1 2017 CAMP WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS O=Older Y=Younger Classes listed below are one hour classes for two days unless specified otherwise. Older is classified as seventh grade and above. Please return registration forms into the Extension Office early to ensure first choice workshop selections. Exploring Science and Connecting to Nature Forestry Adventure Stream Exploration Water Adventure Outdoor Survival Skills (O+Y) Campers will work with a professional to learn about West Virginia trees, tree measurement, invasive species and have fun in nature. (O+Y) Get ready to explore what lies below the water s surface. Campers will explore the stream with professionals and learn about stream life and the macroinvertebrates that live in them. Bring old shoes that can get wet. (limited to 12) (O+Y) Campers will work with professionals to learn about the physical parts of the stream, the biology and chemistry of the stream, and participants will become scientists by participating in chemistry experiments to see what we can t be seen with the naked eye in the stream. Bring old shoes that can get wet. (Double Workshop) (O+Y) This class will focus on educational lessons that can be utilized in the great outdoors. Campers will work one on one with professionals to learn fire building, shelter building, Leave no Trace, 10 Essentials to Surviving in Nature, and water quality lessons. Cost: $ H Robotics (O+Y) Campers will learn the basics of robotics and computer science through the construction and programming of NXT and WeDo robots. Rockets to the Rescue and Stomp Rockets Simple Circuits (O+Y) Campers will build rockets to a distant Island ravaged by a tsunami. On day two campers will study forces and Newton s Laws while making propel rockets (O+Y) Youth learn the basics of circuitry and simple electronics while building scribble bots, paper circuits and sewing their own light-up jewelry. Nanoscience Engineering Challenge (O+Y) Youth investigate the nanoscale using hands-on activities with hydrophobic sand, ferrofluids, thin films, and butterfly wings. (O+Y) Learn how to build various weight-bearing structures using every day materials. Cost: $3.00 Backyard Woodworking (O&Y) Campers will create a wooden home for your backyard visitors. $10.00 Camp Weird Science (O+Y) Work with a professional to engage in some hands-on science experiments that are messy and fun...stuff that your mom won t let you do at home! Cost: $5.00

2 4-H Fab Lab (O&Y) Youth use design based learning to fabricate fabulous engineering creations. Activities include solar pizza ovens, spaghetti towers and marshmallow catapults. Outdoor (O+Y) Cooking in the wild of 4-H Camp... Learn great campfire cooking Cooking techniques and enjoy sampling your creations! Cost: $6.00 Fishing Nature Hike Horticulture (O+Y) Bait that hook and haul in a big one! Campers will have the opportunity to increase their fishing knowledge and go fishing in the South Branch of the Potomac. Campers need to bring their own equipment to be locked up when not in use (no knives). Bring shoes that can get wet. A fishing license is required for those 15 and older. (Double Workshop) Cost: $1.00 (O+Y) Limited to 12 participants. Get ready to explore nature! Campers will enjoy a hike in the woods to a nearby waterfall with adults. In order to participate, participants must have socks and appropriate foot wear for hiking in the woods. Younger campers must be prepared to walk a long distance and be able to keep up with the group. (Double workshop) (O+Y) 4-H members will have fun learning about different plants, fruits, vegetables, and trees with our 4-H horticulture coach. Members will also learn which features and characteristics to look for when selecting quality plant items. Learn how to be a member of Hampshire County s 4-H horticulture judging team. Terrariums Campfire Cooking Exploring the Science of Soil (O+Y) Create your very own plant habitat in a glass container using potting soil, charcoal, rocks, and plants. Containers will be stored in a safe place until the close of camp. Cost: $15.00 (O+Y) Cooking over the open fire at 4-H Camp... Have fun learning some traditional Appalachian recipes and enjoy tasting your homemade creations. Take recipes home to share and prepare for family members. Cost: $6.00 (O+Y) Soil is the foundation for life. It acts as a filter to protect the quality of water, air and supports growth of plants and animals. During this workshop, you will discover the basics of soil science and the characteristics of healthy soil. Through hands-on activities you will learn about soil composition, types and qualities. Master Gardening 101 (O&Y) Campers will learn about various gardening topics. Together we will discover where our food comes from. We will taste fresh vegetables straight from the garden, learn about worms, insects and pollinators, and explore our natural environment in hands-on science based learning. Soccer Clinic Zumba Fun Teen Cuisine Pancake Fun Yoga at Camp (O+Y) Come prepared to learn skills and techniques to improve your game. Have fun playing with fellow 4-H'ers. Participants must have shin guards to participate. Campers are asked to bring their own soccer ball if they own one. (O+Y) Zumba is a combination of dance and fitness moves done to a variety of mostly Latin rhythms including salsa, merengue, cha-cha, reggaeton, bachata and more! Get ready to have fun participating in a heart pumping beat that is sure to offer lots of fun with friends! Cost: $5.00 (O) Have fun learning about nutrition while creating recipes to share with friends and family. (O+Y) Oh the many varieties of pancakes... Get creative with pancakes. Have fun exploring a variety of pancake recipes and toppings at camp. Take home recipes to share with the whole family! Cost: $5.00 (O+Y) Camper will learn and practice multiple yoga techniques. Learn the health benefits of participating in yoga. Cost: $5.00 Exploring Hands-on Creativity at 4-H Camp 4-H Clover String Art (O) Make a creative 4-H clover by wrapping colored string through hammered nails to make a geometric design. Cost: $5.00 Acrylic Painting on Canvas Balloon Painting Tribal Nametags (O) Create your masterpiece on canvas using acrylic paint. Campers will paint on an 8x10 canvas. Campers should wear clothing that can get dirty or bring an over shirt/apron to wear over clothing. Cost: $10.00 (O+Y) Have fun and be creative using balloons and paint to create your own colorful masterpieces. Cost: $2.00 (O) Create your own 4-H camp nametag based on your tribe. Nametags can be used year after year at state and local 4-H camps and events. Cost: $1.00

This is a program for campers, 16 years of age, who are looking for a completely unique camp experience! Classes will be spent conducting in-depth team building and leadership activities that are directly applicable to pursuits in school, college and careers. This exciting experience will allow participants to work closely with their peer group, while developing valuable skills and lifelong friendships. (Y) Campers in the Level 1 class participate in a variety of games and fun group initiatives designed to develop trust and teamwork. Exploring Our World at 4-H Camp Bread Making Pinata Fun (O+Y) Explore the world of bread making. This hands-on workshop will offer campers an opportunity to learn about and make varieties of bread (Double Workshop.) Cost: $4.00 (O+Y) Have fun creating your own party piñata. Pinatas are used in many countries as part of birthday parties and other celebrations. Cost:.50 Native American Dreamcatcher Mexican Nearikas Yarn Painting (O+Y) Native Americans believed that dream catchers would protect them from their bad dreams. Make your very own dream catcher to take home Cost: $5.00 (O+Y) One of the most colorful crafts of Mexico Nearika is a sacred form of art and a means of storytelling used by the Huichol Indian People. Campers will use yarn to create their own pictures and tell their own stories.
