1 September 2002 Volume 34, Issue 9 The Indicator The Official Newsletter of the Jaguar Affiliates Group of Michigan A FEW WORDS FROM THE PREZ Here we are, one week from JAGM s 35 th annual celebration of the JAGUAR automobile. All of our plans and volunteers are in place and all we need to make our premiere event a great success is your participation! If for some reason you cannot enter a car PLEASE come on Friday night or Saturday to say Hi to old friends, meet new friends and enjoy the hospitality of the club! The fact that JCNA dues are going to increase by $3.00 per member has been covered in The Jaguar Journal and mentioned at several club meetings. The increase will, among other things, help to cover the cost of the JJ going to 40 pages starting next year. Your Board of Directors has been agonizing since April if a club dues increase was necessary or if we should attempt to absorb this increase. It was decided that since approximately 1/4 of our yearly revenues comes from advertising, Jaguar of Troy and Jaguar Cars, and is not guaranteed from year to year, a dues increase was the prudent course to follow. The Board of Directors has the power to increase dues with no vote from the membership but we decided to put our recommendation of a $5.00 a year dues increase to the members at the August meeting for their approval. After the above facts were pointed out, the recommendation was passed with little to no dissention. Over the past 18 months we have made a concerted effort to reduce the costs involved in the operation of the club and to increase revenue, with great success. These efforts will continue and have made it possible to make events like the club picnic and the coming Christmas party basically free to the members and still retain a bank balance high enough to see us through any hard times! We hope to be able to continue to offer more of these types of free events in the coming year. Suggestions on what to do and where are always welcome! If you have not visited the JCNA web site, I urge you to do so! The site covers everything going on with Jaguar, JCNA, discussion forums, member s cars, cars and parts for sale etc. There is a great article with pictures, of a car that is coming to our Concours that is owned by Glen Henson from The Jaguar Club of Central Ohio. It s amazing to see the pictures made during the restoration and to discover that his National Champion car started as two separate damaged cars that were joined together! Glen gives credit to our own Ralph Parks, who is the original owner of a unrestored Series 3 E-Type 2+2, for the information he provided him on authenticity to help make the car as correct as possible. Please don t forget our annual charity auction at the October meeting! Once again the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will be the recipient of our efforts. With your help we can equal or surpass last year s results! Old Silver Tongue Jason, our auctioneer is ready, are you? Bob Attention Concours Attendees: This year Lydia is taking a well earned rest from hosting the Hospitality Room Friday night and all day on Saturday. Club members thank her for her diligent help on prior Concours. This year, Concours chairman Greg "gently convinced" Louise Hoskins to try to follow in Lydia's footsteps. Louise is asking that anyone who wants to bring a special snack or goodie for Saturday's Hospitality Room to let her know what they may be bringing...she wants to offer a "balanced menu" of snacks. Louise can be reached at winstonsmom@juno.com, or by phone nights/weekends at

Plight of the U.S. Jaguar (4-legged) In 1975 the jaguar was listed as endangered in Mexico-but was omitted from the U.S. domestic list due to a government "oversight." In the words of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1979: "It has always been the intent of the Service that all populations of the (jaguar) deserve to be listed as endangered, whether they occur in the United States or in foreign countries. Therefore, the Service intends to take action as quickly as possible to correct the oversight that excludes them from the current list". But not until 17 years later, after a long and bitter court battle, did the jaguar receive federal protection in the U.S.! By then, there was little hope for the American jaguar. There have been only a few sightings of jaguars in recent years - one a few months ago in Arizona. Before that, the last confirmed sighting was in 1996! The one chance for the recovery of these creatures in the U.S. lies with the few jaguars that wander into our nation across the Mexican border. That's why Defenders of Wildlife is leading the effort to secure habitat and migratory corridors for the endangered jaguar along the U.S.- Mexico border. They are also helping to produce brochures and educational materials - even a television documentary - to encourage people to report possible sightings, so that we can take quick action to protect the areas these cats need to survive JAGM Board of Directors President Bob Stevenson BobandDarl@bignet.net V.P. & Concours Chairman Gregg Kalwasinski kallcomm@cac.net Treasurer John Weisgerber jweisge@wachoviasec.com Membership Carol Mattison jaggal722@aol.com Indicator Editor Bob Matejek BobMatejek@AOL.com Advertising Manager Michel Grutter Special Projects Ilene Harris LeneeIHH@AOL.com Special Projects Gary Hershoren gjhjag@aol.com Special Projects Todd Phipps laurajsell@aol.com Special Projects Chuck Mueller Mueller1@Prodigy.net Librarian John DeBano jdledeb@cs.com Corporate & Dealer Liaison Marilyn Marcrum jag1996xjs@aol.com 2

