We are just one day out of Cranbrook having just completed the Heritage BC Caravan. What a hoot! The trip was aptly named because of the many old and historic venues we visited. It did rain a few days but the enjoyment of new and reflective places visited made every day a bright one. We crossed four mountain ranges, the Coast, Monashees, Selkirks and finally the Purcells. The drivers found the passes exciting. There was even time to relax in hot springs. We enjoyed many tours but the opinion of most was that the highlight was our train ride underground in the Sullivan Mine. The tour guide, Bill Roberts a 36 year senior hard rock miner, gave us a working demo of drilling, blasting and loading the muck ; it was all hands on and for real. I will not easily forget the noise and ambience. I could fill this newsletter with the many events that took place but will not bore you instead relate a funny. We had a bad day in Rock Creek due to mosquitoes and you have to picture 16 people trying to jam in one 10x10 mosquito tent for Happy Hour! It took Caravanning with Friends to an all new high. On to the Region 10 rally near Astoria; it appears our Unit will be well represented. How about a Unit luncheon while we are all there? Please me with your thoughts. Happy Caravanning or dddmc@shaw.ca Doug PAGE 1
2 THE COMMUNITY CORNER Please keep Shannon Leslie in your thoughts and prayers as she fights a serious health issue. We are thinking of you, Shannon, keep the faith. She was most appreciative of the generosity of our club SO we ask you to continue this generosity by collecting and donating any aluminum pull tabs to us as they do go to a most worthy cause. Thank you so much. Alex & Arlene Matches HAPPY CANADA DAY EVERYONE PAGE 2

5 Heritage Caravan Report By Marilyn Van Iderstine The Caravan left the lower mainland on June 5th for a fun-filled two and one half weeks. Some of the highlights included a train ride and tour inside part of the old Sullivan mine in Kimberley, a day at Fort Steele and the Summer Solstice party. Another highlight was time to browse the eclectic shops of the Artisans at Crawford Bay. One couldn t help but marvel at the natural beauty of our province from the valleys, rivers, lakes and farmlands to the majesty of the rocky mountains. Activities included canoeing (ask Paul and Charli Westerfield about the adrenalin rush of canoeing the Columbia River! ), golfing, biking and hiking. Father s Day dinner was served by waitresses in original, handmade aprons. The final banquet included the traditional caravan awards by Marilyn and Debra. 1. The Aqua Paddler Award Paul and Charli Westerfield 2. The Worry Wart Award Barry Hook 3. The Oscar Award Marilyn Hook aka Audrey Hepburn 4. The Best Margarita Award Charlie Wieder 5. 9 Join the Silver Trailer Event in Southern Oregon in September The program has been announced for Alumafandango the Airstream event held at Seven Feathers RV Resort in southern Oregon. Alumafandango 2013 was a hit, and sponsors George M Sutton RV and R&B events are again bringing Alumafandango to the top-rated Seven Feathers Resort in Canyonville, September 2 7, The Alumafandango program is packed with fun and informative activities and top-notch entertainment. The offsite excursions and tours new to the program this year include a jetboat adventure on the Rogue River, a tour of historic covered bridges, and an extended scenic bike ride led by an Oregon cycle sport promoter. All Aluma-events offer informative Airstream seminars and something for everyone, from trailering newbies to long-time Airstreamers. Alumafandango presentations will include a session on vintage valuations, hitching and towing techniques, tips for tiny trailers, and special seminars for women who want to develop their tow-alone skills. Sponsor George M. Sutton RV will present tech talks and seminars on Airstream maintenance, batteries, solar systems, and buying, financing and trading in your Airstream. In support of the Wally Byam Caravan Club there will be a special presentation about club growth, member-focused Units, and ways to become more involved with the WBCCI. In addition, there will be wine tasting, local cultural activities, open grills, happy hours (with prizes) and opportunities to visit with Airstream friends (and make new ones, too) around the campfire. Alumafandango combines the camaraderie of a rally, the educational benefit of a seminar, and the entertainment of a festival. The event site in Canyonville surrounded by pine trees and green hills is only 100 miles from the coast, 115 miles from Crater Lake, and 200 miles from Portland. The landscaped campsites at Seven Feathers include full resort amenities: heated indoor swimming pool, Nevada-style casino, the River Rock spa, and more. All brands of RVs are welcome and anyone who loves aluminum trailers, vintage trailers, or just RV travel is invited to join the fun. Alumafandango is a great way to get to know our aluma-community, and George M Sutton RV will tantalize the white-boxers with an indoor display of shiny new Airstreams. Space is limited and the event is approaching fast! Reserve your space by visiting (or write to info@alumafandango.com, or call extension 4.) Download the preliminary Alumafandango program at PAGE 9
