1 Camping PROJECT PLANNING GUIDE OBJECTIVES OF THE 4-H CAMPING PROJECT 1. To learn about North Carolina 4-H camps. 2. To deve10p campcraft skills. 3. To learn to plan a camping trip for a group. 4. To aid in learning skills needed to be a teen leader at Junior 4-H Camp. EXTENSION RESOURCE MATERIALS 1. Picnic Meals, 4H M Campout Meals, 4H M H Hiking and Backpacking, 4H M Recreation, Leisure Education, 4H H Camp Promotional Material (available from your county Extension agent) 6. Food Conservation and Safety PPG, 4H PG Emergency First Aid, 4H M-l-lOl NOTE: This planning guide addresses equipment, safety, campcraft skills, campsite manners, planning and leadership. It also emphasizes certain skills for each age level: Level I (ages 9 to 11) Attending 4-H Camp; Level II (ages 12 to 14) 4-H Club Camping; Level III (ages 15 to 19) Leadership Role in Club Camping and as a Junior Counselor; Level IV (families) Family Camping; and Level V Career Exploration. It is recommended that the Food Conservation and Safety PPG be studied along with this project.
2 10. LEVEL 1 (9- to 11-year-olds) What equipment is needed for a one-day hike? What additional equipment is needed for an overnight trip? Is it better to buy, rent or make your own camping equipment? How to safely build, light and extinguish a campfire. What are the most common accidents that might take place during a camping trip? What poisonous plants should any camper be able to identify? What to do when you or a camper gets hurt at camp? What to do in case of fire at 4-H camp. How to use a pocket knife. Uses of rope in camping. Read various camping books and guides. Secure or make a knapsack and necessary equipment. Visit a local outdoor equipment supply store. Make a poster listing equipment and cost. List the advantages and disadvantages and discuss them with your family. Study the different ways to build, light and extinguish campfires. Build a campfire. List accidents that might happen on a camping trip and what you would do for each. Attend a 4-H First Aid Class. Make a poster that shows the local poisonous plants that a camper should be able to identify. Learn how to treat each. Find the infirmary at 4-H camp. Find out who is in charge of first aid. Talk to the 4-H camp director about what to do in case of fire. Clean and sharpen a pocket knife. Carve a simple item from wood or soap. List five uses of a pocket knife for campcraft. Visit a hardware store and look at the different types of rope. Make a display of various types of rope. Whip the end of a rope. knot, figure line hitch and Tie and eight, use a square bowline, taut clove hitch. Make a knot board with samples of 10 knots.

Attend a 4-H Fire Safety Class. (Refer to Campout Meals, 4H M-l3-36) Cook a meal outdoors using three simple methods: stick cookery, one-pot meal, cooking in foil. Make a buddy burner. LEVEL 4 (Family) What is your family's plan for any emergency that might arise on a camping trip? What are the proper methods to prepare your body for a camping experience? Participate in college and university open houses; visit appropriate academic departments while on campus. Shadow a camping professional for a day to learn what he/she does.