5 August Drive, Tour and Party On Sunday, the 11 th, our usual group of die hard drivers minus Gary who was in Florida, Jason and Carol who were up north and Frank who was preparing for our arrival at his house, left our meeting location almost on time. The ride out Huron River Drive, North of Ann Arbor has to be one of the prettiest roads in Michigan, but very slow going as Charlie and Ted pointed out! We continued on to Dexter and stopped at Roy Margenau s dental office, which is a beautiful old church. What a great place to practice Divine Dentistry! There s no way that I can adequately describe this building and the changes he made, but I m sure our editor included pictures in this issue that will. Roy has been collecting old gramophones since he was 14 years old and his collection is very extensive, to say the least. Roy restores these old machines himself and the woodwork is absolutely beautiful, as is the dashboard he restored for his MK9. We ll have to prevail upon him to give a wood finishing demonstration at a meeting next year. From Dexter we continued down some very nice country roads, with NO TRAFFIC, through Hell, Michigan that is, to arrive at Franks where Ilene and the Stiners met us. Franks new house is located on a very picturesque site and being a card carrying motor head he more then doubled the size of the garage before he moved in! I told Frank that no one needs a 6 car garage and maybe I d park a couple of cars there to help him fill it up but he didn t buy that! Frank was disappointed that nobody brought any tools so the 182 parts that need to be installed on his E-Type will have to wait for another day! Anytime we can take the E-Type out for a drive with friends and then sit around and talk for several hours while someone else does the cooking, is a VERY successful day! Thanks Frank! YOUR OPINION, PLEASE Trying to plan meeting and outside activities that meet with the approval of the membership is one of the more difficult tasks for your club officers! The great majority of our members live in the tri-county area and yet we see comparatively few of you at meetings or activities, and on the other hand we have people who regularly drive up from Toledo and down from West Branch for meetings! Are we doing something that appeals to these people and not others, you tell us. JAGM has had this same problem, lack of participation, for the years that we ve been in the club. Help us try to solve this mystery by taking a few minutes of your time and let us know what outside activities interest you the most and what would you like to see, hear, etc as a meeting activity. I can assure you that all suggestions will be given due consideration. I d really like to talk with each of you on the direction this club should follow especially those who have not been participating in meetings or club events. As both Darl and I are retired feel free to call us anytime between 9:00AM and 12 midnight. Thank you in advance for your input, Bob Stevenson

8 JAGUAR AFFILIATES GROUP OF MICHIGAN The Jaguar Affiliates Group of Michigan (JAGM) or (Jag of Michigan) is a non-profit organization formed in 1967 by a group of people dedicated to the preservation of the Jaguar automobile. Its purpose is the encouragement of, and promotion of sporting and social events, the exchange of information, technical and otherwise, and matters of general interest to Jaguar owners and enthusiasts. JAGM is affiliated with Jaguar Clubs of North America (JCNA) along with more than 50 other clubs. General Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month (except Jan, Sept, & Dec) 7:30 to 9:30 PM, at Rosa s Italian Chophouse, Farmington Road, (just South of 8 Mile Rd.), in Livonia. Board Meetings will be held during the hour preceding the General Meeting 6:30 to 7:30 PM. (Probably while eating dinner.) JAGM has an extensive circulating library including books and videos, offered at the general membership meetings on the even numbered months. 10 Garages Reveal Our Self-Image What does your garage say about you? A study done by Impulse Research found that 70 percent of respondents considered how organized a garage is to be a reflection of how organized the owner's mind is, and more than one out of four Americans (27 percent) would be embarrassed if someone got a peek at the inside of their garages. 12 Jaguar Affiliates Group of Michigan Bob Matejek - Indicator Editor 1900 Pine Valley Court Oakland, Mi BobMatejek@AOL.com JAGM Concours 9/7, BOTB 9/8, Apple of Your Eye 9/21&22 JAGM Concours Saturday Sept. 7 th Our 35 th annual Concours is coming up pretty quick at the Northfield Hilton in Troy. Lets kick off the weekend right with a little socializing in the Hospitality Suite, Room 128 on Friday evening. Since the cars will be ready well in advance, we can share our stories and experiences with fellow club members and with our out of town guests. Snacks and beverages will be available as well as the goodie bags. We are still in need of a few good men and women to assist on the day of the show. We don t need your help for weeks or days before the show, just for a couple of hours. Don t be bashful. Volunteer to help out for an hour or two. Have you always wanted to tell people where to go? Well, John DeBano needs a hand parking cars. Is your specialty making coffee? Louise wants to talk to you. Louise Hoskins of Chuck and Louise, [not Thelma and Louise] has volunteered to handle the hospitality room this year. She would appreciate anything home baked [store bought would work too] that the Martha Stewart's of the club would like to bring. We will again this year have an off duty police officer over night to watch the parking lot. I think it s cheap insurance for peace of mind. This year we will again be having an Italian Buffet for our Awards Banquet. The Hilton will have such things as Fresh Pasta with two choices of sauces, Chicken Parmesan, Vegetable Lasagna, Roasted Italian Sausage and for desert Tiramisu and Cannolis. Did you know that you don t have to enter a car in the show to addend the banquet? Just sign up for the banquet only and join everyone for an evening of fun and good food. You can t go wrong with an Italian Buffet. Bob Matejek will be putting on his slide show presentation of the day s activities. The whole evening is well worth it. We are usually finished by about 9:30. The registration form is included in this months Indicator. Don t delay. The weather will be great. Get the early discount and help the registration folks complete their paperwork so they can enjoy the weekend. Greg 12
