1 President s Message Fellow Members, The voice of the Chapter membership has been heard. We are working on organizing more rides and getting together more often to participate in some of the local motorcycle riding events. Turnout has been increasing in some of the latest rides, and I thank each of you for coming out and supporting your club. Your 2015 ID cards are in. Please see VP George Z. for issue. Ride With Pride, Bill G. Monthly Meetings: Second Wednesday of each month, 7:00 pm, at the Flagler County Emergency Operations Center, 1769 E. Moody Blvd., Bldg #3, Bunnell, FL (Next meeting March 11, 2015) Web Page: February Membership Meeting Thirty-three members were in attendance and four guests. Guest speaker Dennis Lashbrook, a deputy with the Flagler County Sheriff s Office spoke about his involvement with the Police Unity Tour. He rides his bicycle 250 miles with hundreds of others, each honoring a fallen police officer whose name will be included on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. The Chapter donated to this cause. The link to his website is below if you d like to make a personal donation. hbrook/2015-police-unity-tour-chapter-viii Old Business Discussed - The scholarship committee reported it had completed the selection process and submitted the winner s name to the high school. - Christmas party planning committee was strengthened with two additional helpers for Desmond. - LAW Ride planning is on schedule. - Membership is at 66, with new applications forthcoming. New Business Discussed - Chuck S., Road Captain advised there is an upcoming HOG Ride on 2/28/15 to benefit Camp Boggy Creek. Page 1

2 - Chuck also related he will be coming up with some additional ride opportunities to be announced soon. He also advised that a group in Grand Haven meet Sunday mornings at 10:30 am, at their main entrance to go on a short lunch ride. Any Chapter member who d like to participate is welcome. - Celico Ride is scheduled for 9/27/2015, with a rain date of 10/11/15. regular patrol, bike patrol and was assigned to a multi-jurisdictional drug task force. While there she also formed and was Officer-in-Charge of their departmental honor guard. In 2013 she got married and relocated to Palm Coast with her spouse Sharon. Welcome Aboard Denise and thanks for stepping up! Breakfast Rides Every Tuesday 12 to 15 members or more show up at Denny s Restaurant, 7 Kings Way, Palm Coast, for some breakfast, camaraderie. Road Captain Jack Pierce leads us on varying routes if your. Member Profile of the Month Our new treasurer is highlighted this month. Denise Vignati-Woodard was born in Gaithersburg, Maryland, just outside of Washington D.C. She enlisted and served in the United States Army from 1982 to 1985 at Fort Lee, VA. She entered law enforcement in 1988, as the first fulltime police officer at the Aston Township P.D. in Pennsylvania. She returned to Maryland in 1989 and was hired as a deputy with the Montgomery County Sheriff s Department, where she served until Upon departure, she took the opportunity to serve in her hometown and accepted a job with the Gaithersburg City P.D., from 1993 to 2009, where she was Page 2

3 If you know of a member in distress please send an to Chaplain Karl. Chaplain s Corner karlw@grunewald.net As many of you are aware my son (38) had a terrible accident resulting in a brain injury. JoAnn and I spent the month of January in NC with him at the hospital. Now he is home with us recuperating. Not an easy assignment. As the saying goes children are "from the womb to the tomb". We never know what is in store for us around the corner. Once again it is our faith in the Lord that has held us together and given us the strength to minister to him. So many of you and others have reached out to us with prayers and encouragement, thank you. During the Oscar Awards one actor stated call your parents, tell them you love them" so reach out with this and call your parents, call your children, tell them you love them. You never know what tomorrow will bring. I know now how devastating a head injury can be to the injured person and to the family. So with that in mind I will close with this thought, ride safe, and wear a helmet. By the way, isn t it a charter rule of the BK International? Of course it's always your decision. 4 Last Month s Rides / Events February 21, A couple dozen members and spouses gathered for a lunch ride from Palm Coast, through St John s and Putnam County, which brought them to Bull Creek Fish Camp on Dead Lake, which is on the very western edge of Flagler County. February 28, Despite cool, soggy weather, a contingent of members gathered to attend a H.O.G. sponsored event at Destination Daytona to benefit Camp Boggy Creek. The camp is dedicated to offering a fun filled retreat for seriously ill children at no cost to their family. BK FL XXII won the award for the group who brought the largest number of non-hog Chapter attendees. Nice Work!! Page 4

Dates are subject to change based on weather etc. You are encouraged to make suggestions for any rides you d like to the club to consider. Rider Safety How much do you really know about that helmet you re putting on your head each, and every time you go for a ride? What you don t know could hurt you! Motorcycle helmets (aka "skid lids" or "brain buckets") are made to do one thing: protect the brain from any kind of hematoma. A hematoma is a localized mass of blood contained within an organ, tissue, or space that has escaped from an artery or vein. Because the brain is contained in the skull, a hemorrhage can t escape which increases the pressure on the brain and can lead to death if a large enough area of tissue is affected. A fall on the head from a height of six feet can prove to be fatal without a helmet; this would result in an impact speed of 13.4 mph! May 2, Chapter Ride to Cedar Key, FL. Here are some helmet facts you should know before you go riding: Replace your helmet if it was involved in a crash; it probably absorbed some impact shock. Page 5

6 Some helmet manufacturers will inspect and, when possible, repair a damaged helmet. If you drop your helmet and think it might be damaged, take advantage of this service. It is not wise to store helmets near gasoline, cleaning fluids, exhaust fumes, or excessive heat. These factors can result in the degradation of helmet materials, and usually the damage goes unnoticed by the wearer. Read the information that accompanies the helmet so you know how to care for it. Read the instructions about painting, decorating, pinstriping, or applying decals to your helmet. Never hang your helmet on the motorcycle s mirrors, turn signals, or backrest. The inner liner can easily be damaged from such handling. Avoid carrying a spare helmet on your motorcycle, unless it s well protected or on your passenger s head. Even the bumps and jarring from normal riding can damage a spare that is improperly secured. If it is strapped near hot engine parts or exhaust pipes, the inner liner may distort or melt at the hot spot. The outer shell may not show the damage, but if you ve seen the effects of a foam drink cup placed too near excessive heat, you can understand what happens. When you take your helmet off, find a flat, secure place for it. Set it on the ground, secure it on a rack, or stow it on a shelf. On some bikes, putting it on the fuel tank may expose it to fumes. If you place it on the seat, make sure it won t fall off. Most helmet manufacturers recommend replacing your helmet every two to four years. If you notice any signs of damage before then, replace it sooner. Why replace your helmet every few years if it doesn t appear damaged? Its protective qualities may deteriorate with time and wear. The chinstrap may fray or loosen at its attaching points. The shell could be chipped or damaged. However, the best reason to replace your helmet is that protection technology keeps improving. Chances are that the helmet you buy in a couple of years will be better stronger, lighter, and more comfortable than the one you currently own. It might even cost less!
