Jaguar Affiliates Group of Michigan The Indicator Volume 39 Issue 12 December 2007 Yea, yea, yea, I know it was December 1st, winter and all, but who would have thunk it would have been a controlled skid to and from the Club Christmas Party. I m sure all the attendees made it home safely. And what a beautiful setting for this party. One would have to imagine how pretty it would have been on the golf course with all the fresh snow, had there been enough light to see it. The Bay Pointe Golf Club House and dinning room was a great setting for the occasion. Mike and Barbara McMenamin did a tremendous job setting up this evening for all of us. The menu selections were delicious, desert was perfect and non-fattening. The service at Bay Point makes me want to go back for a golf outing this summer. I understand that a Jaguar outing has been tried in the past without a lot of participation, but maybe we could try it again if enough folks talk it up. Just a thought from a rambling mind As to have been expected, the gift exchange was a lot of fun. Several favorite gifs that folks liked, and were involuntarily re-gifted surprised me. Several Jaguar style blanket throws, a 2 ton jack and stands, and a book about the Jaguar Heritage made their way around to several owners through out the evenings event. Again, thank you to Mike and Barbara for your efforts and time planning this for us.

Upcoming Events... Planning is still in the works for the awards evening. As this Comes to light, I will pass the date and time in next months Indicator. 3 Thoughts of a President... Winter has arrived. I hope you and your Jaguar's are all tucked inside and keeping warm. We had a wonderful Christmas Party over the weekend. Mike and Barb McMenamin put together a great dinner at Bay Pointe Golf Club. The food had large portions and was very good. I wish we had a bit of daylight because the facilities and scenery looked very nice. The gift swap was as entertaining as usual. A few valuable gifts kept swapping around the room, and taken home by the lucky few. The election results are in. I was re-elected as President of JAGM. I'd like to thank everyone who voted, whether it was for me or not. I appreciate your support of the Board that is trying our best to give you a club to be proud of. We've had our activity for December and our next get together will be at the Awards Gathering in January. Enjoy the Holidays with your families and friends. Bob Holiday Thoughts by Wayne Schultz In the spirit of the Holidays, it is fitting to express our concerns for some of our members who are having health issues at this time. Like many who suffer from cancer, Frank Kozlowski is finding out the cure is often as difficult to deal with as the disease. The Chemo treatments really make a person weak and rundown, and takes away their spirit. That is what they need to get through to fight back with. Let s pray for Frank to keep up the fight so that he will have his strength and health back soon. Also long time member, Bob Nikolas is recovering from a serious stomach operation. Again, we wish Bob a complete and swift recovery. On page six, you will find Gary Hershoren s account of his bout with heart bypass surgery. All three men are lucky enough to have the care and support of their loving wives. Let s all keep them in our collective thoughts and prayers that they all recover and are back with us and enjoying life soon.

November Lionel Train Tour Wayne Schultz We had a great turn out of old and young kids at our Lionel Tour on Saturday. We started with a short video of Lionel Train History. Then we moved into the train layout room where a large 14 X 40 display with 30 push button stations allowed us to operate electromechanical accessories. All the kids marveled at the lights, crossing gates and some of the trains they got to operate. While many of the kids thrilled at the hands on animation (no video games) I couldn t help but notice hoe many of us old guys were excited too. Seeing these trains in action took me back to one of my happiest Christmas s of my life... over 60 years ago. Many thanks to our hosts at Lionel and the Jaguar club members and kids who attended Saturday. Ed. Note: Wayne of course is writing about the Official tour on Saturday, November 17. I however forgot that my calendar was still on daylight savings time when we scheduled the tour and my wife and I with 3 friends showed up at Lionel a week later, November 24. I have set a new personal record of being a week late for an event. Not just a few minutes ///////////////////////////////////////////\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Just before the funeral services, the undertaker came up to the very elderly widow and asked, "How old was your husband?" "98," she replied. "Two years older than me." "So you're 96," the undertaker commented. She responded, "Hardly worth going home, isn t it?

