1 Camp Adventure! 2018 Handbook Welcome to Camp Adventure! Established 4 years ago, Camp Adventure is the camp for summer fun in Houston that combines exciting STEAM activities with art, crafts and games with the joys of summer camp! In partnership with the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation and the Houston Area Urban League, the back-to-back, two-week long camps will have a variety of interactive activities that will keep brain synapses firing and ensure that children have a fun and engaging experience this summer. We are certain that Camp Adventure will be an exciting and unique experience for all campers to remember for years to come! With engineering projects, hands-on science experiments, games, songs, music, and storytelling there will never be a dull moment. What Can I Expect? Who is eligible? All students who will be in Kindergarten through 5th grade in that are currently enrolled in the Houston Independent School District can register to attend Camp Adventure. How much does it cost? There are no costs or fees associated with Camp Adventure. It is free to register campers, and all activities are free of charge thanks to the generous sponsors listed below. What can campers expect? Each day at camp is full of adventure! A typical day at camp will be full of icebreakers, arts and crafts, games and fitness, hands on science, books, songs, music, cooking classes, music classes, theatre workshops, special events or a field trip. Collaboration Our classrooms, or cabins, will be where campers will experience several of the camp activities. Many of the activities will involve creative collaboration and working in groups, so campers will be able to meet and make friends from all over the city of Houston.

2 Camp Adventure Days and Times Camp Operating Days and Hours If you are enrolled in session 1, Camp Adventure will be at Atherton Elementary from Monday, July 9 to Thursday, July 19 (no camp on Fridays). If you are enrolled in session 2, Camp Adventure will be held at Codwell or Thompson Elementary from Monday, July 23 to Thursday, August 2 (no camp on Fridays). Campers may participate in ONE camping session but not both. Camp Daily Schedule NOTE: Please arrive minutes early on the first day of camp to fill out any necessary paperwork and waivers. 7:30 8:00 am: Camper drop off and breakfast 8:00 2:00 pm: STEM experiments, arts, music and cooking workshops and activities, lunch, games, arts and crafts 2:00 3:00 pm: Campfire time 3:00 pm: Pick up

3 Coming to Camp Dropping Off Campers Check in: Camp Adventure asks that all campers are to be signed in by an adult by 7:45 am so they can enjoy camp breakfast and start their camp activities on time with the rest of the campers. Picking Up Campers Sign Out: Camp Adventure asks that all campers are to be signed out by an adult on their designated pick up sheet no later than 3:30 pm. If your camper is not picked up by 3:45 pm, the following will happen: All phone numbers we have on file for your child will be called. If no contact can be made, we will continually assure the child that everything is okay. Your child will never be left alone. We will notify the Camp Director to determine the appropriate next steps.

4 What to bring to Camp Adventure Food Lunch: We will be serving a nutritional lunch every day of camp but you are welcome to bring your own lunch if you would like. If your camper has a food allergy, please make sure that allergy is communicated to the camp director so we can make sure your camper has an allergy free lunch. Snack: We will be providing snacks daily, so you do not need to send snacks with your camper unless they have a food allergy. Clothing Clothing: Campers will be participating in a variety of outdoor and other physical activities and it is highly recommended that campers wear clothes that they can move in and closed toed shoes for safety reasons. Campers are encouraged to wear their camp shirts on the last day of camp for the field trip to the Children s Museum. Field Trip to the Children s Museum: On the last day of camp, all campers will be taking a field trip to the Children s Museum. On this day, if campers arrive after 8:15 am they risk missing the field trip. On this day, if campers arrive after 8:15 am they risk missing the field trip. We ask that all children wear their Camp Adventure shirts to show their camp spirit! Medications Camp Adventure prefers that all necessary medications be administered at home before being dropped off at camp. However, in the case of special circumstances, all prescribed medication must be in the original container that identified the prescribing physician, the name of the medication, the dosage, and the frequency of the administration. All medication, will be stored in a secure location with the camp nurse. Under no circumstances should medication be packed in backpack or in lunch. Medication must be given directly to staff at drop-off. Leave it at Home Camp Adventure is not responsible for any valuables. Please make sure your child leaves any toys, electronics or valuables at home. If campers are found with these items, they will be asked to put them away. Cell phones are permitted at camp but should be turned off and put away. At camp, we make sure our day is packed full of fun and exciting activities and these personal items can be a distraction.

5 Camper Expectations Camp Adventure expects all campers to demonstrate the core values of camp: fun, respect, and responsibility. Our camp counselors are experienced educators who use positive discipline approaches to promote a positive and healthy environment for all campers. Camper Behavior Code of Conduct Campers are expected to behave in a respectful manner towards all others at all times by doing the following: Speaking for yourself, not others Refraining from willfully destroying camp property Keeping hands, feet, body and other objects to yourself Cleaning up after activities Having fun! Camp Adventure Will Not Tolerate the Following Inflicting physical harm on another individual Verbal threats to cause physical harm to another individual or destroy property Use of foul language Inappropriate touching of another individual Consequences of campers doing one or more of the above offenses listed may result in the camper being sent home unable to return to camp. Attendance Every single day of Camp Adventure is packed full of fun and exciting activities that campers won t want to miss. We encourage campers to be in attendance every day so they can fully experience all of the

6 Health and Wellness In order to make Camp Adventure a quality experience for all campers and staff, we want to provide the best possible care for your child. If a child becomes ill during camp and is unable to participate in activities, we will contact the parent/ guardian. If a child becomes hurt, a certified staff member will administer first aid. If a situation requires further medical attention, a staff member will contact the parent/guardian. If your camper has any of the symptoms listed below, please refrain from sending the child to camp until the symptom discontinues for a minimum of 24 hours. This is for the wellness and safety of all our campers. Please help us maintain a healthy environment for all at Camp Adventure. Fever Signs of severe illness: uncontrolled coughing, persistent crying, difficulty breathing, wheezing, other unusual signs Diarrhea and/or vomiting Signs of communicable illness (rash, lice, etc) Special emotional/physical needs Camp Adventure is committed to inclusiveness which guarantees nondiscrimination and equal access for our camps and programs. We strive to provide the best camp experience for your child and ask that you consult with the camp director regarding any special needs of your child. We will work to provide reasonable accommodations upon request.
