CHAPTER DIRECTORS AL & CATHY NIGHSWANDER April showers bring May flowers and better weather for enjoying our Gold Wings There have been a couple nice days so far in May for riding. Then it was time for Chapter B to wash and shine their Gold Wings for the Richland Mall Show to kick off Motorcycle Awareness month. It was a great way to show off the bikes, meet new friends and possible new members, and talk with shoppers about safe driving practices. We had twenty bikes/trikes in the show this year and trailers and one bunkhouse. All bikes on display were beautiful! Buck and Barb Howard won the trophy for Best of Show trike and Jerry and Rita Eldridge took home Best of Show motorcycle. Congratulations to them! Thank you for everyone who visited, supported, and helped with the show and to those friends from neighboring chapters who came to Mansfield. The next event on our calendar is the Chapter B auction. This is at our regular meeting on May 20 th. Remember that this is a time change. We will have brunch and short meeting at 11 A.M. and the auction will be at 12 P.M. What are you bringing to help the chapter? Is excitement growing in you with the approaching GWRRA Ohio Rally: Swinging into the Fifties? I cannot wait! I think planning for the rally is always on my mind. We have decorations to make, games to finalize, routes to review, and registrations to send to Rudy and Linda hopefully before the May 15 th deadline. Al and I are once again hosting a Work Day in Al s Man Cave at 7239 Hammond Rd, Tiro. We hope you can help out. Did you hear that the Light Parade is on for this year? YES! Rudy and Linda Copeland were able to work out the details with Mansfield. Let s plan on showing Mansfield and GWRRA Ohio our strength and unity in this endeavor! This is the 35 th year for the Buckeye Rally and it is going to be a great celebration. We want to remind you that the June gathering will be on June 10 so we can finalize any needs for the rally. Please consider helping with the events and set up so that things run smoothly. We need many volunteers to lead or tail the guided rides. We need help with games and decorations. And more. Also, remember that the bratwurst and sweet corn event at the Ontario Park will NOT be happening this year. Well, I need to send this to Carol; I am late in getting it written. See you for the auction!! 2
ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTORS MIKE & CHERYL FINLEY Still waiting on spring, aren't we all! The older I get the more I realize that I'm getting older, so I decided to start looking into maybe buying a Trike. About a year or two ago I had problems with my knees, and I know that some of you out there know exactly what I'm talking about. Two wheels give you much more freedom, the feel of leaning into curves, a little scrape of the floorboards, the squeeze of the person behind you or the smack on the back of the helmet, we all have done it. The older I get, however, means I need to start thinking more about the person behind me and not so much about me. It's not that I need trike right away; but I am starting to look. A successful mall show is behind us, and next comes the Chapter B Auction and Meeting then the Buckeye Rally. Remember, bring those items to be auction off since this is one of the main fund raisers for our Chapter. The turnout at Al & Kathy's workshop, for the Buckeye Rally, was great last time, but was really down this time; and we still have a lot to do. Still need volunteers for preparing as well participation in games and rides. Let s all get together and make this year s rally bigger and better than last years. Having joined G.W.R.R.A and listening to other older members tell how the Rally's used be, it's hard to believe that we have gone from a few thousand to a few hundred people. To all the members of Chapter "B" my wife and I would like to thank all you for allowing us to join the chapter and making us feel welcome. I would also like to extend this thank you to all chapters and members of G.W.R.R.A in Ohio as well as surrounding states that we have had the privilege of meeting. Once again thank all of you. Resurrected Rabbit... 3 Mike & Cheryl A man was driving along the highway, and saw a rabbit hopping across the middle of the road. He swerved to avoid hitting the rabbit, but unfortunately the rabbit jumped in front of the car and was hit. The driver, being a sensitive man as well as an animal lover, pulled over to the side of the road, and got out to see what had become of the rabbit. Much to his dismay, the rabbit was dead. The driver felt so awful, he began to cry. A woman driving down the highway saw the man crying on the side of the road and pulled over. She stepped out of her car and asked the man what was wrong." I feel terrible," he explained, "I accidently hit this rabbit and killed it." The woman told the man not to worry. She knew what to do. She went to her car trunk, and pulled out a spray can. She walked over to the limp, dead rabbit, and sprayed the contents of the can onto the rabbit. Miraculously the rabbit came to life, jumped up, waved it s paw at the two humans and hopped down the road. 50 meters away the rabbit stopped, turned around, waved and hopped down the road, another 50 meters, turned, waved and hopped another 50 meters. The man was
astonished. He couldn t figure out what substance could be in the woman s spray can!!he ran over to the woman and demanded, "What is in your spray can? What did you spray on that rabbit?"the woman turned the can around so that the man could read the label. It said: "Hair spray. Restores life to dead hair. Adds permanent wave." ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTORS JIM & CAROL CULLER MEETING AND AUCTION,SUNDAY, MAY 20 TH, 2018 BRUNCH 11 AM.AUCTION 12 NOON The riding season should be here by now; at least it has been for the past two days. It seems like it was a long.long winter. If you haven t already, when you do get the bikes on the road, watch out for hazards. Especially the pot holes this year!! Some of them are big enough to cause our bikes to crash. Be extra careful if you re riding after dark or in the Richland Mall Parking lot. We are certainly hoping for a great crowd for our auction. Remember, this is Chapter B s main fundraiser for our Chapter. Bring a lot of treasures that you would be proud to sell or buy and, of course, those baked goods. Oh, don t forget to bring a good buying frame of mind. ASS T RIDE COORDINATORS TED & JOYCE STRUTZ Here are the Advance Rider Course enrollment numbers. Let us not let any seat go unused; we can have up to 12 bikes/trikes in each class. Registration form for those who would like to attend will be at the meeting. These classes are open the public, they only need to adhere to the same rules that GWRRA members follow. Call Bill Roush DISTRICT EDUCATOR OHIO - GWRRA Robert G & Angela Williams With the new Officer Changes in GWRRA come refinements in how we do training. I would like to take a moment to discuss some new policies that have been handed down over the past several months. The Road Captain course has had one of the changes. The Road Captain has two parts, the classroom and the road. In Ohio as well as other Districts the course may have been done all in one day or due to various reasons it may have been broken apart and separated by days or weeks. But in no case was the course completion card given until both components were completed. The changes come in the amount of time that can elapse between the classroom and road. The refinement is more in line with how we teach Rider Course Classes. As I understand it the changes will be included in the new GWRRA Rider Course Instructor Guide that will soon be distributed. If you have not seen it, Tim Grimes has an article in May Wing World discussing this topic see page 64. In addition to making these requirements clearer, what about other on-bike activities such as Amazing Team or Top Gun. They too are being tied back to what we do with Rider 5
Courses. If a motor vehicle cannot participate in a GWRRA Rider Course Class, then it can t complete in AT or Top Gun or any other GWRRA Skills Completion, this excludes on-bike games that are part of many District Rallies. Still we must be careful to practice safety for those who participate in on-bike games. In short these refinements are making our policies & practices more consistent across GWRRA. If you have any questions about these refinement s please call or see me. Susan and Richard Hello Folks. \2018 COUPLE OF THE YEAR DON SCHROEDER & DEB PARKS Well, we are back from Arizona, kind of wishing maybe we had stayed out there a little longer??? We had a great time out there in Mesa, will be spending more winter time out there as I have purchased a park model home there in a resort in Mesa. We arrived back in Ohio on April 4 th to be greeted with blowing snow, wind and cold. I think most of the snowbirds have made it back from Arizona. Bonnie made it back there last week; she was the last to return I think. Was great seeing all of you at the monthly meeting. We missed you all while out west. Deb and I were able to spend some time at Al s man cave getting posters painted for the upcoming Buckeye Rally at the Richland County fairgrounds. There were 10 to 12 folks that were able to join us at the last meeting. Cathy had fixed some pretty tasty snacks to share as well as everyone brought something to snack on too. The homemade cookies were delicious. However, the 2 nd meeting was a little lax in attendance. Remember, we do need all the help we can get to make the Buckeye a Success Chapter B can be proud of. 7
We appreciated all those that spent the time and effort to show off their machines at the Chapter B s Richland Mall Show. Don t forget to bring some goods to sell at the auction coming up on May 20 th. Let s make this one of our BEST yet auctions. See you all soon. This Chapter is like a big family and we re blessed to be part of it. Live Life, Stay safe Deb and Don NEWSLETTER EDITORS JIM AND CAROL CULLER Hope all you mothers out there had a fantastic mother s day. It seems like time just flies past so quickly. However, we are all glad to see the warmer weather which provides for our motorcycle riding. Our next event is the Chapter B Meeting and AUCTION on May 20 th. Remember the change in time; meeting and brunch at 11 am and the auction starts at 12 noon. We hope for a fantastic turnout and event. Gather up those items that you would like to donate and bring them to the meeting. We do have the Buckeye Rally at the Richland County Fairgrounds approaching. Remember, everyone; the staff cannot do this alone. We need all the help we can get with making and preparing the decorations, manning the games, etc. Al and Cathy have been kind enough to open up their home for work sessions. When these are scheduled, please take time out from your busy schedules to go and help. We want to make sure that the Buckeye Rally hosted by our Chapter B is a really great success. And, without you this cannot be done. We understand that this takes a lot of time from everyone s schedules and we are grateful for any help we can get. SEE YOU SOON, JIM AND CAROL 8
SUNSHINE LADY BARB HOWARD Hi Folks: Hope everyone is doing well and riding again for the summer. Our prayers and thoughts are with all our members who have been ill, had surgeries and recuperating. I understand that Noreen Zehner has been sick with bronchitis and pneumonia for the last month. This is something that has been really going around this year. However, she is feeling better. Karen Bland had surgery and seems to be getting along great. Again, our prayers are with all of you at all times. See you at the May Auction and meeting. Should be a good one. CHAPTER PHOTOGRAPHERS SCOTT WIGGINS/MARY BASH Sorry no pictures this month!! Hello everybody, MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT BONNIE LANTZ I got home Sunday night, two weeks ago. It was quite a drive. Zena and I, all the way. Arizona was great, but home is home. Including all of the work that goes with a home. I had limbs and sticks to pick up before I could mow. Then I had to mow again today. It just doesn't seem fair. I was at the Mall Bike Show today. There were 20 bikes there. It was good to see my friends after being gone for four months. I send a big hello to those of you who I did not see today. I will see you at the next club meeting. I had my apple trees pruned before I left for Arizona. So if we do apple cider or apple sauce this summer, it will be much easier to get to the apples and they should be better apples. See you soon, BONNIE 9