What Jaguar Means to Me. I don't know how many other members have had a passion for Jaguars since childhood. As a youngster, I built every model I could find in the stores. My excitement for the styling and beauty of this car manufacturer boiled over when I was able to find one in 1/24 th scale to race on my Stromberg slot racing track. That car had everything. It was an XKE, cherry red, super lightweight magnesium frame, drop arm for the brushes so it could do wheelies, (the only XKE to do that feat I think) and super soft slicks on the back for high speed cornering traction. The ultimate slot car! Besides having my own track set up in my parents basement ( I was only 12) there was a place at 12 Mile Rd and Ryan that had a huge track that all the kids raced theirs at for a few bucks an hour. There were a lot of muscle cars and sports cars, but I had the only Jaguar. I was proud of that beauty. But that was the start of my passion for the tradition and love of that brand. Today, I have a model of that XKE in my office on display. Maybe someday I will own the real thing. I guess that's why I had to have an XK8 when I could afford one. It has most of the styling cues of the XKE, just a little larger. Plus I can drive it every day and no worry about parts and wear. I have several books about Jaguar, tracing it's history from the Sparrow side car on through current production models. However I am not as knowledgeable as most of you on the whole heritage of each model. In the future issues, perhaps other members can send in their memories of what made them become involved with this car, what got them inspired to buy their first one. Like a discussion about your first kiss, I am certain each member has a spirited and thoughtful memory about their affair with a Jaguar. Please, send them in and each month we can explore the gravity that drew each of us into this passion. I think it could be fun.

My Own Version of Shock and Awe. By Gary Hershoren Friday, Nov. 30. shall not quite go down "infamy's. but somewhere close to it in my regard. Nothing unusual for the day except a 10 AM appointment with Doctor A. Lobo. Something, however wasn't right about this day and I did have some sense of it when after entering the doctors examining room, his nurse asked me about the whereabouts of my lab test which I always have done the week before my appointment. This time I had not done it (or even thought about it) and I was a bit thrown off for the rest of my time with her. Dr. Lobo shortly appeared and he, too, seemed a bit put off that I had done the typical lest test. But, I had just seen him most recently for a Bronchitis type cough that comes to me near the end of September and usually last through May. It has existed since about 2 years ago I had with Bronchitis, while in Colorado. After the usual respiratory review and other 'light' questions, and as I readied to leave I mentioned that I did have something to mention, that I had been experiencing a slight fullness/discomfort in my chest and perhaps; a slight bit of feeling my upper arms as well, all while out walking/exercising. I must have looked a him and he at me and I think some verbiage passed between us about my not wanting to tell him this info and he not wanting to hear it. But he smoothly reached for his note pad and wrote a script for the nuclear stress test, which I was to immediately go and have done. All arrangements would be made by the time I got there, as well they were. About this time the term of "Shock and Awe" began to define my day. Immediately after the test I was sent to Dr. Lobo's office and be readied for surgery. At this very stage of events, things get very muddled for me and, I talk with Ilene. It is her understanding and what was to follow was an angioplasty, and on Thursday the following day, the double by-pass I am doubtful on the Angioplasty. So, here I'll now stop and try to clarify before going further---and also to address to everyone this 'explanatory' note for not being in contact with so many of you and on such an immediate notice. I can't exactly say when I'll back, hopefully with a lot more clarity and typing skills. This little note has taken me about 3 hours to put together. Work that one out for me, please. Oh yes, as of 7 PM today I am now home, search for where I have journeyed over the missing days. I don't have to begin to mention how disoriented things are but please bear with me while I attempt the sorting. And...and obvious thanks to so many who actually wonder, "what ever happened to old what s-his-name?????????" and meant it! Gary, we all wish you a speedy and through recovery and look forward to seeing you soon. It sounds like you were lucky to catch this condition before it did permanate damage. And it shows the importance of routine exams. We tend to take better care of our cars than we do ourselves. Page 6

