JUNE CHAPTER ANNIVERSARIES Hobo Sams 44 years Oregon Single Sams 33 years River City Sams 28 years Layover Sams 11 years The Challenge of 20 AMP Camping When camping with a limited amount of AMPs you must first consider the importance of restricting the use of heat producing appliances. Heat producers include toasters, electric fry pans, electric hot water heater, space heaters, hair dryers and microwaves. Most RV s have propane options for both hot water and available furnace for heating. When electrical outages occur, it has been discovered many campers were using space heaters and hair dryers in the early morning. Sudden over use of electricity can cause the RV Park to have an outage as well as the individual RV. 100 watt Bulb 1 AMP, 40 watt Bulb.3 AMP Above information is provided only as a guide in limiting your AMP consumption. 3 GETTING TO KNOW YOU We are featuring a different Oregon Good Sam member every month in the Drifter. After you read this, try to guess who the person is. Where were you born and give a couple of sentences describing your childhood? I was born in a small seaside town in Massachusetts. My father was a drummer and I was a tap dancer. Give us a short story about your marriage? I married my Dad s nurse. What is something no one knows about you? I am a Puppeteer. What is your favorite color? Blue Where would you go if you could have your dream vacation? I am happy at home where I work with many volunteers. What are a few of the items on your bucket list? Just being able to serve God. Figured it out? Answer on last page A NOTE FROM TERRY PARMAN, SHOW DIRECTOR Our Under the Sea stage scenery is painted and our painters did a spectacular job. I want to thank all those who were so gracious to give up a Wednesday for six weeks: 79ers, - Layover Sams, - Portland Single Sams, - Bridgetown Campers A very special thank you to my husband, Larry, for making additional trips to the paint barn to make sure everything was in order. We are so proud of the work we did and do hope you all enjoy it at the Roseburg Rally. When you see one of these Chapters, thank them for their special contribution to make our Roseburg Rally (Samboree) spectacular. National Trails Day (americanhiking.org) is on the 4 th of June which means a day of free outdoor events in all 50 states. Try a new sport, like kayaking or trail running. As a 2015 Frontiers in Psychology article notes, spending time in nature is associated with better long-term health. 3

Karen s Chat Larry and I started out the year with a goal of visiting every Oregon Good Sam Chapter in our state. We started in November and December 2015, going to a lot of Thanksgiving and Christmas meetings/dinners. Out of the 42 chapters in Oregon, we have now visited with 25 of them. That means we only have 17 more to go. They are: Bay Area Renegade Sams Cascade Cruisers River City Sams Clackamas Campers Rogue River Rooster Sams Good Sam Beaver Dam #1 79ers Good Sam Klamath Kampers Southern Oregon Crimson Circle Hobo Sams Spruce Runners Jumpin Junipers The 89ers Portland Single Sams Weekend Sams Rim Rock Recs Westside Wanderers Some of these chapters we will see at the Pow Wow. Others we are already scheduled to visit during the next 4 months. If you belong to one of these remaining chapters, please call me at to schedule our visit. We want to complete this challenge. Each time we come home from one of our visits we say, Wow, that was wonderful! Chapters are not alike, each has its own personality and that s why we love em. I ve been collecting recipes from most of the visits. Another one from the RiverBenders is on a different page of this Drifter. It was delicious!! Between the yummy food and potlucks, I find I am having a harder time keeping off the weight. I want to see all of you at this year s Rally (Samboree). The work that has been put into planning, construction, sweat and tears (not tears, but loss of sleep) has been phenomenal. If you don t come it will be for naught. Then we will have to dip into our savings (not good) and we won t have the same wonderful response next time around. I will have to raise the price next year; this year we have the cheapest GSC registration fee west of the Mississippi. If we don t support our vendors (over 23) they won t be back next year. Please think long and hard on this. You know, I will even forgo the raise in the registration fee on June 1 st, just so you will come this year. Karen 4

