not enter youth facilities. You may take Youth Protection online at or by checking out the DVD from the Anna Ruggieri Service Center. Day Camp Parent Participation The Cub Scout Day Camp at Josepho is unique in that we hire a professional staff to coordinate activities and administration of Day Camp. However, we still rely heavily on the help of volunteers to maintain the innovative program

that we offer and to keep our price much lower than comparable summer camps. One parent is asked to volunteer for at least one day while their son is at Day Camp. We need volunteers for: Den Leaders (lead a group of Scouts and parents from activity to activity) Additional Tasks/Activity Help: Let us know if you have an area of expertise or special skill that might apply to the theme of camp. If it is impossible to volunteer for a day during the week, please contact the us at Joseph.pizzo@scouting.org. If you didn t include your availability and options on our online registration, please CampJosepho@scouting.org with your availability during your child s session(s). Remember, your participation will improve your son s experience at camp! We will try to have shifts filled after the parent meetings on June 6 h and June 8 th. Family BBQ and Last Day of Camp Family Night is an opportunity for the entire family to join their Cub Scout and see what Day Camp is all about. On the Thursday night before the last day of camp, parents can arrive at 4:30pm for a barbecue, and stay for the campfire at 6:00pm. Activities for the night will end at 7:00pm. If your family is planning to join us for dinner, please complete The Family Night Meal Reservation Form (available at the end of this packet) and turn it in with the full payment upon check-in at camp on the first day. Please note: The last day of camp is a half day and camp will conclude at 12:00pm. Drive-in times for the last day of camp is from 11:00am - 11:45am. The exit/drive-out time is 12:00pm. Visitors, Late Arrivals and Early Release All campers, parents, and leaders arriving at camp at some time other than check-in must register at the Camp Office or with a staff member and get a camp ID bracelet and/or t-shirt. It is also important that any leader being replaced checks out. We must know who is in camp at all times. Everyone in camp will be given an ID bracelet and/or t-shirt to be worn at all times for identification purposes. All visitors must sign in and sign out with a camp staff member and get a camp ID bracelet. Any visitor who has not registered may be asked to leave camp. It is important for safety that we know who is visiting our camp and when. Visitors who intend to eat a meal at camp must purchase a meal ticket at the Camp Office. Meal tickets for lunch are $6. While we encourage every boy to experience Summer Camp in its entirety, any child that needs to be released early must have an Early Release Form (found in Part B of the Medical Form and our additional form at the bottom of this packet) filed at the beginning of camp. We ask that you fill out our Pick-up Authorization Form at the end of this packet because we find it most efficient to have this immediately on hand in our admin office. This is to maintain camper s security and will be strictly followed. If there is to be an alteration to the submitted schedule or emergency release then a parent or guardian must be the person picking up the child and must show a picture ID. Any alternative or emergency release should be made known to the Camp Director as soon as possible and before the youth leaves the camp.