This is Your Club I keep telling y all that this is YOUR club and newsletter. My favorite job writing the Indicator and being in this club, is the folks I get to meet. Our members are some of the most interesting people, and so with that said, for those who don t know them yet, meet Jimmy and Catherine Kogut. They joined the club in 1971 shortly after acquiring their first Jaguar, a 1969 E-Type. They have also bought a 1966 E-Type since then. Jimmy retired from Ford Motor Company 18 months ago from their purchasing department. His passion for Jaguar began at the age of 14. He saw one in front of his parents car on the road one day, and admired the lines and beauty of the car. However he had issues with the exhaust system mounting and said that when he bought one of those cars, he was going to improve the hangar brackets so it didn t shake so much.. So his fate was set that he would own one some day. We all fancy ourselves as engineers of sort I guess. Jimmy did too as he hold 2 patents for Equalize-Air for home furnace technology. Some of his most memorable club experiences include on August 8,1974 membership meeting at the Botsford Inn, sitting in the bar when President Nixon resigned from office on TV. His favorite Concours was at the Dearborn Inn on the grass. He says that should be a consideration, all Concours should be held on grass. His favorite club outing was to Lemington, Ontario, The Tomato Capital of the World, as it was billed. He has driven his E-Type as far away as Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he had to hot wire the voltage regulator for the drive home. His activity with the club slowed when his kids took over his life with coaching soccer and other sports. Another fun story was the (next page)

Kogut continued. First time he drove his car home, he misjudged how long the bonnet was and drove it into the back wall of his garage. I don know if I would have admitted that one. Of all the things he enjoyed most of the club meetings were the ones where tech tips, repair stories, and general information was exchanged to make owning are cars more affordable. It was a lot of fun getting to know Jimmy. He is easy to talk to and somebody you would like to put on your Christmas card list. His favorite saying and motto of life is Always have to do what you want to do. A clever piece of advice. /*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\ Still Christmas Shopping??? I know from all the phone calls that many of you are still looking for the perfect gift for your favorite newsletter editor, or your grandkids, whatever. I ran across a company that is once again selling a Jaguar slot car sets paired up with the classic Ford GT for about $90 a set. Seeing that ad brought back so many memories from my childhood. The company is Herrington.com. They have a great selection of unique gifts, with a Jaguar twist, as all the keychains and men s accessories are displayed with Jaguar keys around them. Also for the special men s gift, Jaguarmagazine.com has a beautiful Jaguar fashion watch that any lucky fella would love to wear whilst driving his machine. With a Swiss movement and leather band, this is no $30 trinket, but a must have for your collection. They also have many other Jaguar inspired gifts not seen in the local boutiques. /*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\ What a Great Year We Had It started out at the Jaguar of Novi Awards presentation and only became more exciting from there. Our year included great speakers at our meetings, including Goodyear Tires, Henry Ford Museum, Bob Stevenson, Tony Richards, Jaguar of Novi s Gary Kish, and many others. The activities committee did a great job keeping us entertained and busy. (continued on next page)

There was never a shortage of things to do in Three different Museum visits. Many road tours and fun runs. The Muellers Steak Fry was a good chance to visit for an afternoon for stories and a great lunch at their home. JCNA held it s Challenge Championship in Indianapolis this year that several of our folks represented our club at. Then for all the NASCAR wanna-bees there was the Kart 2 Kart Races in Sterling Heights, where our club had some great competitions. The Jaguar Club of Holland had a contingent of 70 cars here for a coast to coast tour. Many of our club members took the time to escort them through the Henry Ford Museum and tour the Ford Rouge Plant. That day, we made many new friends from across the pond, and gave me a reason to tour Holland and Belgium. A nice group of folks who just for the love of driving their Jaguars, made a country wide event out of it. The late fall color tour arranged by Gary & Ilene was well attended, fun and informative. Lloyd Ganton was most entertaining and gracious in his time and knowledge of cars. Plus he displayed his personal Jaguar for us. I think we all need to give our Activities folks a big hand as they worked hard to give our club interesting and fun things to do. I will continue this recap of events next month. I also need to thank the folks who assisted me with pictures and articles for this newsletter. I made my job a lot easier, and the Indicator a lot less boring. It has been a pleasure to be a part of our club. al
