2 PENDING CHAPTER DIRECTORS LARRY & DEBBE (REMEMBER MEETING WAS CHANGED TO SEPTEMBER 14 TH ) Well, our first meeting as Chapter Directors is over. If we do half as good as Don and Kathy we should be alright. We attended the District Rally in Tiffin on Aug As always we had a great turnout from Chapter B 26 members in all. Ted Strutz, Jim Culler and Larry Steinhilber competed in their first Top Gun competition in the Novice class. Jim took first in the cc class. Ted took first and Larry took third in the 1500 class. Way to go guys!! Since trikes couldn t compete, our newest member, Larry Moore, helped out with the judging while Carol Culler, Joyce Strutz. Cheryl Moore, Debbe Steinhilber and Joe Woodmansee acted as walkers delivering the score sheets to each judge. Ron Norris, Ted Strutz, and Jim Culler took first place in their classes in the bike show with Ralph Rand taking third in his class. Chapter B didn t stop there. The women s team of Debbe Steinhilber, Carol Culler, Cheryl Moore and Joyce Strutz competed in the trike pull and trike drag races with Cheryl Moore taking second place in the trike pull. Ron Norris, Charlie Barnette, Larry PENDING ASST CHAPTER DIRECTORS JOE & JACKIE WOODMANSEE (Below is a picture of the train depot station) Saturday August 16 was a beautiful day for a ride to Nelsonville, Oh. For us it would be a dual family ride. We had the pleasure of having our family follow us in the car for a family outing and we were grateful to enjoy the day with many riders from our Chapter B family. For me the ride started in Dublin, Oh. where my daughter and I headed north on 71 to meet with everyone at McDonalds. We left promptly at 9:00 am from McDonalds in two groups headed to Nelsonville. We were on some roads I had never been on but which many of you had. We arrived in Nelsonville with time to enjoy a picnic lunch before the train ride. The train ride was a throw back in time to simpler days. The trip took us to Logan then returned back through Nelsonville to stop at Robbins Crossing, a 1840s village; and then finishing back in Nelsonville. While on the train we were educated on the development on the Hocking Valley area going back 200 years. I thank Larry and Debbe for putting this ride together on a short notice. They did an excellent job. Joe & Jackie Steinhilber, Ted Strutz and Jim Culler also competed in the trike pull with Larry Steinhilber taking second place. The trikes were really tricycles!! We had a great time. We even competed in the campsite judging. We hope even more members from Chapter B will attend next year when the rally is held in Celina, Ohio on September See you Soon Larry & Debbe RIDE COORDINATORS LARRY & DEBBE (Some of the group riding back from the Sand Dunes in Michigan) Wow what a busy August a great fun run, a train ride, the district rally, and a Michigan trip! September looks to be busy, too. Here are the upcoming events: 2
3 Sept. 7 Ashland s teddy bear ride. Leave McDonalds on Stewart Rd. at 12:30 pm. After we leave the hospital, we will be going to the Kinstle farm on Eby Road for the calling hours for Karl Kinstle s brother, Tim. Sept Ride to Buckeye Time Out in Plain City. We will leave from the parking lot of the bowling alley in Lexington (across from Paul Revere s restaurant) at 10:00 a.m. Bring a sack lunch. Sept Wings over the Smokies Sept Crestline Harvest Festival Parade line up between 1-2:30 pm Parade starts at 3:30 pm A group of us just returned from western Michigan. It was a long ride over 900 miles in all but we sure had fun. We climbed two lighthouses and took an exciting ride over the sand dunes in an open-air dune buggy. A good time was had by all even Diane Guiler whose bike broke down and had to be left in Michigan. We encourage everyone to join us on the rides as you are always traveling with a bunch of great friends. (Above are the two lighthouses we toured on our Michigan Trip) Passport Program: While we are on the subject of rides, don t forget about the Passport Program. Hop on your bike and ride on over to some of the other gatherings in our area and get your passport signed. You could win a free admission to your choice of the 2009 Buckeye Rally, Cabin Fever, or the District Rally. There is a list of gathering times and places at the back of this newsletter. See you Soon, Larry and Debbe CHAPTER TREASURERS GLENN & GAIL MILLER Hi All: Ralph Rand won the chapter Membership Drawing for August. Congratulations Ralph. Dennis Long is currently soliciting donations for Rides for Kids. Anyone wanting to contribute can give their donation to Dennis at the next meeting. Or mail to: Dennis Long, AAI, 118 W. Church St., Galion, Ohio Anyone who would like to see one of the children from St. Louis, who is now 9 and was diagnosed at age 3 of cancer, can go to Glenn & Gail VIETNAM TRAVELING MEMORIAL WALL Chapter D3's CD Ken Denman The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall will be traveling from Urbana (Champaign County Community Center) to Marysville (Union County Fairgrounds) on Tuesday September 9, 2008, departing Urbana at 5:00 PM. They would like to get as many motorcycles as possible to escort the wall. It will be departing from Champaign County Community Center, 1512 S. US 68, Urbana that is at the intersection of US 68 and 55 (Commercial Street) on the south side of Urbana. When the wall moved from Kenton to Bellefontaine last year, over 1200 motorcycles escorted the wall. They would like more this time. Contact for the move is Duane Lord in Marysville at Website for the wall is Website for the Wall in Marysvillewww.geocities.com/kofc5534/wall.html. CHAPTER RIDER EDUCATORS TED & JOYCE How many times have you heard of a car-motorcycle crash and the driver of the car states he didn't see the motorcycle? It would be nice if all drivers would expect to see motorcycles at any time and search 3
4 aggressively for them. Just as we do for possible problems from drivers who are not paying attention. The majority of car-motorcycle accidents happen at intersections. Most generally, the car will turn left in front of a moving bike. If the rider is unable to avoid the accident or stop in time, the rider will probably be seriously injured. Car drivers need to be trained to be very alert at intersections. We also, must be exceptionally alert in these situations. Our level of alertness and our visibility both help to maintain our safety. Also, below is a list of the top 15 high-viz tips from a motorcycle safety center. Fluorescent/reflective vest. White or brightly colored helmet. According to a recent study in New Zealand, riders who wore a white helmet were 24% less likely to be involved in a multi-vehicle crash than those who wore a black one. Brightly colored jacket. Strategic lane positioning. Smart positioning is critical in making your presence known to other drivers. Understanding blind spots, commercial vehicles, following distance, and positioning for merge areas are the keys to proper positioning. Headlight modulation. Yes, it is legal according to Federal law which supersedes state laws. Flash your taillight. Instead of using steady braking to slow or stop, try squeezing the brake lever several times before applying in a steady fashion. Or, just install a brake light modulator. Reflective tape. Movement. A moving object is more likely to draw attention than a stationary one. Auxiliary driving lights. Hand signals. These in conjunction with regular signals will tend to draw attention. Aftermarket horn. Air horns are a good addition and have saved my hide a couple of times. Position/marker lights. Extra lighting is exceptionally helpful at night. Bike color. Obviously, a bright color will stand out more than a black or grey bike. High beam in daytime. 4 Unusual effects. Basically, make your bike uniquely yours. Ride smart...ride safe Ted & Joyce DATES TO KEEP IN MIND Halloween Party Saturday, October 25 th at Frank Snyders Home. Christmas Party Saturday, December 13 th. More information to follow.