REPORT FROM THE MAY MINI-RALLY IN RICKREALL In Oregon Good Sam, we have two voting bodies: one is the State Staff and the other is made up of our Chapter Presidents. We had a good turnout during the President s Meeting on Saturday morning and the Staff meeting on Friday. Between the two, they made some very important decisions: Staff voted to stop wearing the red cowboy hats. It was an unanimous decisian. I even heard some happy shouting when that happened. I guess they figured since that one passed, they would get a little braver and vote to let the members wear shorter black pants when the weather is hot. The vote was almost as loud as the first one. There was only one little no from our sweet Ann. Since we don t want to make her unhappy, I m sure we will only wear our shorter pants when it is extremely hot, not just partly warm. Right, eh? The Presidents voted to sell a couple of our small white cargo trailers and purchase a new larger one. Larry and I will be pulling the big one with our motorhome. Everything in the 3 white trailers will fit into the bigger one. It has been a big hassle to find 3-4 trailer drivers every time we moved from one meeting to the other. That s not the last of the big votes. The Presidents voted to end our tenure with Polk County Fairgrounds. We will now be camping on grassy fields instead of rocky acres. We will piggyback with the Westerner s Round-up in April at Wapiti RV Park for our Spring Gathering and sitting on grass at the Hood River Fairgrounds in Odell for our Fall Gathering. Hopefully we can piggyback with the Pow Wow someday in September or October. Another decision the Staff made was to have 2016 the last year for the Brag Flag program. Trying to count volunteer hours for all the activities the volunteers do at the Rally was becoming too big of a problem. So you need to get out there and play your heart out at the Rally so you can win the final Brag Flag. And last, but not least, we all grabbed black garbage bags and picker-uppers and walked all over the Polk County Fairgrounds picking up trash. Where Good Sam is, Good Things Happen!! And then we piled in front of the Kundert s rig and had our photo taken. It was a great time shared by all. Thank you everyone for being there. We love ya all. Karen 5

Where Good Sam Is, Good Things Happen We are people who do good things. One of these activities is collecting food for the local food banks. Last year we donated food for the Myrtle Creek Food Bank. It was so appreciated. This year we are going to support two food banks; one in southern Douglas County and the other in northern Douglas County. The South Douglas Food Bank, located in Riddle, serves between 300 and 350 households a month (1,000 to 1,350 individuals). Except in emergency situations, clients come only once a month and most families come six times or less a year. The only information required is name, local address and number of people in the household. This facility is shopping style. Clients fill out the necessary form each time they come and are given a color coded card which is a guide to the amount of food they are allowed to take. A volunteer meets each client with a shopping cart filled with boxes and plastic bags (unless the client brings cloth bags). They then go together through the store with the client selecting from each section. About 40 volunteers work each month to pick up donations and purchased food, stock shelves, clean the facility, repack some items, do paperwork and assist people as they shop. This facility would not be possible without the help of grants and local donations of food and money. Items they need on an ongoing basis are: Canned fruit and vegetables Soup, chili, stew, canned meats Pasta, including macaroni & cheese Pork and beans, refried beans Any canned food no home canned Baby food not outdated Margarine/butter Powdered laundry soap we repack Travel size soaps unused Toothbrushes and toothpaste Fresh produce in season Plastic bags, storage bags, twist ties Egg cartons Tuna, canned meats Cereal, crackers, flour Peanut butter Canned tomato products Juice of all kinds Dried beans Rice Toilet paper Bar soap, shampoo Coffee, tea we repack Baby diapers Pet food Let s fill the tables in the hallway of the Community Building (across from Registration). Chris Ping just called to say she will not be able to be at the Samboree due to health issues. Through the years she has been so faithful to help when people started feeling ill. With 911, her job slowly became just a blood pressure taker. Is there someone out there who knows how to test for people s blood pressure the old fashioned way? Judy Simons and Karen Wells know how to do it but they have many other jobs to keep them busy. We need a new volunteer to be in charge of the BP booth in the Vendor Fair from 9:00-10:00 am and 1:00-2:00 pm each day, Wednesday through Saturday. If you think you d like to do this, please contact Karen Wells at

Found on Internet During a recent password audit by a company, it was found an employee was using the following password: MickeyMinniePlutoHueyLouieDeweyDonaldGoofySacramento When asked why she had such a long password, she rolled her eyes and said: Hello! It has to be at least 8 characters and include at least one capital. 8 I m still looking for a videographer. Give me a call if you d like to try your hand. By the way, we have a camera available. UNDER THE SEA COLORING PAGES There is a new hot trend sweeping the country: coloring books for adults. If it s been decades since you did some coloring, you might want to try it out in Hospitality during the Rally (Samboree). Coloring can help reduce stress and calm your thoughts as you take a break from difficult tasks or wind down for bed. You could even color with your grandkids for some quiet fun when you are at home. Come to Hospitality in the Floral Building and give it a try. Here is one to practice on. All the pictures will be from our theme, Under the Sea. 8
